AS WE GATHER (please read)

As part of our Holy Week worship life, we are observing in part an ancient custom of the early Christian church. The services held beginning with the evening worship on Holy (Maundy) Thursday (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday--the Triduum) were thought of as one long, continuous service. Even though people go home to rest and carry out their necessary responsibilities, they are encouraged to remember that at least in spirit, they are still “worshiping” and remembering the events of Holy Week. There is no benediction at the end of this service, which indicates the thought that the service continues for one more day. There are still congregations who have Holy Saturday Services. Good Friday is part of that sacred Triduum, the three day observance of Christ’s Passover. The name may originally have been “God’s Friday” but it is certainly also “good” because of the good gifts Christ won for us on this day. Good Friday is not observed as a funeral for Christ. It is a day for repentance over sin and restrained joy and praise for the redemption Christ accomplished for us on the cross. The music often bears a solemn character. Elaborate words of praise are omitted. This service is an adaptation of the Tenebrae Service. the hearts and minds of believers the awful consequences of sin and the magnitude of the Savior’s sacrifice. In the Chancel are 7 candles. The service begins with a silent entry and the service ends in silence and almost total darkness. As the service progresses, the candles will be extinguished one by one until at last only the central candle is lighted. The darkening of shadows around the Altar is symbolic of the shadows that darkened around our Savior as He died. The service concludes with the offering of Psalm 51. Then the last candle is removed from its position and carried out of the Sanctuary. The brief moment of darkness which follows is symbolic of the burial of our Lord. The lighted candle is then returned to a darkened Sanctuary symbolizing the RESURRECTION. Then the candle is returned to its place in anticipation of our Lord’s resurrection. The strepitus is heard, a harsh noise which indicates the closing of the tomb and acknowledges that the meaning of the Cross is fulfilled, and that in Christ, are God’s promises fulfilled.. At the completion of the service, please leave the Church in SILENCE – WITHOUT CONVERSATION or VISITING, maintaining the spirit of worship befitting this solemn evening. Then, as you return to your homes, meditate on the Sacrifice of Christ, THE LAMB OF GOD!

SILENT PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP

Loving Wisdom of the Living God, O Living Word and Power of the Father Everlasting, O Richest Blessing in our lives, grant that what You have promised, and give us, unworthy though we are, what we most earnestly desire; that Your Passion may be our deliverance, Your death our life,

Your cross our redemption, and Your wounds our healing; and that, being crucified with You, Your grace may lift us up on high to Your Father; with Whom You live and reign with the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PRE-SERVICE MUSIC

Please observe silence upon entrance into the Church. Conversation should be kept to a minimum as we prepare for worship this night.

SILENT ENTRANCE

After the Preservice Music and the chimes are played, the congregation stands as the Pastor and Acolyte silently enter the Church.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD .................................................................................. St. John 19:1-16

Jesus is sentenced to be crucified.

Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns

and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail,

King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them,

“See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus

came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the

man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify

him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he

has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave

him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have

authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have

no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered

me over to you has the greater sin.”

12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man,

you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when

Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place

called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of

the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried

out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your

King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” 16 So he delivered him over

to them to be crucified.

RESPONSORY

P God forbid that I should glory

C except in the death of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Galatians 6:14

P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, You freely forgive those who acknowledge and confess

their sins. Let us not be sentenced to the punishments which we by our sins have deserved but

rather absolve us and grant us grace always to serve You in holiness and pureness of living;

through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

C Amen. The first candle is extinguished.

HYMN - “The Lamb” ................................................................................................... [LSB #547:1-4]

Text & Tune: Gerald P. Coleman • Tune: WINTER • © 1987 and 1997 MorningStar Music Publishers. Used by permission.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ................................................................................ St. John 19:17-22

Jesus is taken away for execution.

[Jesus] went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in

Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either

side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read,

“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place

where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in

Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’

but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I

have written.”

RESPONSORY

P We worship You, O Christ, and we bless You.

C By Your cross and death You have redeemed the world.

P O God, You know we live out our days in the midst of so many and great dangers. Walk with us

along the roads of our lives that we may draw strength and support from Your abiding presence

in time and for eternity, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen. The second candle is extinguished.

HYMN - “Upon the Cross Extended” ................................................................................ [LSB #453]

5 Your soul in griefs unbounded, Your head with thorns surrounded,

You died to ransom me. The cross for me enduring, The crown for me securing, You healed my wounds and set me free.

6 Your cords of love, my Savior, Bind me to You forever, I am no longer mine. To You I gladly tender All that my life can render And all I have to You resign.

7 Your cross I place before me; Its saving pow’r restore me, Sustain me in the test. It will, when life is ending, Be guiding and attending My way to Your eternal rest.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ................................................................................ St. John 19:23-24

The soldiers cast lots for Jesus’ garments.

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts,

one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from

top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose

it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them,

and for my clothing they cast lots.”

RESPONSORY

P Humbly we adore You, O Christ, and we proclaim Your saving love.

C By Your holy cross and precious blood, You have redeemed the world.

P Almighty and everlasting God, in Your tender love towards us, You have sent Your Son, our

Savior Jesus Christ, to take upon Himself our flesh, and to suffer death upon the cross, that all

people should follow the example of His great humility. Mercifully grant that we may follow

the example of His patience even in the most trying of situations that we may be bringers of

blessing as we daily take up our crosses to follow Him; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen. The third candle is extinguished.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ................................................................................ St. John 19:25-27

Jesus, on the cross, cares for His mother.

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,

and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing

nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple,

“Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

RESPONSORY

P For our sakes Christ became obedient unto death;

C even the death of the Cross. By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Philippians 2:8-9, Romans 5:19

P Even on the cross, Lord Jesus, You kept the well-being of others on Your heart. Mercifully grant

that we may so follow Your example that, through all we do in Your name, Your people may be

aided and Your Church strengthened. With full confidence in You, our Lord, we pray.

C Amen. The fourth candle is extinguished.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ................................................................................ St. John 19:31-37

A witness to Jesus’ death.

Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the

Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken

and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of

the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was

already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear,

and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony

is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things

took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And

again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

RESPONSORY

P He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth;

C and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:7

P Almighty and everlasting God, who has willed that Your Son should bear for us the pains of the

cross that You might remove from us the power of the adversary, help us so to remember and

give thanks for our Lord’s Passion that we may obtain remission of sins and redemption from

everlasting death; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

C Amen. The sixth candle is extinguished.

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ................................................................................ St. John 19:38-42

The burial of Jesus.

After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the

Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission.

So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 40 So they

-13-

took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the

Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new

tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since

the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

RESPONSORY

P You will not abandon Me to the grave,

C nor will You let Your Holy One see decay. Psalm 16:10

P Abide with us, Lord, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. Abide with us and with

Your whole Church. Abide with us in the end of the day, in the end of our life, in the end of the

world. Abide with us with Your grace and goodness, with Your holy Word and Sacrament, with

Your strength and blessing. Abide with us when the night of affliction and temptation comes

upon us, the night of fear and despair when death shall come. Abide with us and with all the

faithful through time and eternity.

C Amen.

HYMN - “Christ the Life of All The Living” .......................................................... [LSB #420:1,5,6,7]

5 Thou hast suffered men to bruise Thee That from pain I might be free;

Falsely did Thy foes accuse Thee, Thence I gain security;

Comfortless Thy soul did languish Me to comfort in my anguish.

Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee.

6 Thou hast suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently,

Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me;

Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented.

Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee.

7 Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For Thy sorrows deep and sore,

For Thine anguish in the Garden, I will thank Thee evermore,

Thank Thee for Thy groaning, sighing, For Thy bleeding and Thy dying,

For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise Thee, Lord, on high.

PSALM 51 IS OFFERED (spoken softly)1

P Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your unfailing love; according to Your great

compassion blot out my transgressions.

C Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

P For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.

C Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are

proved right when You speak and justified when You judge.

P Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.

C Surely You desire truth in the inner parts; You teach me wisdom in the inmost place.

P Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

C Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice.

P Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.

C Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

P Do not cast me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.

C Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

P Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners will turn back to You.

C Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God Who saves me, and my tongue will sing of Your

righteousness.

P O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise.

C You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; You do not take pleasure in burnt

offerings.

P The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not

despise.

C In Your good pleasure make Zion prosper; build up the walls of Jerusalem.

1 The Gloria Patri is not used to conclude the Psalm during Holy Week,

Page 15: In The Name of Jesus...2020/04/10  · 5 Your soul in griefs unbounded, Your head with thorns surrounded, You died to ransom me. The cross for me enduring, The crown for me securing,

-15-

P Then there will be righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings to delight You;

C then bulls will be offered on Your altar.

CLOSING COLLECT

P Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, You willed that Your Son should bear for us the pains of the

cross and so remove from us the power of the adversary. Help us so to remember and give thanks

for our Lord's passion that we may receive forgiveness of sin and redemption from everlasting

death; [these words are whispered] through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns

with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

SYMBOLS OF CHRIST’S DEATH AND BURIAL

The central and only lighted candle is removed from the Chancel. Then the Nave will be in total darkness.

A chime sounds 33 times, once for each year of Jesus' earthly life.

Then the lighted candle is brought back into the Nave in anticipation of our Lord’s resurrection.

The Strepitus (harsh noise) signifies the closing of the tomb and the earthquake. It also acknowledges that the meaning of the Cross is fulfilled, so are God’s promises in the Holy Scriptures, hence the loud closing of The Book.

SILENT DISMISSAL

PLEASE do not mar the solemnity of this Good Friday Worship. Please leave the Church silently, without conversation or visiting. If you wish to stay for a moment, you may spend quiet prayer time in your place. When you are ready to leave, please do so quietly.

WE PRAY THAT YOU HAVE HAD A RICH SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE IN WORSHIP AND WE INVITE ALL GUESTS AND VISITORS TO WORSHIP WITH US AND CELEBRATE THE
