Humble Appeal to Sai Devotees

SAI AMBULANCE PROJECTA PROJECT CALLED ‘SAI AMBULANCE’ PROVIDING EMERGENCY HEALTH

SERVICES TO THE NEEDY PATIENTS IN THE RURAL ANDREMOTE REGIONS OF MAHARASHTRA

Shri Sai Baba, in His incarnation, has served, nursed and cured many sick people. The Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi has been taking all efforts to continue providing the services to the patients the way He did. Today, two hospitals, namely ‘Shri Sai Baba’ and ‘Shri Sai Nath’ at Shirdi provide medical services at reasonable rates.

In order to carry on the work of providing health care, and to expand it further, the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi, along with kind donors and devotees, has decided to start a scheme for providing emergency health care to the needy, poor and deprived patients in the rural and remote regions of Maharashtra by donating ambulances to the NGOs (Non-Government Organization) working in those regions. In order to implement this scheme, 500 ambulances are required. For this, it has been decided that 75% of the cost will be collected from philanthropic Sai devotees who are willing to contribute and the rest 25% from the NGOs.

The ambulances donated through this scheme will be termed as ‘Sai Ambulance’ all over Maharashtra, and their functioning as well as maintenance will be looked after by the social service organizations which are willing to participate in this noble scheme. Donor Sai devotees can make this donation in memory of their parents/relatives/loved ones, on their birthdays or other occasions. The name of the donor making more than 75% share of the total cost of one ambulance will be displayed on the ambulance along with the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi. Besides this, those who want to contribute voluntarily can also donate as per their will.

The Sansthan appeals the donors to make a payment by cash, cheque, demand draft, or pay online on the Shree Saibaba Sansthan’s official website (www.online.sai.org.in)

All the devotees are requested to make contribution with all the fullness of their heart to the above-mentioned scheme of ‘Sai Ambulance’.

Faith knows no bounds of caste and religion“You should take pains, but give up

worrying about the results completely. I am present, standing behind you and carrying the pot of milk (to give you the fruits). Thus I am always backing you. But, if you think that that I should exert and you should only drink the milk abundantly, I will not agree with this. On the contrary, you should be alert and perform the actions. Be active and work for it.” (Shri Sai Sat Charita, Chapter 19, Verses 158-159)

By stating this meaning in the metaphor of milking (putting efforts), and He standing with a vessel full of milk, Sai Baba wants us to understand that we need to work hard, sincerely, genuinely, putting our soul into the task and with the right intention, then naturally, we get the desired fruit of action.

“As you sow, so shall you reap.”(Shri Sai Sat Charita, Chapter 19, Verse

210)This notion of karma is what Sai Baba

would often propagate. We all experience His miracles many times and realize the truth

in what He speaks. Those who abide by the teachings of Sai and follow His path, inculcate the right conduct, Sai Baba is always with them; this is apparent in the stories and miraculous experiences that we hear from Sai devotees. Mrs. Vidyatai Chavan has one such experience.

She inculcated the values like working for the society from Rashtriya Seva Dal, an organization formed to serve the Nation. In

order to be able to serve the people most, she joined active politics. For this venture, she sought Sai Baba’s blessings from the Sai temple that belonged to Mangalatai Borkar in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Due to concrete work done in her ward, she got elected as a corporator - one who serves for the ward from which he/she is selected. At that time, in Malad, 69-70 thousand slum houses were being destroyed. The slum dwellers were now homeless and hence, very sad. Mrs. Vidyatai felt really bad about their miserable condition. Once while performing pooja at home, her inner voice said, ‘help those in need, serving them is worshipping God.’ Instantly, she started working for them. She worked diligently day and night for them and helped almost thirteen thousand people to get houses. As she helped them secure a home, she herself secured a place in their hearts.

Mrs. Vidyatai was mainly a commercial artist who had decided to serve the people. She owned a studio and was happily working. Nevertheless, the feeling that we need to pay back to our society became stronger and made her take up social work. In order to reconstruct the deteriorating social picture around her, she kept aside her interest as a commercial artist and devoted maximum time for social causes. Then she entered politics, and gradually, from being a corporator, she gradually progressed and became Member of Legislative Assembly. Her horizon of work widened. She could now work more for her people.

Despite this, she takes part in social, economic, religious and cultural events too with full zest. She firmly believes in Akkalkot’s Shri Swami Samarth, Shegaon’s Gajanan Maharaj and Shirdi’s Sai Baba. She is a staunch devotee.

According to her, these spiritual figures ignored their own lives, stayed as mendicants, but illumined the path of others. They were a living example of mendicancy, sacrificing all materialistic joys. Yet, they led to progress many lives. It is a sin to talk disrespectfully about such personalities. She stated her protest against the recent gibberish criticism on Sai Baba, which hurt the social conscience.

Discussing more on the issue, Mrs. Vidyatai said, Maharashtra has a sacred legacy

of saints like Dnyaneshwar, Eknath, Namdev, Tukaram, Ramdas, and so on. I have read and heard about these saints. As saint Tukaram says,

In them, you notice God’s presence...Those who compassionately serve the

poor struck with pestilence They are the real sages, let this be known, who regard the poor and needy as their own.

Such is the service of the saints and thus, we shouldn’t bear blasphemous things spoken against them.

Sai Baba’s service to the poor, needy and the people who were sick is well known. He Himself stayed in tattered clothes, ate whatever He got from begging, stayed in a dilapidated Masjid, lived the life of a mendicant, but never did He work for His personal gain. He did not desire for money or good living. Devotees regard Him as their Lord, not just a saint. That is why, now they have adorned Him with offerings of gold and silver. This is their faith. Faith, devotion have no religion, do they? People belonging to different religions regard Him with respect and come to pay obeisance. ‘We experience what we feel or think,’ with the right intention in mind, one gets to experience the Divine. Having experienced this, devotees have immense faith in Him and turn to Him in times of despair. He manifests Himself as Shiva for Megha, Gholapswami for Dr. Pandit, as Vitthal for some, as Ram for others. He unified all religions by stating that The Master is one. His eleven promises have helped devotees overcome the ruckus caused due to criticism. Mrs. Vidyatai sees one soul in, Sai Baba, Gajanan Maharaj and Shri Swami Samarth. Following His teachings, she continues to serve the poor and needy. Her husband, Mr. Ajit, too, is a devotee of Sai Baba. Mrs. Vidyatai reads a hymn daily from Shri Bhagvad Gita, and recites the name of God. She has sought a balance of all three paths of life - Knowledge, Action and Devotion. She has left all her worries to God, Sai Baba. “I have handed my destiny to Him,” this is her firm belief.

Whether we know Sai or not, whether we believe in Him or not, whether we are atheists or not, we may be near or far, it is only His will that He makes each His follower and makes him/her realize the connection, and then, the person becomes a staunch devotee of Sai Baba. Many devotees have experienced this earlier. One such devotee is Mr. Laurence D’souza of Om Sai Sharan Shri Laurence Baba Seva Trust.

For the last 37 years, Mr. Laurence D’souza has been organizing a pilgrimage on foot from Kajupada, Kurla, Mumbai to Shirdi and many devotees have joined him since. He began the first pilgrimage on foot in 1980. The reason behind this is astonishing and one that restores faith firmly in Sai Baba. He was a Christian by faith, and worked as driller in Hasman company. Since the household was Christian, they spoke in English. As a youth, full of zest and willing to enjoy life’s each moment, Mr. D’souza used to smoke expensive cigars. But one day, an incident occurred which changed his life totally...

The company in which he was working faced conflicts among labour unions and as a consequence, Mr. D’souza had been arrested. He had to spend some time in the lockup of Ghatkopar police station. In that lockup, at one corner, he noticed a photo of Shri Sai Baba sitting with one hand on His cheek and ear.

Till that time, he did not know anything about Shri Sai Baba. Other inmates used to worship the photo in mornings and evenings by singing paeans and used to invite Mr. D’souza to join them too. But, Mr. D’souza thought, “I do not know this saint, nor do such rituals take place in the Christian faith,” so he ignored the rituals.

Once, on returning from bath, he started smoking a cigar. At that time, there was an old man sitting near the photo of Sai Baba. Mr. D’souza noticed him. That old man called Mr. D’souza. Till then, he had finished smoking half of the cigarette. He thought that it would not be courteous to go near the person with alighted cigar in hand. Moreover, it was an expensive one. What if that person or any other inmate asks for it? Mr. Laurence D’souza also knew that many inmates had the habit of smoking. That is why, he stubbed out the cigar, left it there and went near the old person. The old person made him worship the photo. He did what was told;, yet, all his attention was on the left cigar. Somehow, he was worried and feared that other inmates may pick up the cigar. Once the pooja was performed, he immediately returned, took the cigar and continued smoking till the end. At that point, other inmate who regularly performed pooja, arrived. He wondered who had already performed the pooja. He asked Mr. D’souza about it, and he narrated about

the old man. The person asked Mr. D’souza, “Which old man? Which old inmate?” and made all inmates stand in front of him. Yet, the old inmate who had earlier told him to do the pooja was not seen. On inquiring how that old inmate looked, Mr. Laurence D’souza explained his appearance. All inmates were surprised that his description of that old inmate matched Sai Baba’s appearance when he told them that the old inmate had beard and head gear like Sai Baba. The faithful inmates knew that the Sai Baba Himself had made an appearance as an old inmate. They exclaimed that despite their daily worship, they never got such an experience or miracle, but Sai Baba had Himself come here and that Mr. D’souza was lucky! “Bow to Him, ask whatever you want and see how He will surely fulfil your wish.” At first, he did not believe this, but on others’ insistence, he prayed that he should be freed soon. “If I am freed soon, I shall visit Shirdi on foot.” In reality, he did not know where Shirdi was and how far it is from Mumbai. Nor did he believe that such a thing would happen. He thought Shirdi must be nearby. To everyone’s surprise, within the next three days, Mr. D’souza walked out free of the

lockup. Once freed, he returned home and carried

on with his previous routine. He had forgotten to keep the promise made to Sai Baba. However, Sai Baba did not forget it. He kept reminding Mr. D’souza through several dreams and asked him, “When will you come to Shirdi?” Mr. D’souza could not fathom this, and he told his father about the dream. When his father asked him, “Did you say anything like that,” he narrated the incident that had taken place in the lockup. In response, his father asked him to go to Shirdi. He had four different cars at that time. His father asked him to take Ambassador car. He insisted that he would go to Shirdi on foot, as promised. On hearing this, his father started laughing and then, he gave him an idea of the distance from Mumbai to Shirdi. Yet, staying firm on his decision, he asked his friends to come along with him. His friends were addicted to drugs and would often take opium, etc. They put the condition that only if he provided them with breakfast, meals and fulfilled their wish to intake drugs, they would come with him. Mr. D’souza agreed. Accordingly, a group of 7 people was ready to take a pilgrimage on foot. 14th January was the date decided to commence this journey. Someone told them that instead of merely going like that, it would be better to carry a photo-image of Sai Baba. Thus, Mr. D’souza got a photo framed and by carrying the photo around his neck, he started the journey on foot on 14th January, 1979 along with his 7 friends.

It is often said that “Only those people get to visit Shirdi whom Sai Baba calls. This is true to Mr. D’souza. Despite having no knowledge

about Shirdi’s location, way to go and no direction, he took the journey. He took directions from people on the way. At that time, the roads too were not developed and no facilities were available. They did not have any convenient

spots, so they would ask people of one village about the people of the next village, reach the next village and by reference, would stay for a night. They would again start for Shirdi the next morning. In this manner, they reached Shirdi on the ninth day of their journey.

Till they reached Shirdi Sai Baba’s temple, they were not aware of the fact that Sai Baba has taken Samadhi; that He was not physically present. They visited the temple shrine, and at that moment, a miracle had occurred. To everyone’s surprise, Mr. D’souza’s stammering had disappeared the moment he bowed to Sai Baba and touched His Lotus Feet. Prior to that, Mr. D’souza faced difficulty in uttering each word clearly. (At that time, it was possible to go near the Sai Baba’s statue, touch the Feet and even put a garland around the neck of the Deity.) Indeed, Sai Baba had kept His promise too, one of the eleven promises,

“Those who visit my shrine, I shall free them from all their worries.”

Mr. D’souza had experienced this literally, as he could now speak without any difficulty. He uttered in Baba’s ear a wish that Sai Baba’s name should be joined with his name, and this wish was fulfilled, as he was soon known as Laurence Baba. He also made a resolution that every year, he would carry out the pilgrimage on foot from Mumbai to Shirdi. That year, he studied the routes, and made a note of villages on the way.

On 11th January 1980, he again undertook a pilgrimage with 15 Sai devotees, and that was the first pilgrimage with Sai palanquin (palkhi). Now the number of pilgrims has reached 700-800! His intention to undertake these journeys was noble - to diverge the youngsters who turned to crime or were addicts from their bad habits and free them of their vices. For this, he too gave away his habit of smoking cigars. He used to convince his friends and acquaintances of the ill effects of smoking and other bad habits on their way to Shirdi.

He included friends who were addicted to drugs, because he was certain that with Sai Baba’s grace, they would be free from all these addictions. Sai Baba too affirmed this faith and did not let it shatter. Mr. D’souza was indeed successful in this task with 80% result.

As a consequence, he got motivated further and decided to bring the people, who had strayed to a different path of crime, back on track. With valuable guidance and assistance from the then police commissioner of Mumbai, Mr. Shrikant Bapat, he gathered criminals under a roof and helped them start small-scale businesses. He included such people in his annual pilgrimage too.

Now, Mr. D’souza became totally engrossed in serving Sai Baba. Instead of focusing on increasing the number of pilgrims in the pilgrimage, he focused on how the pilgrims remain on the right track and how they receive better guidance throughout the journey and even after that. He started guiding the youth who joined from other places too, besides his established Laruence Baba Trust. By narrating how we can overcome our problems by

instilling our faith in Sai Baba and by following the path showed by Him, he assured the devotees and emphasized how Sai Baba loved serving humanity and hence, we shall also do the same. He also convinced them to arrange more, similar kind of pilgrimages on foot.

In this manner, Mr. D’souza, who completely devoted himself in serving Sai Baba, experienced many incidents of His grace. Since 22 years, in the month of Shravan (usually July-August), he has been visiting Shirdi and along with the devotees here, he has been reading Shri Sai Sat Charita. 22 years ago, in his family, no one could speak Marathi properly; this being the case, reading and religious text was a major challenge. Once, such recitation of the text was organized at KEM in Mumbai.At that event, Mr. Shantaram Mirani, the great grandson of Sai devotee, Sri Kashiram Shimpi had come. He taught Mr. D’souza to read the Shri Sai Sat Charita in Marathi. From this event onwards, he could easily read and understand the text. Today, he can speak Marathi fluently. He knows the Sai Stavan Manjari (praise of Sai Baba) by heart. He believes, all this is a big miracle of Sai Baba.

Mr. D’souza believes and asserts that whatever he is today, it is Sai’s grace. Due to His blessings, the pilgrimage on foot every year commences and gets completed without any obstacles and I get to serve other people too.

At present, the palanquin pilgrimage has a considerable number of women devotees too. Mr. D’souza believes that due to presence of women, there has been discipline and regulation in the pilgrimage, even while talking, walking, there is an order, and this comes naturally due to participation of women. Hence, he encourages more women to participate in this pilgrimage.

Mr. Laurence D’souza and his entire family has become staunch devotees of Sai Baba. It is noticeable that in this entire journey, they do not accept a single penny from any Sai devotee.

The Centenary Festivities of Shri Sai Baba’s Samadhi will be celebrated from October 1, 2017 to October 18, 2018 on a large scale by the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi. Talking about this Sri Shinde stated that the Sansthan unceasingly continued to carry on the work of Annadan started by Shri Sai Baba. The number of devotees coming for Shri Sai Baba’s Darshan from all over the country and the world is growing day by day. The Sansthan has built a grand Prasadalaya on the 7 acres land owned by the Sansthan in the Nimgaon–Korhale jurisdiction to facilitate convenient partaking of the Prasad meal by devotees coming here. In 2018 the Samadhi of Shri Sai Baba will complete 100 years and hence October 1, 2017 to October 18, 2018 will be observed as ‘Shri Sai Baba Samadhi Shatabdi Mahotsav Varsh’. Along with various facilities lined up by the Sansthan for Sai devotees coming for the Darshan of Shri Sai Baba’s Samadhi during this period, free Prasad meal has been arranged from January 1, 2017.

Evoking very good response for this free Prasad meal scheme, Smt. temple premises will be got rid of the agents’ menace by the joint efforts of Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi and the Shirdi police station like they made the premises pick-pocketers-free.

Sri Shinde stated that 70 patients had enrolled in the free kidney stone surgery camp held at the Shri Sai Nath Hospital. 1 to 11/2 cm stone was treated of 23 patients with sound waves (Lithotripsy), 14 patients were treated with telescopic surgery (Percutaneous Nephrolithotromy) (PCNL), (URS) surgery was done on 6 patients, (RGP-DJ Stenting) both types of surgery were done on 5 patients and Cystolithophexy surgery was done on 1 patient. For this renowned uro-surgeon from Ahmedabad Dr. Ketan Shukla and his associates, his ambulance theatre van with his whole team came to Shirdi and provided free treatment and surgery.

Dr. Ram Naik, general surgeon of Shri Sai Nath Hospital and the hospital’s anaesthesists Dr. Manisha Shirsat, Dr. Mahendra Tambe, Dr. Govind Kalate, Dr. Kardil, and Dr. Survase as also surgeons who came from outside Dr. Dipak Najan and anaesthesist Dr. Pitambare offered honorarium service.

Monday, February 27, 2017 : Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi’s Managing Committee having decided to give 100 ambulances under the Sai Ambulance Scheme on behalf of the Sansthan to NGOs working in tribal, remote and backward hilly regions of Maharashtra in the first phase in April and May 2017, Dr. Suresh Haware, Chairman of the Sansthan has appealed to all NGOs working in these regions to apply to the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi with all requisite papers for the same.

At the meeting presided by Dr. Haware, Sri Chandrashekhar Kadam, Vice Chairman of the Sansthan, Trustees Sri Bhausaheb Wakchaure, Sri Sachin Tambe, Sri Pratap Bhosale and Adv. Mohan Jaykar, Sou. Yogitatai Shelke, Sansthan’s Trustee and Chairperson of Shirdi Nagar Panchayat, Sri Bajirao Shinde, Executive Officer and others were present.

Dr. Haware further stated that this application will be available on the Sansthan’s website : www.sai.org.in from March 1, 2017. Also the NGO’s turnover in the last 3 years should be minimum Rs. 5 lakhs.

All these ambulances will ply all over Maharashtra in the name of Sai Ambulance and will be managed by the respective NGO.

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 : Dr. Suresh Haware, Chairman of the Sansthan, informed that the Managing Committee of the Sansthan has decided to pay Rs. 6,05,87,000/- as grant for people’s contribution for the water supply scheme sanctioned under the Amrut Yojana supported by the Central Government to the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat on behalf of the Shree Saibaba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi.

Dr. Haware stated that the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat has mentioned in a letter to the Sansthan that Shirdi has earned the status of an international pilgrimage center due to Shri Sai Baba. Sai devotees throng to Shirdi in very large numbers daily for the Darshan of Shri Sai. 75,000 to 1 lakh Sai devotees come to Shirdi daily for Darshan and during festive occasions the number goes up to 2 lakh. There are a noticeable number of devotees from abroad too among them. Sai devotees coming to Shirdi stay at various hotels, lodges and other places. The economic burden of providing civic amenities to these Sai devotees falls upon the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat. Hence the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat asked the Sansthan to pay Rs. 9.162/- crores as grant to the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat for paying the people’s contribution for the water supply scheme sanctioned by the Central Government to the Shirdi Nagar Panchayat under the Amrut Yojana. Having deliberated on this demand and deciding to pay the required Rs. 6,05,87,000/- out of the Rs. 9.162/- crores demanded in the form of a grant from the Sansthan, every citizen of Shirdi will get 135 litres of water daily because of this scheme.
