Hodnett Claims Title For Largest Potato
William Hodnett of Fi l lmore c laims title to the largest potato grown in 1946. He Is exhibit ing a 6% pound specimen grown on h i s farm.
It is of the Empire variety, one of the blight-immune types. Mr. Hodnett points out that potatoes of this variety do not ordinarily reach th i s phenom ina! size. He credits the long growing season, heavy fertilization and lack of competing growth for th i s unusual record of both size and weight . The nearest known competition is a four pound, thirteen ounce potato of the Sequoia variety.
