Dear Fellow Parishioners 24th July 2015

this Sunday is Bible Sunday when we are invited to spend our time reverencing the library of books which go to make up the inspired Word of God. St. Augustine was so transformed by the experience that he exclaimed “You have wounded my heart with your Word”, rather like being struck by cupid’s arrow of love and never being the same again. From the earliest times until now the crest or coat of arms of our Order has Augustine’s heart resting on the pages of an open Bible with an arrow piercing it until it becomes aflame with love for the Word. For him, to fall in love with God was the greatest romance; to seek Him the greatest

adventure; and to find Him, the greatest human achievement.

In his Confessions he shares his understanding that the Bible was collated in such a way that as beginners mature, its meaning grows with them. But we are not to self-edit its contents so as to reject what we don’t like or can’t understand. In such a case it is not the Gospel we believe in, but ourselves. As a Bishop he saw that his task was more than merely explaining the Bible to his listeners. It demanded that he do with the Word of God what Christ did with the loaves of bread on the hillside – break it open, multiply it and feed the hungry.

“When I unpack the Holy Scriptures for you, it is as though I were breaking open bread for you. You, who hunger, receive it. . . . What I deal out to you is not mine. What you eat, I eat. What you live on, I live on. We have in heaven a common store-house, for from it comes the Word of God”. (Sermon 95, 1) He often invited his audience to “Gather the grains from the Lord’s threshing-floor, the words of God from the Church of God, gather them and store them away in your heart”. (Sermon 38, 2)

May we do the same.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

‘Jesus climbed the hillside and sat down with his disciples.’ John 6: 3 At school: Can I climb over problems and disappointments

knowing God is with me? At work or study: What hills or obstacles need I climb over to

spend time with God?

In my family life: Can we choose not to go out but stay at home to eat, to share, to pray?

Prayer this week? God, maker of hillsides, creator of valleys.

In the challenges of each day, you go along with us. Help us to remember this. Amen

From St. Augustine

O God, be my inheritance; I love You totally. With

all my heart, with all my mind I love

You.
