Imagine if you will, a world where Gustov Holst and Antonio CarlosJobim hang out for coffee once a week! In such a universe, thisarrangement of In The Bleak Midwinter would be a natural outcome of such a friendship!!

This arrangement begins with a rubato choral. This should be well balanced and pretty, not too loud and lacking edginess. After the ferma-ta at measure 8, the new tempo starts at measure 9. Drums play a fillinto measure 11 and the bossa nova groove takes over.

At measure 15, balance the tenor saxes and trombones, and then ballance the different lines at measure 23. Exaggerate the fp crescendoat measure 38, play the 2 beats at 39 loud and the bring it back down.

The solo section at measure 53 is open for any soloist, with solo sheetsprovided in all keys which includes a sample written solo and scalesthat can be used to encourage young players to create their own solo.Only play the last two eighth notes of measure 68 as a lead-in to theshort chorus at measure 69. Be sure there is plenty of air in the hornsto get that big sound.

Measure 82 stays big as it restates the bridge from earlier. The lastmelody is restated and leads into a short vamp with a modulation ofsorts - be sure to watch accidentals. A ritard at the end leads into ashort last note with muted trumpets over the top. A blend of mutes andcups is best as indicated, but any combination should work fine.
