The Statement of Chairman Mao Tse-tungin Support of the People of the Congo(Leopoldville) Against U.S. Aggression

- November 28, 1964-

The U.S. imperialist armed aggression againstthe Congo (Leopoldville) is a very grave matter.

The United States has all along attempted tocontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nationsforces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. Itmurdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and subverted the lawful Congolese Government. It imposed the puppet Tshombe on the Congolesepeople, and dispatched mercenary troops to suppress the Congolese national-liberation movement. And now, in collusion with Belgium and Britain,it is carrying out direct armed intervention in theCongo. In doing this, the purpose of U.S. imperialism is not only to control the Congo, but alsoonce again enmesh the whole of Africa, particularlythe newly independent African countries, in thetoils of U.S. neo-colonialism. U.S. aggression hasencountered heroic resistance from the Congolese

people and aroused the indignation of the peopleof Africa and the whole world.

U.S. imperialism is the common enemy of thepeople all over the world. It is engaged in aggression against south Viet Nam, intervening in Laos, menacing Cambodia and blustering about extending the war in Indo-China. It is trying by everymeans to strangle the Cuban revolution. It wantsto turn West Germany and Japan into two majornuclear bases of the United States. It has gangedup with Britain in creating "Malaysia" to menaceIndonesia and other countries in Southeast Asia.It is occupying south Korea and China's TaiwanProvince. It dominates all Latin America. It playsthe bully everywhere. U.S. imperialism hasstretched its hands too far. Wherever it commitsaggression it puts a new noose around its neck. Itis heavily besieged by the people of the wholeworld.

Congolese people, you are not alone in your juststruggle. All the Chinese people are with you. Allpeople throughout the world who oppose imperialism are with you. U.S. imperialism and the reactionaries of all countries are paper tigers. Thestruggle of the Chinese people has proved this. Thestruggle of the Vietnamese people is proving it.The struggle of the Congolese people will surelyprove this too. By strengthening national unity

and persevering in protracted struggle, the Congolese people will certainly be victorious, and U.S.imperialism will certainly be defeated.

People of the whole world, unite and defeat theU.S. aggressors and all their running dogs! Peopleall over the world, be courageous, dare to fight, defy difficulties and advance wave upon wave. Then the whole world will belong to the people.Monsters of all kinds shall be destroyed.

The statement of the Government of thePeople's Republic of China

on U.S.-Belgian Imperialist Armed Aggressionin the Congo (Leopoldville)

.- November 26, 1964-

On November 24, the United States Government, in league with the Belgian Government, flagrantly took large-scale military action againstthe people of the Congo (Leopoldville) and occupiedStanleyville by force. This is a grave step of openaggression against the Congo (L) carefully engineered by the U.S. and Belgian imperialists. Itis a serious provocation to the Congolese people,to the African people and to all peace-loving countries and people of the world. The Chinese Government and people express great indignation at andstrong protest against the crime of aggressioncommitted by the U.S. and Belgian imperialists andcall on the people of Africa and the whole worldto act in unison and take all possible measures tostop the armed aggression of the U.S. and Belgianimperialists against the Congo (L).

Not reconciled to the defeat of its scheme of assuming control over the Congo (L) through the U.N.forces, U.S. imperialism has all along been attempting to stage a comeback. The U.S. Government'sclaim of "exercising our clear responsibility toprotect our citizens" is nothing but a pretext forunleashing armed aggression. In point of fact, immediately after the U.N. forces left, the imperialists headed by the United States imposed theirpuppet Tshombe on the Congolese people. Duringthe past few months, U.S. imperialism tried hardto strangle the national-liberation struggle of theCongolese people through the hands of Tshombe. It juggled with the scheme of "national reconciliation" through the instrumentality of Tshombe. It recruited foreign mercenaries to carry out barbarous massacres of the Congolese people anddispatched aircraft and military personnel to conduct sanguinary suppression of the patriotic Congolese armed forces. But all these acts have encountered the stiff resistance of the Congolesepeople as well as the firm opposition of other African countries. In a great number of African countries Tshombe's name has become a synonym ofimperialist stooge. Rising from all parts of thecountry, the patriotic armed struggle of the Congolese people has rapidly developed into an irresistible torrent. Its schemes falling through, U.S.

imperialism itself had to come out into the open, thus revealing its sinister intentions. All Congolese and all Africans can now see that the U.S.imperialist villains are as wicked as the Belgianand all other European colonialists who have oppressed them for centuries, that without the support of the U.S. imperialists the European colonialists cannot survive a single day and that U.S.imperialism is the most ferocious enemy of theCongolese people as well as all other Africanpeoples.

The U.S. and Belgian imperialists imagine thattheir mere appearance on the scene would sufficeto put down the national-liberation struggle of theCongolese people. That is sheer wishful thinking. On the contrary, the consciousness of the Congolese people has risen still higher. They have evenmore clearly identified the target of their struggleand have acquired a deeper understanding of theprotractedness and tortuousness of the struggle.Stanleyville has fallen, but the patriotic armedstruggle of the Congolese people will become stillmore resolute and further develop. The Congolese people is by no means isolated in their struggle. All African people stand by them. The people of the whole world stand by them. A multitudeof experience shows that U.S. imperialism is amere paper tiger, outwardly strong but inwardly

weak. We are convinced that if only they closetheir ranks and persist in the struggle, the Congolese people, raising aloft Lumumba's banner andenjoying the support of the people of all Africaand the rest of the world, will certainly drive theimperialists headed by the United States out ofthe Congo and win the great victory of nationalliberation.

A campaign denouncing U.S. and Belgian imperialism is now sweeping over Africa and the restof the world. The Governments and people ofAlgeria, the United Arab Republic, Guinea, Mali,Ghana, the Congo (Brazzaville), the Central African Republic, Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia and manyother African countries are angrily condemningthis towering crime of the U.S. and Belgian imperialists. They pointed out that it is not only arabid provocation to the will of the people of theCongo (L), but also a monstrous affront to thedignity of all African people and that the Africanpeople must close their ranks and support the juststruggle of the Congolese people. The Chinese people fervently support the fraternal African countries in their solemn stand of unity against imperialism.

The Chinese Government and people alwayssupport the just and patriotic anti-imperialiststruggle of the Congolese people. The Chinese

The Chinese Government and people will, together with the people ofAfrica and the rest of the world, take all possiblemeasures to give firm support to the people of theCongo (L) in their national-liberation struggle!

Addresses at the Mass Rally in Pekingin Support of the Congolese (L) People

Against Ll.Sv-Belgian ImperialistArmed Aggression

- November 29, 1964-

OPENING ADDRESS BY PENG CHEN, MEMBER OF THEPOLITICAL BUREAU OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF CHINA ANDMAYOR OF PEKING

This mass rally of people of all walks of life in Pekingin support of the struggle of the people of the Congo(Leopoldville) against the armed aggression of the U.S.Belgian imperialists now begins.

U.S. imperialism together with Belgian imperialismhas brazenly launched a large-scale armed aggressionagainst the Congo (L). This is a flagrant provocation bythe U.S. and Belgian imperialists against the Congolesepeople, the people of Africa as a whole and the peoplethroughout the world. We, the people of Peking solemnly assemble here today to sternly condemn theheinous crime committed by these imperialists againstthe people of the Congo and to affirm our resolute support for the Congolese people in their just struggleagainst U.S.-led imperialist aggression and for nationalliberation.

Page 24: IN SUPPORT U.S. AGGRESSIONcontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nations forces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. It murdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and

In order to strangle the national-liberation movementof the Congolese people, U.S. imperialism has alwaysbeen intent upon stamping out the armed struggle ofthe Congolese patriotic forces. This time its open, largescale, armed attack against Stanleyville and the bloodyrepression it is carrying out there has fully exposed theaggressive nature of the Johnson Administration and theferocious face of U.S. imperialism which is bent on aggression against the Congo, suppression of the Africannational-liberation movements and disruption of thepeace of the world. Facts again prove that U.S. imperialism is the bulwark of colonialism, the most reactionary international gendarme and the common enemyof the peoples of the whole world. Only by closing theirranks to overthrow U.S. imperialism can the oppressednations and oppressed people of the world win liberation.

The just and patriotic struggle of the Congolese peopleagainst imperialism is not an isolated one. It has wonthe broad support of the people of Africa, Asia, LatinAmerica and all parts of the world. At the same time, the Congolese people's struggle renders support to thejust struggle of the oppressed nations and oppressed people of the world. The Chinese people, together with thepeople of Africa and the rest of the world, resolutelystand side by side with the Congolese people. We willtake all possible measures to support them in theirstruggle. We firmly believe that with the support ofthe people throughout the world the brave Congolesepeople and the awakened peoples of Africa will, withcertainty, overcome all difficulties in their forwardmarch, defeat and drive out of Africa all imperialistsand old and new colonialists, and achieve final victoryof their revolution.

Taking part in this rally, besidesour Party and state leaders, leaders of the people's organizations and democratic parties, and people of allwalks of life in Peking, are diplomatic envoys from thesocialist countries, from African, Asian and LatinAmerican countries and many other foreign friends. ADDRESS BY KUO MO-JO, CHAIRMAN OF THECHINA PEACE COMMITTEE

Today, on behalf of the entire Chinese people, thepeople of Peking, filled with deep indignation, aregathered here in this solemn mass rally to seriouslycondemn the heinous crime of the U.S.-Belgian imperialists in their armed aggression against the Congo(Leopoldville), their forcible occupation of Stanleyvilleand the massacre of the Congolese people, and to voiceour firm support for the patriotic, just struggle of thepeople of the Congo. First allow us to express ourhighest, fraternal regard to the Congolese people whoare bravely fighting U.S.-Belgian imperialism.

The U.S.-Belgian imperialists' bloody crime of aggression against the Congo is not only a flagrant provocationagainst the Congolese and African peoples but is alsoa flagrant provocation against all peace-loving peopleand countries of the world. A mighty wave of condemnation of U.S.-Belgian imperialism is now sweepingAfrica and other parts of the world. The governmentsand people of many African countries, Algeria, the Congo

(Brazzaville), Guinea, Mali, the United Arab Republic, the Sudan, Kenya, the Central African Republic, Tanzania, Zambia, Ghana, Somalia, Dahomey, Ethiopia andTogo, have all issued statements or given interviews, helddemonstrations and meetings, or used other forms ofprotest to express their indignation and condemnationof the grave crime committed by the U.S.-Belgianimperialists and to demonstrate their resolute supportfor the Congolese people. They regard the Congolesepeople's struggle as their own struggle and Congo'senemies as their own enemies. The Chinese peoplefirmly support this united, anti-imperialist, just actionof the African people and people throughout the world.

Today, Chairman Mao Tse-tung has issued a statementin support of the Congolese (Leopoldville) people againstU.S. aggression. The Chinese people fully uphold thesolemn stand made by Chairman Mao and his militantcall.

Facts clearly demonstrate that this open armed aggression against the Congo by the U.S.-Belgian imperialistswas carefully planned by U.S. imperialism, and nosmokescreen is able to conceal its piratical face. As iswell known, after the "United Nations Forces" werecompelled to withdraw from the Congo at the end ofJune, U.S.-led colonialists, old and new, immediatelythrust their henchman Tshombe on the Congolese people, attempting to use this traitor to his people to carry outthe trickery of "national reconciliation" for the purposeof dividing and disintegrating the Congolese PatrioticForces and strangling the national-liberation struggleof the Congolese people. However, this plot quicklyfailed: the Congolese people resolutely combated it andthe African countries exposed it. While manoeuvring for

12

Page 27: IN SUPPORT U.S. AGGRESSIONcontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nations forces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. It murdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and

"national reconciliation", U.S. imperialism hastened therigging-up of a mercenary army and dispatched paratroopers, aircraft and tanks to the Congo to carry outdirect armed intervention and turned the Congo intoanother testing ground for "special war". However, thisaggression was again met by the powerful counter-actionof the Congolese people, whose patriotic armed strugglecontinued to grow. In these circumstances U.S. imperialism embarked on the road of open, large-scale,armed aggression against the Congo, and behind thesmokescreen of "negotiations" with the representativesof the Congolese Patriotic Forces, it brazenly launcheda surprise attack on Stanleyville, thus committing acrime more base and shameless than any committed byHitler or Hideki Tojo. From this it can be seen that U.S.imperialism will go to any length to suppress theCongolese people's struggle for independence and freedom. Its hands are stained with the blood of theCongolese people, of whom it is the most ferociousenemy.

U.S. imperialism has always treated the Congo, whichis situated in the heart of Africa, as the main base forits aggression of that continent. From Leopoldville, theJohnson Administration has continually launched slandersand attacks against the Congo's neighbouring countries, engaged in subversive activities against the Congo (B)and persecuted the innocent residents of other Africancountries. The Johnson Administration has recentlyaudaciously plotted the subversion of the TanzanianGovernment, which has supported the struggle of theCongolese people. It is leaving no stone unturned in itsendeavours to push its new colonialist schemes in Africa. The African people can now see that U.S. imperialism

13

Page 28: IN SUPPORT U.S. AGGRESSIONcontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nations forces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. It murdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and

is even more cunning, more ruthless and more VICIOUS

than the old colonialism, which rode roughshod over theAfrican people for so many centuries. U.S. imperialismis the most ferocious enemy, not only of the Congolesepeople, but also of the people of the whole of Africa.

Friends and comrades, U.S. imperialism owes innumerable blood debts to the Congolese and the other Africanpeople. It has also committed countless crimes againstpeoples throughout the world. Less than a month afterJohnson was elected president, he frenziedly carried outa series of acts of aggression and intervention in Asia. TheJohnson Administration has continued to send moreforces of aggression to south Viet Nam and has againand again blatantly talked of attacking the DemocraticRepublic of Viet Nam. It continually directs the southVietnamese puppet troops to intrude into Cambodia. Itprovides cover for the Laotian Rightist troops in largescale attacks on the Middle and Lower Laos. It gangsup with British imperialism to further the scheme of"Malaysia" in opposition to the just struggle of theIndonesian people. It directs Israel to attack the borderareas of neighbouring Arab countries thus creating anew tension in western Asia. In Europe, it steps up its"multilateral nuclear force" plan, scheming to provideWest German revanchists with nuclear arms; meanwhile,in the Far East, it sent nuclear submarines into Japaneseharbours in total disregard of the strong objections ofthe Japanese people, thus posing a new threat of nuclearwar to the people of Germany, Japan, Europe, Asia andall other parts of the world. Johnson is now givingpersonal directions in the aggression against Stanleyville. All this proves that Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnsonare birds of a feather. They are all butchers of the

people of the world; they are all arch-criminals indestroying world peace. To describe the heads of U.S.imperialism as "moderates", "reasonable group", etc. isnot only a complete distortion of the facts, it is a crimeagainst the cause of peace and progress. This absolutelycannot be accepted by the revolutionary people andpeace-loving people of the world.

Comrades and friends, U.S. imperialism's armedaggression against, and bloody suppression of, theCongolese people have aroused the deepest indignationand the righteous condemnation of the African peopleand the people of the world. The African people haveraised their mighty voice: "Congo yes, Yankee no!""Africa yes, Yankee no!" The people of the world, speaking with one voice, demand that U.S. imperialismget out of the Congo, and out of Africa. The Africanpeople have come to see more clearly that should U.S.imperialism succeed in its plot in the Congo; the wholeof Africa would become another Congo. As the AlgerianPresident, Ben Bella, aptly said: "The whole Congo hastoday become a Katanga, the Katanga of Africa whichmenaces Tanzania, menaces the Brazzaville Congo, menaces Zambia, menaces Uganda, menaces Angola, menaces all legitimate regimes...." He also said: "Ifwe do nothing about it, today the Congo will fall, andtomorrow the Brazzaville Congo, the day after tomorrowBurundi and Tanzania and after that Zambia, and afterwards why not Conakry, Bamako, Cairo and why notAlgiers?" We regard President Ben Bella's words as avivid reflection of the just demand of the African people, united to oppose old and new colonialism and to assisttheir Congolese brothers. The Chinese people heartily

support the just, united, anti-imperialist stand of thefraternal African countries and people.

The Congolese people's struggle is not isolated. U.S.imperialism would be daydreaming if it thought it couldsuppress this revolutionary struggle by murder and arson. On the contrary, such actions only fan the flames oftheir anti-U.S. struggle. The Congolese people havealready suffered the bitter experience of the murder ofLumumba, the subversion of the Gizenga governmentand the destruction of the Congo's national independenceby the "United Nations Forces". Now they are experiencLng U.S. imperialism's direct aggression. The Congolesepeople have become more awakened, more resolute andmore powerful, and although their struggle may still beprotracted and tortuous and may 'meet with difficultiesand setbacks of all kinds, yet with the support of theAfrican people and people throughout the world, theunited and persistently fighting Congolese people willcertainly drive U.S. imperialism out of the Congo, andan independent and free new Congo will certainly ariseon the land of Africa.

The Chinese people resolutely support the just struggleof the Congolese people. The 650 million Chinese peoplewill always be the most faithful comrades-in-arms ofthe Congolese and African people. In its statement, strongly protesting against U.S.-Belgian imperialist armedaggression in the Congo (L), the Chinese Government haspointed out that the Chinese people will never treat withindifference the aggression committed by the U.S. andBelgian imperialists and that the Chinese Governmentand people will, together with the people of Africa andthe rest of the world, take all possible measures to supportthe people of the Congo (L) in their national-liberation

Against the Congo (Leopoldville)!

- Renmin Ribao Editorial, November 28, 1964-

The U.S. imperialists, in collusion with the Belgiancolonialists, are brandishing their butcher's knives in theheart of Africa, the Congo (Leopoldville). The imperialistbandits, the white mercenaries and the Tshombe puppettroops, having occupied Stanleyville by force, are nowengaged in a fiendish massacre there. Belgian paratroopstransported by U.S. planes have broken into Paulis, north of Stanleyville, and U.S. aircraft are strafing andbombing the left bank of the Congo River. The crimesof aggression perpetrated by the U.S. and Belgianimperialists against the Congolese people are beingcontinued and aggravated. The homeland of Lumumbais again being brutally trampled underfoot!

Lyndon Johnson, the head of U.S. imperialism, hasreadily admitted "full responsibility" for this crime ofaggression against the Congo (L). The same day thatthe aggression was launched, at a sumptuous dinner inMount Pleasant, U.S.A., the butcher Johnson with acynical smirk smugly boasted of how he had stayed upall night to personally plan and direct the mass murder.Like the tyrant Leopold II, Johnson regards the slaughterof the people of the Congo (L) as pastime and adds tohis record of "meritorious" deeds done in blood against

18

Page 33: IN SUPPORT U.S. AGGRESSIONcontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nations forces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. It murdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and

the people of the Congo (L)! Indeed, without the supportof the U.S. Government, the Belgian colonialists wouldnot have dared to embark on this bloody adventure. TheStanleyvi11e bloodbath must not be put down to theaccount of anyone else. All the "credit" goes to thebloodthirsty new U.S. President, Johnson!

It is less than a month since Johnson won thepresidential election. Both before and after assumingoffice, he had loudly proclaimed that he would pursuea foreign policy of "peace", "freedom" and "wisdom".Now, the gory facts of the Congo (L) have made it clearthat "peace" in Johnson's mouth means the peace ofserfdom founded on the suppression of the revolutionarymovements of the oppressed peoples and nations! "Freedom" on his lips means the freedom to slay in cold bloodthe peaceful inhabitants of Stanleyvi11e, Panama andIndo-China! And his "wisdom" is the wisdom of resorting sometimes to a peace hoax, sometimes to brute force, and sometimes to both in order to realize the U.S.imperialist plot of aggression.

Hardly had Johnson warmed his chair after his returnto the White House when his Administration committedone crime after another.

In November the Johnson Administration sent morethan 1,200 additional troops to south Viet Nam to bolsterits aggressive "special war" there. Time and again itsofficials have clamoured for extending the war to theDemocratic Republic of Viet Nam, while U.S. planesand warships have repeatedly invaded and harassed thenorthern part of Viet Nam.

In Laos, the Johnson Administration has organizedmore than 20 battalions of Rightist troops to launch a

19

Page 34: IN SUPPORT U.S. AGGRESSIONcontrol the Congo. It has used the United Nations forces to perpetrate every kind of villainy there. It murdered the Congolese national hero Lumumba, and

massive assault on the liberated areas under cover ofU.S. air-bombardment.

The Johnson Administration has sent aircraft to jointhe south Viet Nam puppet troops in continuously invading the territory of Cambodia and attempting to overthrow the Royal Government of Cambodia.

Completely disregarding the strong opposition andprotest of the Japanese people, the Johnson Administration has ordered the nuclear submarine Sea Dragon toenter Japanese ports.

The Johnson Administration has sent a military"defence" mission to Kuala Lumpur to further plan thegiving of great quantities of military aid to "Malaysia"to oppose the just struggle of the Indonesian people.

The Johnson Administration has brazenly plotted theoverthrow of the legal Government of Tanzania in a vainattempt to turn that country into a base for U.S. imperialist expansion and aggression in East Africa.

The Johnson Administration has carried further its"multilateral nuclear force" plan in its scheme to givenuclear weapons to the West German revanchists.

The crimes of the Johnson Administration are therefor all to see. During the presidential election campaign,Johnson declared that the United States "is history-boundto assume responsibility for the leadership of the freeworld" and that it "does not intend to give up the worldoutposts which it is defending to protect worldwidefreedom". Now he is fulfilling his promise in full bydeeds. Facts have again proved that U.S. imperialism isthe bulwark of colonialism, the most reactionary international gendarme and the common enemy of the peoplethe world over!

From U.S. imperialism's armed aggression against theCongo (L), people can see that the Johnson Administrationis even more reactionary and even more vicious than itspredecessor, the Kennedy Administration. The latterused its counter-revolutionary dual tactics to murderLumumba, overthrow the National Government of theCongo (L), and strangle its freedom and independence. However, the Kennedy Administration did not dareconduct direct and naked armed intervention against theCongo (L) . Rather, it used "United Nations Forces" toslaughter the people there. On succeeding to the presidency, however, Johnson has flagrantly taken the roadof direct and naked armed intervention against theCongo (L).

It is common knowledge that, after the withdrawal ofthe "United Nations Forces" , the Johnson Administrationstill ke pt a military advisory group composed of severalhundred U.S. officers in the Congo (L). It has proppedup Tshom be, a traitor spurned by the Congolese (L)people and a loyal henchman of imperialism, and hasequipped Tshombe's reactionary forces with Americanarms. In August, Johnson sent U.S. Under Secretary ofState Har riman to Belgium to conspire over armed intervention in the Congo (L). After that, the JohnsonAdminist rat ion openly sent U.S. paratroops, planes andtanks to the Congo (L) in direct military intervention.U.S . planes repeatedly and wantonly bombed and strafedthe Congolese (L) Patriotic Forces, while U.S. aggressivetroops have also joined in battle against them. U.S.transport planes have been busy airlifting whitemercenaries and Tshombe puppet troops to suppress theCongolese (L) people. Meanwhile, the Johnson Administration planned the so-called "national reconciliation"

movement in the Congo (L). This, in fact, is nothingmore than a contrivance to sap the fighting will of theCongolese (L) people and cover up the criminal evidenceof U.S. imperialist aggression. Johnson has now gonefurther in colluding with Belgian imperialism and hasopenly launched a surprise attack against the patrioticforces in Stanleyville. Are not these acts by the JohnsonAdministration in the Congo (L) the bloody records ofan imperialist aggressor?

The criminal U.S. and Belgian imperialist aggressionin the Congo (L) has aroused the anger of the entirecontinent of Africa and the whole world. U.S. imperialismis like a rat crossing a street, being stared and pointedat and hotly pursued by everyone. The people of Africa,in particular, will never tolerate U.S. imperialism rampaging across their awakened and militant continent, trampling on and slaughtering their brothers at will. Thepeoples of the African countries deeply understand thatthe savage aggression against the Congo (L) by U.S.imperialism is a serious step in its aggression in Africa. The frenzied attack against the Congolese (L) people byU.S. imperialism is an attack against the national-liberation movement in the whole of Africa. A mighty roaris sweeping Africa, a torrent against intervention andaggression by the U.S. and Belgian imperialists is risingacross the whole continent, from countries in the northand west to countries in the east. President Ben Bellawas right when he said that Stanleyville had fallen butAfrica still existed. The struggle of the people of theCongo (L) for national liberation has the support of theentire African continent and the people of the wholeworld. The days when the imperialists could slaughterthe oppressed nations as they pleased are gone for good.

Together with all the countries and peoples of theworld who love peace and uphold justice, the ChineseGovernment and people severely condemn the JohnsonAdministration for its brutal crimes of aggression in theCongo (L). The Government of the People's Republicof China issued a statement on November 26 to the effectthat the Chinese Government and people definitely willnot be indifferent to the aggression committed by theU.S. and Belgian imperialists, and that the ChineseGovernment and people will, together with the peoplesof Africa and the rest of the world, take all possiblemeasures to give firm support to the people of the Congo(L) in their struggle for liberation. The 650 millionChinese people will always stand on the side of theCongolese (L) people.

No matter how savage the Johnson Administrationmay be in its armed intervention, the Congolese (L)people's revolutionary struggle can never be crushed. The fla mes of the national-liberation struggle have spreadthroughout t he Congo (L). The call to arms of anawakened people has sounded on the banks of thetorrential Congo River. Now the heroic Congolese (L)people are dauntlessly resisting the U.S. and Belgianaggressors. We are convinced that final victory in thestruggle for national liberation will be theirs, and U.S.imperialism and all other aggressive forces will be drivenfrom their country lock, stock and barrel!

Editor's Note

On November 24, 1964, U.S. imperialism brazenlylaunched a most savage armed aggression against theCongo (Leopoldville) and carried out a frenzied and bloodymassacre of the Congolese people.

This piratical action of the U.S. imperialists hasaroused the extreme indignation of people throughoutthe world and the people of Africa in particular. Theyhave voiced their strong protest against U.S. imperialistarmed aggression in the Congo (L).

On November 26 the Government of the People's Republic of China issued a statement strongly protestingagainst the U.S.-Belgian imperialist armed aggression inthe Congo (L). On November 28 Chairman Mao Tsetung, the great leader of the Chinese people, issued astatement in support of the Congolese (L) people againstU.S. aggression.

Chairman Mao's statement and the statement of theChinese Government are a most powerful support tothe people of the Congo (L) and another heavy blow atU.S. imperialism and its lackeys, greatly inspiring theChinese people and people of the world in their struggleagainst U.S. imperialism.

On November 29 in the national capital of Peking700,000 people gathered in Tien An Men Square for amassive rally and demonstration. Chairman Mao Tsetung, together with Liu Shao-chi, Chou En-lai, Chu Teh,

Teng Hsiao-ping, Tung Pi-wu and other Party and stateleaders, took part in this meeting. In three days a totalof over 2,200,000 people in Peking participated in demonstrations and in five days a total of eight millionpeople throughout the country went out on the streetsto join in mass demonstrations or meetings, denouncingthe U.S . aggr essors for their bloody crime and stretchingGut ha nds of friendship to their Congolese (L) brothers.

All over the world has arisen a tremendous wave ofopposition to the U.S. imperialist aggression in the Congo (L); on all sides angry voices can be heard: "Downwith U.S. imperialism!" "Congo (L) yes, Yankee no!""Africa yes, Yankee no!"

Under the brave counter-attacks of the CongolesePatriot ic Forces and the heavy blows of the upsurge ofanti-U.S. feeling in Africa and other parts of the world, the Johnson Administration was compelled to withdrawthe Belgian paratroops from the Congo (L). This wasa setback for the U.S.-Belgian imperialist armed intervention in that country. U.S. imperialism, however, isnot reconciled to its defeat; it will not give up its attempts at suppression of the national-liberation strugglein the Congo (L) and in other parts of Africa. It is nowdirecting Tshombe's puppet troops and the white mercenaries to continue massacring the Congolese (L) people and is intensifying its plans for another armed intervention .

Each successive lesson taught in blood has made theCongolese (L) people and other African people moreclearl y recognize U.S. imperialism as a cunning and feroci ous enemy. The blood of Lumumba and that of thepatriots in Stanleyville has not been shed in vain. Thepeople of the Congo (L) and other parts of Africa have

further learned from this event that they should entertain no illusions about U.S. imperialism and that only bybuilding up unity among themselves and persisting instruggle will they win the final victory in their fight fornational liberaticn.

The Chinese people are now closely watching the development of the situation in the Congo (L). The compilation and publication of this book is an expression ofthe Chinese people's resolute support for the Congolese(L) people against U.S. aggression. The Chinese peoplefirmly believe that the Congolese (L) people will certainlysmash all the criminal designs of U.S. imperialism. Finalvictory will go to the Congolese (L) people who dare tofight.
