Building STEM-Ready Brains Children are born learning and their early interactions set the stage for later learning. By highlighting the latest research on child development and neuroscience, this keynote will explore how children learn about the world around them. See how children’s playful interactions with other people and the world are actually disguised lessons that teach children about cause and effect, geometry, flexible thinking, and even the scientific method! These experiences form the building blocks for later STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning and school success.

A Sessions 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

A1 Movement and Mindfulness: An Introduction to Yoga Calm, presented by Lyndsay Gabeau Many studies have shown that the greatest brain growth happens when the body engages in movement. In this workshop, you will learn how to teach essential life skills through movement and mindfulness. Yoga Calm, an award winning, research-supported curriculum, combines breathing techniques that reduce stress and develop attention, simple poses that develop confidence and elicit emotional sharing, social/emotional activities, story-telling and relaxation, and positive affirmations to teach the “whole child”. STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

A2 Anxiety Management with Tucker Turtle, presented by Candice Hoyt, Toolbox for Teaching Turtle is the mascot/model of the Turtle Technique - a self-management technique for dealing with anxiety and any “big feelings.” Steps include recognizing that you are overwhelmed by emotions, making a conscious effort to stop before escalating, going into a “turtle shell”, reassuring yourself you are a good problem-solver, and coming out of the shell when ready to deal with the situation. This technique is used in programs for children with severe behavior disorders as well as with children who have occasional and developmentally appropriate emotional overload. We will also specifically discuss anxiety in children from birth through preschool - what it looks like at different ages and how to help children cope. Candice Hoyt specializes in behavior support and classroom management trainings, including young children and anxiety. Handouts will be provided at the training. STARS Core Competency: Child Growth and Development

A3 Forest Kindergartens and Nature Pedagogy, presented by Erin Kenny Young children learn best through experiential hands-on discovery and when they are relaxed and having fun. The Forest Kindergarten early childhood education model is one of the best educational models for keeping kids excited about learning and for building their connection with the natural world. Besides its commitment to daily nature immersion time, the Forest Kindergarten is distinguished by its pedagogical philosophy including several key features such as emergent curriculum, interest-led flow learning and inquiry-based teaching style. No matter how much nature time you can commit to in your program, you will gain a better understanding of how to develop lesson plans from the outdoor emergent curriculum by identifying the early learning strands which evolve from this pedagogical approach and how to scaffold them into indoor activities which support that learning. STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

A4 STEM Cardboard Creations, presented by Ron Mohl With cardboard creations, we will engage in using our imagination combined with hands-on problem solving. As we twist, bend, tear, cut, and decorate cardboard we will be bringing to life real world STEM experiences to every participant whether it be child or adult. Small groups will collaborate and use their ingenuity on machinery, cause and effect experiments, and one-of-a-kind conceptions that can be shared. Cardboard creations will spark learning through play. Participants will leave with the ability to organize and cooperate as a group to plan, create, and build their project. Learn techniques they can teach children such as listening, critiquing, sharing, and planning. Discover a fun way to incorporate learning into projects with their children. STARS Core Competency: Learning Environment and Curriculum

B Sessions 1:15 p.m. - 2:45 p.m. B1 Incorporating Flannel Board Stories into your Learning Environment, presented by Meghan O’Connell, Lead ECEAP Instructor, Everett Public Schools Come and learn how easy and beneficial it is to incorporate flannel board stories and activities into your preschool classroom! In this class you will learn how flannel board stories support different learning styles, address all of the early childhood developmental domains, offer wonderful opportunities for storytelling, encourage language development, and promote early literacy. You will also learn how to make your own flannel board stories, organize them for easy classroom use, and how they can capture the attention of young children and get them involved at circle time. STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

B2 Music and Movement, presented by Diane Moats, M.Ed, MT, Music and Movement/P.E. Teacher, Anacortes School District Music and movement complement each other in early learning and school age settings. Children instinctively respond to music, dance, and rhythmic activities, but initially lack self-regulation. In this session we will examine activities and music choices which assist students with spatial awareness, self-regulation, and following directions. These are fun, interactive techniques which your students will enjoy while learning basic classroom skills. STARS Core Competency: Interaction

B3 Proven Approaches to Behavior Support and Classroom Management, presented by Candice Hoyt, Tools for Teaching This interactive training draws from the research-based models for promoting social emotional development and school readiness, from the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL). Through video examples, discussions and role-playing, you will leave this training prepared to fully support children in managing their own emotions, behavior and social conflicts. The first section of this training is a short overview on the psychology of behavior including reinforcement versus punishment. The next three sections cover specific behavior strategies you can teach directly to children to help them deal with their own “big feelings” before acting out (The Turtle Technique), see themselves as problem solvers (The Problem-Solving Steps) and take control of solving the problem without teacher assistance (The Solution Kit). Candice Hoyt has taught college psychology and early childhood education courses and currently specializes in training and coaching teachers and families to help them support children’s social emotional development. STARS Core Competency: Child Growth and Development

B4 The Culturally Responsive Curriculum: A Practical Guide for Infusing Multicultural Education Into the Curriculum and Learning Environment, presented by Sharon Knight, Adult Educator, Advocate, Consultant & Motivational Speaker, Team Neutral Zone This Culturally Responsive Curriculum (CRC) is an experiential based workshop that supports the development and implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy. Participants will have the opportunity to examine a culturally responsive curriculum model, engage in culturally responsive curriculum activities, and explore the practices of culturally responsive teaching. This workshop is specifically designed for Administrators, Coordinators, Center Owners and Center Directors who provide instruction or professional development opportunities for Early Learning Professionals. We can only teach what we know. Therefore, participants in this workshop will engage in hands-on culturally responsive activities, which support the understanding, development and implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy. STARS Core Competency: Professional Development and Leadership

ABC Sessions 10:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Note: This is a full day session. If you register to attend this session you will not register for an A, B, or C session unless it is your second choice. If you wish to receive college credit you are required to register for this session. ABC7: Diversity in Early Childhood Education Settings – Honoring Differences- Con Respecto, presented by Barbara Martinez-Griego, Skagit Valley College This course examines approaches to developing curriculum, programs and relationships with children and families that are responsive to individual, community and cultural needs. Includes examination of diversity in culture, ability, socioeconomic status, lifestyle and gender in the context of school or program settings. We will spend the day exploring ways of honoring and respecting differences in today’s society! STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning EnvironmentProcess for delivery of content; include an activity you might use that honors cultures and learning styles: A good starting place for Bilingual early childhood education is to examine the concept of culture. Every person has culture. Reflect on your early experiences and try to recall your memory. For some people this may be very difficult and extremely painful. You have the option to vary for this activity. You may instead reflect on a child you recently saw playing or interacting with other others. In either case try to recall using all of your senses and recall such details as the smells, sounds and people present. Recall your own feelings about the memory. Once your memory is clear, represent your memory using art medium such as finger paints, coloring pens, cardboard and collage, music, dance, building materials or blocks, next, identify five main elements of your memory and label them. This is a beginning example of what Freire called “naming the world” and “reading the world.”

C Sessions 3:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. C1: Math Common Core and Connection to Early Learning, presented by Julie Wagner, Assessment Specialist, OSPI This session will provide an overview of the research on the importance of early math to school success. During the session, participants will build an understanding of fundamental early numeracy concepts that will promote mathematical thinking and enthusiasm through play and classroom activities. Resources available to participants will be reviewed. STARS Core Competency: Program Planning and Development

C2: Nurturing the Math Instinct, presented by Dan Finkel, Math for Love Every child has an instinct for mathematical thinking. Patterns, numbers, and shapes fascinate children even at a very young age. In this talk, we will examine concrete ways to nurture the mathematical instinct in children. Creating the right environment can nourish the mental and emotional aspects of early mathematical life, removing stress and seeding play and delight. We can help a new generation of children start developing a healthy and positive relationship to mathematics. STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

C3 Circle Time Success, presented by Jocelyn Manzanarez Children learn best through active involvement so shouldn’t this go for adults as well? Absolutely! Jocelyn believes teachers who get up and out of their seats doing every activity during training are more likely to retain what they learn. From transition songs to weather awareness to instrument play; her multi-sensory approach to circle time using music and movement engages both teachers and kids. Whether a new teacher to early childhood or a veteran looking to “spice it up”, Jocelyn has created a circle time curriculum that will move you to the head of the class. Participants will leave with a CD of all the songs they learn during the presentation. STARS Core Competency: Curriculum and Learning Environment

C4 Services for Social-Emotional Issues – Infants & Toddlers presented by Angela Shapow, Children’s Education Rights LawyerThis workshop wil offer Q & A on legal rights and available services for infants and toddlers with social-emotional issues. Emotional/social issues can be serious impediments to learning for infants and toddlers, but many teachers, administrators and parents are not aware that these issues are considered disabilities for which special services are available. When delays or other factors limit opportunity for learning, children are legally entitled to support under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will discuss what the options are, how families and centers can access funds and therapies, and how teachers/centers can ensure they are in compliance with legal requirements. Handouts will be provided at the training. STARS Core Competency: Professional Development and Leadership

C5 STEM Cardboard Creations, presented by Ron Mohl With cardboard creations, we will engage in using our imagination combined with hands-on problem solving.
