A welcome messageWe are delighted to welcome you to Newcastle University.�The�In-Sessional�English�team�is�here�to�help�you�to�effectively�communicate�knowledge�of�your�subject�area.�We�help�you�to�bridge�the�gap�between�general�English�and�the�academic�English needed to succeed in UK university life.
Depending�on�your�score�in�the�University�English Language Assessment (UELA), you will be�able�to�attend�up�to�ten�hours�of�support�classes�each�week.�All�of�this�support�is�free�and�aims�to�help�you�achieve�your�full�academic�potential.�Make�sure�you�take�full�advantage�of�it!
We offer courses that range from lecture-style to�workshop-format;�covering�reading,�writing,�listening�and�speaking.�We�also�offer�1-to-1�writing tutorials, where you can meet a teacher for�25�minutes�to�discuss�specific�problems�that you are encountering with your written assignments.�For�further�details�about�the�specific�support�available�to�you,�please�refer� to�the�contents�list�on�the�opposite�page.

How will I get my results?• You will receive your UELA results in an email sent to your
Newcastle University email account.
•�� �The�email�will�include�your�scores,�levels�and�some�advice�as�to�which�In-Sessional�classes�are�most�suitable�for�you.
• We aim to do this within four working days of your UELA session.
• UELA results are also sent to your Academic School to help�personal�tutors�advise�you�on�whether�you�may�benefit�from�In-Sessional�classes.
How should I register for classes?The�registration�process�varies�according�to�the�sessions�that�you�would�like�to�attend.�Please�refer�to�pages�6�-�42�for�details�of�the�support�available�to�you�and�how�to�register.�Note: �All�In-Sessional�provision�is�arranged�on�a�first�come,�first�served�basis.� The�sooner�you�register,�the�more�likely�there�will�be�availability�in�the� classes�you�wish�to�join.
What is the UELA?All students at Newcastle University can access support�for�their�academic�English�through�either�the�In-Sessional English Programme or the University’s Writing Development�Centre.�The�UELA�is�an�English�language�assessment which is designed to determine which of these types�of�support�is�most�suitable�for�you.�
What do the UELA results mean?The�UELA�does�not�affect�entry�onto�your� Degree Programme.
You�will�be�given�two�scores:�one�for�listening�and�one� for writing.

< 60 1 The�language�support�provided�by�the�In-Sessional�Programme�is�suitable�for�your level of English. You are strongly advised to take classes in that skill area.
60-69 2 The�language�support�provided�by�the�In-Sessional�Programme�is�suitable�for your level of English. We still recommend�you�take�classes;�you�are�likely�to�need�some�support.
> 69 3 You don’t need to take classes. We do offer�level�3�Listening�and�Speaking�classes,�but�we�do�not�offer�writing�classes for students at this level.

Do I have to take the UELA?As stated in the University English Language Policy (http://www.ncl.ac.uk/international/courses/language/#overview),�all�non-native�speakers�of�English�who are arriving at Newcastle University must take the UELA unless they can show evidence that they meet one of the�following�criteria�for�exemption:
Criteria for exemption from the UELA:
Completion�of�an�INTO�Newcastle�University�preparatory�programme,�including�Pre-Sessional�English,�Academic�English,�International�Foundation,�International�Year�One,�or�Graduate�Diploma�within�the�last�two�years.
Taken�the�UELA�at�any�time�since�September�2017�
Achieved�one�of�the�following�results�within�the�last�two�years:
•�� �IELTS:�7.0�(or�above)�in�all�four�skills
•�� �Integrated�Skills�in�English�–�Trinity�College�London�ISE�III�or ISE IV
• Continuation of study on a Degree Programme at a Newcastle�University�campus�overseas,�such�as�NUMed� or NUIS
•�� �Cambridge�Certificate�of�Proficiency�in�English,� Grade�A�or�B
•�� �Cambridge�Advanced�Certificate,�Grade�A�
•�� �GCSE,�AS�or�A�Level�in�English�or�English�Language,�Grade�C�or�above.
Successful�completion,�within�the�last�12�months,�of�either�an�undergraduate�degree�(with�a�2:1�or�higher),�a�post�graduate�degree�or�at�least�five�years�of�secondary�/�higher�education through the medium of English in one of the countries�listed�below:

How do I exempt myself?Please�note�that�if�you�exempt�yourself�from�the�UELA,�you�will�not�be�able�to�take�any�In-Sessional�classes.
From�Wednesday�18th�September�until�12pm�noon�on�Friday�20th�September,�there�will�be�a�dedicated�exemptions�desk�on�the�ground�floor�of�the�INTO�building.�From�Monday�23rd�September�until�Friday�27th�September,�this�desk�will�be�found�next�to�Lecture�Theatre�3�in�the�Herschel�building.�You�must�bring�the�original�documents�that�support�your�exemption�request.
From�Monday�30th�September�until�Friday�18th�October,�there�will�be�a�member�of�staff�available�on�the�ground�floor�of�the�INTO�Building�between�11am�and�1pm.

What do I need to take to the UELA?• Your university smart-card as identification.

All�documents�must�be�originals.�They�will�be�taken�from�you as you enter the room and returned to you at the end of the UELA session.
When and where can I take the UELA?Please choose a time from the schedule. You must arrive 10�minutes�before�the�start�of�the�session.�Latecomers�will�not�be�admitted.�
The�duration�of�the�assessment�is�approximately�two�hours.�

What happens if I don’t take the UELA?Newcastle�University�takes�the�language�support�of� non-native�speaker�students�very�seriously.�If�you�have� not�taken�the�UELA�by�Friday�18th�October�2019�for�Semester�1�registrations�or�Friday�14th�February�2020�for�Semester�2�registrations,�you�will�be�referred�to�the�University�Student�Progress�department.�You�will�receive�daily reminder emails until you have either taken the UELA�or�obtained�an�exemption.�

INU1009 An�introduction�to�academic�seminar�speaking�skills,�which�supports�the�development�of�managing�small-group�discussions

INU8001 An introduction to the language and structure of academic dissertations in the fields of Science and Engineering.
Requirements for passing these coursesAll�In-Sessional�credit-bearing�modules�have�one�two-hour�class�per�week.� There�is�a�minimum�attendance�requirement�of�75%.�
Each�module�has�a�final�exam�and/or�piece�of�coursework.� Full�details�are�available�in�the�student�handbook�on�Blackboard�once�you�are�registered�for�a�module.
