Students from St. Jean Baptiste and Ste. Anne witnessed a violent robbery attempt and shooting. A day into their week-long humanitarian project at an orphanage in Puerto Plata burglars stormed thecompound. The compound's Canadian owner, identified as 64-year-old Les Lehmann, got into a fight with the bur-glars while trying to protect four female students and their female teacher after they were briefly held atgunpoint. All 26 members of the humanitarian school trip arrived back in Winnipeg at 5 a.m. Saturday from beingrushed home from the Dominican Republic, Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine superintendent AlainLaberge said. The group included 18 students and eight teachers and parent-chaperones from Ecole Pointe-Des Chênes in Ste. Anne and Ecolerégionale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. They had barely arrived in their dormitory on Thursday to begin aweeklong project helping an orphanage/school, when armed men brokein to rob them around 1:45 a.m. Friday. "It's a project we've been doing for years," Laberge said. "It's kind of acompound, four students per room, with a chaperone.” "The burglars went to the first room. They wanted money, cameras,"Laberge said the students were not carrying much money purposely to avoid this kind of situation. "One of the girls spoke Spanish. She said, 'We have nothing,' " Laberge said. That's when it got violent. "The owner quickly stepped in between the students and the burglars," he said. "All the students in theother rooms went into their closets, hiding." The owner was shot several times and is in critical condition. The gunmen fled, and police soon arrived.Things happened fast that night. The teachers phoned their principals, Laberge was awoken in the middleof the night, he called school board chairman, and Laberge alerted his staff to start finding a way to get thegroup home as quickly as possible. Given the time difference, it was already 4 a.m. for the students, and police were everywhere, so Labergeconcluded the dormitory was the safest place for them for the time being. They later bused to the airport inPuerto Plata and spent Friday evening at the airport in New York City. The DSFM managed to get them ona late flight with connections that arrived here at 5 a.m. Saturday. Laberge said there will be a lot of discussion before deciding whether there will be any future trips. It's the least of anyone's concerns, but the division is covering all the costs, Laberge said.
