In School Mentoring (ISM)
Overview
• Meet one hour a week
• During school hours and on school property
• 82 schools
• Currently 213 children mentored
• Excellent corporate program

ISM Program History
Program piloted in 1996 in Peel and Hamilton
based on Dr. Susan Weinberger’s Research (President of the Mentoring Consulting Group)
Started program with Dufferin Peel Catholic School Board in 2001
Dr Weinberger’s Research outlined the tremendous benefits and outcomes for children

Program Overview
• BBBSP works with both school boards • 215 children registered in 84 schools across Peel Region• School Social workers refer children Grades 2-5 • School coordinates the children and parental consent • BBBSP coordinates and manages volunteer recruitment,
screening, matching and monitoring • Volunteers spend 1 hour a week with a child during the
school year on school property• Activity boxes help with relationship development• Caseworkers provide volunteer support

Program Statistics
Teacher surveys are conducted end of each year• 97 of children in this program demonstrated
increase self-esteem• 84% showed improved social skills• 58% benefited academically• 68% developed better problem solving skills • 55% had improved their ability to handle
impulsiveness and feelings of anger• 75% demonstrated a positive influence on their
behaviour• 66% of students reported liking school better

Program Costs and Structure
• Program costs approximately $204,400
• Expenses include:– Salaries of two full caseworkers– Volunteer screening costs– Occupancy Costs - Office Space, Computer
Equipment, Program Marketing– Program Supplies and Materials

Volunteering – Getting Started
• Volunteers must be 18 years old to mentor• Complete following forms:
– Program Application - different from Development application
– Police Check – Confidentiality Agreement– Submit references by employer, family and
character
• In person interview takes place that lasts approximately 1.5 hours
– Talk about personal history, matching process and next steps

Volunteering – Next Steps
– Once paperwork completed, volunteers attend training that includes Child Safety and Match Training
– Caseworkers begin to identify possible child matches making recommendations to volunteers
– Volunteers able to comment and provide feedback during the match process
– Process typically takes up to 2 months but dependant on Police Check

Volunteering – Match Meeting
• When paperwork completed, match meeting coordinated
• Includes Caseworker, Social Worker, School Liaison, Principal, Volunteer
• Review process of coordinating regular match meetings
• Exchange of contact and school information• Review of Child’s history and needs• Child introduced to Mentor and takes the Mentor
on the “Get to Know You” Tour of the School

Volunteer – Corporate Program
– Companies seek opportunities to fulfill CSR responsibilities
– Excellent benefit to both employers and employees
– Lunch and Learn Program – Piloting ISM programs with 2-4 employees– Employers provide staff member with a 1.5
hours to mentor a child during the school year on school property (1 hour mentoring; ½ hour travel)
