MATH 1275

Introduction

u  Title:

u  Using trigonometric functions for solving real life problems.

u  Objective:

u  To find the height of tree that is near the house.

u  Trigonometry simply represents calculations with triangles. It is a study of relationships in mathematics

involving lengths, heights and angles of different triangles. Trigonometry spreads its applications into many

fields such as architect, games, engineering, physics, archaeology, biology, navigation and even

criminology.

Stem Application Picture

Materials & Procedure

u  Materials Required: u  A measuring tape

u  A protractor or a clinometer

u  Trig equation

u  Procedure: u  At first take the measuring tape and measure the distance between house and tree and it will

be the adjacent

u  Then find out the angle of elevation by using protractor or clinometer

u  When we find out the angle and side of adjacent then we have to use trig equation

tanθ=opposite / adjacent to find out the height of that tree.

Solving a Trigonometric Equation

u  Equation:

u  tanθ=opposite / adjacent

u  Solution:

u  tan 450 = x / 50

u  x = 50 * tan 450

u  =50 ft

Conclusion

u  We find out the height of the tree is 50 feet tall and the house is barely safe in distance.

u  The reason we choose this application among others because we realize how important is to know Trigonometry and how to apply it in real life. If we didn’t know how to apply trig, we might have problem with the tree if it is more than 50 feet because it can cause damage during hurricane or any other storm. Now we know it so we will stay alert.
