Lead Article

Having spent more than my fair share of time at sprawling university campusesin the United States - and their gift stores - one of the things that’s alwaysappealed to me about the University of Oxford’s gift shop is just how understatedand classically English it is by comparison.

The dark blue period shop-front blends in perfectly with Oxford’s charming High Street, and the understated appeal continues inside the store, where you’ll find a calm, orderlyatmosphere and a plethora of merchandise that goes a step beyond simple hoodies andsweatshirts with the University name emblazoned across them.

Of course, items like that are available too - all high quality and made to last, but thereal appeal is that there’s so much else to explore: stationary, books, CDs, toys, gifts -and everything in store has an authentic connection to the University or the city.

The collection includes cards and calendars featuring Oxford artwork and photography, books and CDs celebrating Oxford’s historical and cultural heritage and even prints andoriginal paintings from local artists such as David Meeks, Valerie Petts and Mavis Burley;perfect for bringing a little bit of Oxford home, wherever in the world you live.

My favourites have always been the men’s accessories; my dodo tie is a constantconversation piece back in the states (although most of my colleagues mistake thepattern for a duck!) I also love the rich colours of the enamel cufflinks, featuring heraldicshields from all the Oxford Colleges.

There’s a quality about the shop’s products that you don’t often see in some gift shops. That quality, combined with the fact that every item has a story attached to it, meansthey’re likely to be treasured for many years to come.

And tourists needn’t despair; amidst all these fascinating products are, of course, theaffordable collectibles and souvenirs visitors to the city will be looking for, eager tobring something back home to remind them of their visit. But what sets even thesemodest collectibles apart from the normal gift-shop fare is their quality: the mugs andcoffee cups are made from porcelain and bone china, the key-chains are leather, enameland silver plate, even the humble teddy bear is decked out in a miniature embroideredfleece!

From the moment you step into the University of Oxford Shop, there’s the sense thatthey’ve tried to step beyond mere ‘gift shop’ territory and offer something moresignificant. There are some truly lovely products to be discovered here, all thoughtfullychosen both for their quality, and the connection they have to Oxford. Whether you’rea tourist, alumni or just on the lookout for something different, every visit will be atreat, and each time you stop in there’ll be something new to discover.

Attraction Review

The things that you don’t know about the City that you live in, well, you will find

them out on this bus tour with a little added humour to boot!

Will it rain or will it not? Slightly hesitant in our balmy climate, we walked to the

station to embark on our open-top bus tour by City Sightseeing. We collected our

tickets and were directed to the relevant stop. There are two types of buses, one that

has a taped commentary and one with a live guide. We went for the live guide. First on,

we went to the back in true childish fashion and plugged in before take off!

This really is the only way to see Oxford; the views are amazing, being able to peek into

the colleges with their immaculate lawns and centuries-old charm. Let’s face it, we all

love to gossip, so finding out who went to which college was completely fascinating

to me: from royalty and actors to world leaders, they have all studied at Oxford. It

made me very proud to live here hearing all the life-changing events that have been

initiated right here in little old Oxford. I drive around the City all day long and take for

granted the architecture. If this is the only reason you do this tour then I can think of

no better. We live in a beautiful City that is even more beautiful from 30 feet up.

I’d always wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located quite a long

way from the High Street; now that I know that the original sweet shop found there

was Lewis Carroll’s inspiration for the old sheepshop in Alice Through the

Looking-Glass, and so it would be a travesty for it to move. I loved hearing the history

of the grand houses in Central North Oxford, too. Apparently the Oxford University

college dons were originally not allowed to marry, and as when this changed the only

way to snap up an eligible lady was to have a house, it’s not surprisingly the houses all

went up fairly quickly!

You can pop on and off the bus all day, so it’s easy to “do” Oxford in a day. With your

ticket there are lots of discounts in shops and restaurants to make the day even

Attraction Review

This historic House and gardens, still lived in and very much the family home of

the present Lord and Lady Faringdon but now under the protection of the

National Trust, lies in the Oxfordshire countryside just outside Farringdon on the

borders of Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

The House is home to the Faringdon Collection which contains an extraordinary array

of paintings, furniture and objets d'art. The collection holds paintings by Rembrandt,

Reynolds, Rubens, and Murillo. The Saloon, perhaps one of the most memorable rooms

in any house in England, houses the famous series of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite

artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones known as the Legend of the Briar Rose inspired by the

romantic story of Sleeping Beauty.

The gardens are a real treat to explore, especially in early summer. Woodland avenues

radiate from the arch in the East Pavilion concealing a series of sheltered roundels - the

Swinging Garden, where adults can revisit their childhood, is especially appealing. In the

most northerly avenue lies the spectacular Water Garden designed by Harold Peto in

1904.

To the west of the house a descending stairway leads to the enchanting Four Seasons

Walled Garden. Guarding the entrance is a magnificent group of seventeen life size

Chinese terracotta warriors, copies of those found at Lintong, Xi’an in China. And

beyond one can glimpse David Harbor’s recently commissioned Faux Fall.

Our visit ended in the Tearoom with one of the most delicious and beautifully

presented home made teas I have ever had.

Missa Solemnis Sat 11th Jun: BEETHOVEN Missa Solemnis in D major, Op. 123. Miriam Murphysoprano Victoria Simmonds alto Peter Hoare tenor Jonathan Lemalu bass. LondonSymphony Chorus, Marios Papadopoulos conductor.

Writing of the Missa Solemnis Beethoven said ‘My chief aim was to awaken andpermanently instil religious feelings not only into the singers but also into thelisteners.’ There are many arguments over whether Beethoven intended the MissaSolemnis to be performed as a Church Mass. The practicalities of the length of the work and the number ofmusicians required suggests not. However, he was far truer to the texts of the Mass than many othercomposers. We leave it to the audience to come to their own conclusion.

Art & Antiques Review

Liscious the charismatic yet intriguing furniture and antique store found inJericho, now has a sister store, located in the independent area of Summertown.

With the doors recently opened in September, it has proved to be a highly successfulmove for vivacious couple, Fran and Walter Cundy, who hope to bring something verydifferent to the local community. It is obvious that Liscious brings a breath of fresh airto the area, and as a customer who does not wish to hide behind the mask of highstreet stores, Liscious is the perfect place for you. “We thrive on dressing up fashion, giving it a sexy yet dramatic feel,” explains Fran.

Liscious, unlike everyday High street retailers, captures the true essence and originalityof each and every customer. Fran and Walter take pride in both of their stores andintend to make their customers’ experience as pleasurable as possible. Walking into theshop you are instantly intrigued by such a large of array of pieces, all with such anindividual style, ranging from black leather sofas to a collection of puppets in theWindow.

Fran and her artist husband, have a distinguished vision and enjoy the challenge thattheir clients bring to them. Fran can customise anything sold in the shop to her buyers’wishes and all pieces are unique. Frans’ creativity is driven through her customers “I getto know my customers before designing them something. I find out what films they likeand what artists they are interested in as this is what inspires me.”

Frans’ flare for theatre drives her passion for items which may have been lost in timeand forgotten years ago, pieces which are now perceived as something out of theordinary. Frans’ aim is to find these items and reinvent them so you still have that highquality but with a twist of modernity. These are not just pieces of furniture, as Franexplains, “Liscious represents the giving of new life, almost like shaking off the sadnessand celebrating the past life.”

If you’re after that edgy but fantastically modern feel to any room, Liscious is the placefor you, even if it’s just a lamp shade, Liscous offers bundles of character. Trends changeover time, but not here, with Frans’ eye for great buys and ability to combine Victorianfurniture with modern day styles means there is always something perfect for you.“Anything can be reinvented using all types of material from plain grey to purple Frenchsilk, “adds Fran.

In order to share their passion for what some people may find unusual, Fran and Walterhope to hold events which are open not just for friends but customers also. Themednights appear a popular choice giving Fran and Walter a new outlet for their creativityand also an opportunity for Walter to display his art, already on view in theSummertown shop.

Fran and Walter’s ambition is to open a workshop which although still exhibiting piecesof extreme inventiveness, still assists them to share the “true reclamation andarchitectural salvage side of the business, instead of the antique upholstery side withthe pretty French chandeliers” concluded Fran.

Art & Antiques Review

‘The whole universe is based on rhythms. Everything happens in circles…’

John Hartford

Sarah Wiseman Gallery in Summertown, Oxford will be hosting a mixed media summer

exhibition showcasing artists’ work incorporating the theme of ‘a circle’. Inspired by

the wide variety of innovative mixed media work currently being produced, this

exhibition will feature work by Will Kendrick, Martha Winter, Fenella Elms, Rebecca J

Coles, Chris Wood, Rachel Garnell and Waller Hewett.

The exploration of materials is central to the exhibition; bringing structure and order

to their chosen media, each artist’s work is an absolute labour of love. Through the use

of texture, colour, movement and light, common discords of order and chaos, man

made and natural, individual and multiple, depth and scale are addressed. Many

intricate details give each piece an added dimension, allowing the work to be viewed

in its entirety or as individual elements.

Glass and light artist Chris Wood explores the effects of light and dichroic glass through

geometric forms. Playing with the angle of light hitting small squares of glass mounted

on a white background, she creates stunning works of colour and pattern.

Martha Winter plays with light and shade, creating deeply textured surfaces using

natural materials which are painstakingly built up into crater-like structures. Working

with a tension and harmony between the materials and the minimal form, she often

produces work in a series, highlighting similarity and systematic production of work.

Continuing to explore the theme of order and chaos is Will Kendrick, whose work

crosses boundaries between painting and sculpture, as he creates seemingly dripping

surfaces of colour and texture in his bright resin pieces.

This is a fascinating exhibition built out of originality, playfulness, and an exploration

of materials. The existence of natural circles in our universe establishes them as an

instinctive shape to work with, and each of these exhibiting artists uses it to constrain,

and give form to, their work.

As you walk in across the old and creaking wooden floor there is a sense of

satisfaction as you realise this is a shop from yesteryear where the assistants

are well informed and courteous.

It is a welcoming atmosphere where one can browse for a long time without feeling

self-conscious. The space itself is as inspiring as the stock, with the hallmark

idiosyncratic proportions one might expect of a 16th century building.

There is a sense of calm and almost timelessness as one is continuously delighted to

discover the fascinating wealth of maps, prints and photographs of a very fine and

sophisticated quality.

of the 19th century, Sanders' range of prints and maps is rather impressive varying

from British Topography to Mythological, Mezzotint Portraits, Topographical, Decorative,

Sporting, Caricatures, Maritime, Military, Natural History, Literary and Fine Art prints.

If you happen to know Oxford very well as I do, you will be delighted and fascinated

by their range of beautiful Oxford prints.

Interestingly Sanders one of only four antique print sellers outside London, and proudly

the only place outside London to offer a good selection of 18th, 19th and early 20th

century Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints (japanese prints) and book illustrations.

Another unique aspect of sanders is the healthy peppering of original contemporary

prints in the form of lino cut, aquatint, etching which represents oxford outstanding

professional artists society, ‘the oxford printmakers co operative’.

The Old Parsonage Restaurant serves the very best of British food using the finest

produce to create superb traditional dishes. The classic seasonal menu will appeal

to everyone - expect scallops & chargrilled asparagus or confit rabbit and foie

gras terrine, followed by either ribeye steak with roasted shallot butter and salad

or grilled sea trout with champ mashed potato. A good selection of seasonal

classic dishes is on the menu served in this special setting, unique to Oxford.

Situated at the end of the beautiful boulevard St Giles my friend and I entered the

Parsonage via the elegant candlelit terrace of the stone building dating back to 1660.

We went on a Wednesday night when there is always live jazz playing in the main bar

with its Russian red walls covered with original cartoons and portraits. The fire was lit,

the atmosphere was buzzing, the staff friendly and knowledgeable.

To start, I ordered fish soup with saffron rouille and my friend artichoke ravioli. The

waitress informed us that fish and shellfish are flown in twice a week from Jersey in the

Channel Islands and beef, lamb and pork come from owner Jeremy Mogford’s

Oxfordshire Farm, giving them complete traceability.

Main courses arrived in the form of canon of spring lamb, baby leeks & broad beans and

seared skate wing, butter bean pur ée and caper beurre noisette. Both were delicious

and cooked perfectly. Our waitress recommended the Berry’s Claret which went

perfectly with the lamb and Sauvignon Fume blanc which had good acidity and depth

of flavour.

Puddings, an apple tarte fine with cinnamon ice cream with a plateful of English Cheese

which ended the meal perfectly.

The jazz was world class, the double bass and piano adding even more atmosphere to

the evening. You can just have a drink at the bar if you don’t want to eat.

We both agreed that we would come for afternoon tea within the week by the fireside.

I hear the Old Parsonage does a fine champagne tea. The early supper menu is extended

on a Wednesday until 8.30pm for those who want to enjoy the jazz playing from

6.30pm – 8.30pm.

As a venue for any occasion, The Trout in Wolvercote is one of Oxford’s finest all-rounders. Located just 10 minutes from the City Centre, The Trout has a richhistory as one of Oxford’s finest public houses, but was converted to one ofOxford’s most highly respected, and now most popular, restaurants several yearsago.

In the summer, it is a dream location, with a huge terrace flanking the fast flowing river, making it the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch or a chilled glass of wine. Therestaurant has a character of its own, cleverly crafted and preserving the uniquecharacteristics of the former public house, whether it’s a romantic meal for two, acelebration or you just want to snatch a quick bite to eat in the bar, The Trout is a morethan adequate host.

We visited The Trout on a balmy Saturday evening with the children and grandparents. Our waitress was attentive, engaging and thoroughly professional throughout. It is thelaid back atmosphere at The Trout which allows customers to sit back, relax, and bethemselves. We started in the bar, as the last shaft of Spring sun disappeared, with along gin in the bar (not for the kids I hasten to add). On a busy Saturday night, it wasstanding room only, but this was a wonderful way to start a memorable evening.

We then moved on to our table for the meal. Although there were six of us, our starterswere limited to scallops (two of us) and crispy duck salad (two more) and one pottedduck and smoked chicken – Ed was saving himself for his pizza Marguerite. Clean platesall round would imply everyone was satisfied.

Our mains were spread across the board, including sirloin steak with chips (Abi againdevouring something almost twice her size, somehow!), rainbow trout (from theSpecial’s Board), two battered haddocks, small prawn avocado salad small and Ed’spizza. We couldn’t fault the presentation or the taste – I can highly recommend thebattered haddock!

To complement the meal, we ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio Terracotta, Antonio Rubinidella Venezie, chilled, light and perfect for a warm evening.

But we weren’t finished there, and still found room for sumptuous desserts includingEton Mess, apple & blackburrant crumble with vanilla custard and pannacotta withvanilla rhubarb.

The Trout is unique. It is to be reserved for special occasions, but is so welcoming andperfect in so many ways that special occasions can happen on a regular basis – just becreative and I’m sure you’ll think up an excuse!

Set in Little Clarendon Street, Pierre Victoire is just what you would expect of asmart French restaurant. Large windows, a bright painted frontage, even theheavy set back door. All that’s lacking are the tables and chairs al fresco. Sadly,Little Clarendon Street, as the name suggests, isn’t quite wide enough.

Inside, the restaurant is beautifully laid out with rose adorned candlelit tables for two. With a ‘bonjour’ from the waiter, you know you’ve arrived. In the true spirit of theFrench, we stated the evening with a basket of French Bread and two glasses of housewhite. To my surprise, it was the best house White I have ever had.

The selection of starters is good and I chose to try the fresh Cornish Moules in creamysauce. My girlfriend, on the other hand, went with the Peppered Duck in a Mango Chillivinaigrette. The Moules and accompanying sauce were stunning, and the Duck wasperfect.

We ordered two more glasses of House White and waited with excitement for ourmain course. I’d set myself up for more shellfish and plumped for the White Crab meatand Prawn Risotto from the specials board. My girlfriend opted to try their BakedSalmon with Prawn on a base of Shallots and courgettes.

When the main courses arrived, the presentation was excellent and just as good as wewere hoping! The Risotto was full of flavour with a good lemony kick, and althoughvery filling, I managed most of it. The Salmon was a generous portion and coooked toperfection, with delicious vegetables, by far the best dish of the evening. We finishedoff the meal with the pudding menu choosing Sable aux fraises ‘strawberries and creamon a rich shortbread base.’

I was amazed by the amount of cream the chef managed to fit on the shortbread - nodisappointment there. My girlfriend went for a Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla IceCream which was light in texture and not too filling. The chocolate was superb and thefondant was light and fluffy, thoroughly enjoyable. You can’t go wrong with a goodchocolate pudding. Overall it was a friendly, relaxed and enjoyable experience. Theservice was excellent and the food even better. I would recommend Pierre Victoire toanyone wanting a taste of France in Oxford!

Have you ever sat at your desk, wishing you could be in an exotic country, withthe sun shining, a cocktail in hand, and a variety of foods with an array ofdifferent flavours? Kazbar in Cowley Road takes you there, with evocative interiorand sultry lighting, it’s hard to believe you’re just a mile from Carfax! Kazbar maynot be able to offer you sunshine, but for one night, you can feel a million milesaway from Oxford.

The lively atmosphere was noticeable as soon as we stepped inside. Our waiter wasimmediately on hand, offering a warm smile and friendly conversation to make us feelwelcome. We arrived just after the half price Tapas, which is on offer from 5-7pmMonday –Friday and 3-4.30pm Saturday and Sunday. Walking through the restaurant, you cannot resist admiring the unique interior of Kazbar, with high ceilings supportedby dark wooden beams. Candlelit tables create an intimate atmosphere. Moroccantrinkets hang from the ceilings, combined with strings of garlic and Serrano hams.

The seating is around low tables, all of which are incredibly intricate in their individualdetail. As we perused the drinks menu, we were taken aback by the incredible choice, from mysterious rums to Moroccan and Spanish beers. We plumped for a Margaritaand a beer, which went down nicely.

We were spoilt for choice when we came to choose our food. I personally preferred themore flamboyant options, Salpicon Seafood Salad (Squid, Mussels Prawns, octopus, peppers and onion), Ibikha (braised butternut squash chickpeas and Harissa),nevertheless, the traditional favourites, such as Cous Cous and Humous, were extremelywell presented and incredibly delicious.

For those a sweet tooth, indulge! From Turkish Delight to Potito Chocolate (which is asdelicious as it sounds) to my favourite, the Baklava. This is a sweet pudding served withflo pastry, layered with honey and pistachio nuts, and if that wasn’t enough, naturalyoghurt on the side, to give you the perfect combination of flavours.

The finale was a Hibiscus infusion (soothing tangy fruity tea), although, if you’re lookingto send your taste buds out of control, a Kazbar Café Sola (short black coffee infusedwith spices) is the drink for you. This was the perfect end to a fantastic meal.

As we left, we found ourselves discussing our next visit. It was impossible to fault Kazbarwith it exceptional service and out of this world food. Not only were we deciding whennext to visit, we event started to choose what to eat when we went!

For the perfect escape from Oxford, Kazbar is a must.

Either opt for a takeaway if you are in ahurry, or just to sit in the window and watch the world go by

The menu offers a huge range of burritos, fajitas, tacos and salads. But for a true‘Mission Experience’ , you can compose your own ideal burrito just by choosing yourfavourite salsa, beans and fillings, such as chicken, vegetarian, steak or pork.

I would recommend the ‘Carnitas Burrito’. This is a large flour tortilla filled with blackbeans, sour cream, rice, salsa and ‘carnitas’. Carnitas is slow roasted pork that has beenseasoned with fresh bay leaves, orange zest and thyme. The meat is then cooked untilit ‘falls apart’. Ask the waiter for extra cheese and guacamole if you are feelingextravagant!. And of course, there is nothing better than a nice, cool Mexican beer tofinish the dish off.

Don’t worry if you’re not a big fan of spicy food. Mission Burrito has three levels ofsalsas to go with the dishes, the next hotter than the last. But don’t worry, you can tasteeach one before you cover your food! My preference was for the mild Pico de Gallo, which means ‘Roosters Beak’. Legend has it that the name refers to the spiciness or, inmy language, ‘pain’ that you would feel if the rooster were to peck your tongue! Thissalsa consists of diced tomato, chopped onion and spicy Serrano peppers, finished offwith refreshing lemon juice.

The founders of Mission Burrito found their inspiration to open their first outlet aftervisiting the Mission District in San Francisco, California. This is the home of musicianCarlos Santana and is famous for its burritos. Nothing but fresh ingredients are usedwhen preparing the dishes, as in the Californian version

The combination of light wood and cayenne pepper coloured walls gives you theauthentic Mexican feeling. This restaurant is ideal for anyone who appreciates greatvalue for money – isn’t that all of us!?. Moreover, the restaurant tries and succeeds tobe environmentaly friendly.

Mission Burrito offers great food for incredible prices. Make sure you ‘build your own’to get the real benefit of a visit to Mission Burrito.

Mexican food has never tasted as good!

I’ve recently moved to Oxford and I’m gradually working my way around therestaurants. When it came to trying La Cucina in the culinary street of StClements, I wondered if an Italian restaurant in Oxford would surprise me andoffer an Italian experience I would not forget. It certainly did. Even as I’mwriting this now, I’m still thinking about the delicious tiramisu that I had fordessert. I realise how greedy it is of me to skip to dessert before I have even toldyou about anything else, but it just shows you what an effect it had on me!

I had gone past La Cucina before and would not have imagined there was a hiddendepth to the rear where you could sit and overlook the smartly uniformed chefs atwork. I really enjoyed seeing the fresh herbs and juicy vegetables being used by thechefs - it was as if I was in Italy.

It was clear that the staff had good relationships with the customers and had formedstrong bonds with obvious regulars, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise as La Cucinais run by a partnership, Yola and chef Alberto. There is a homely and unique feeling thatis hard to fabricate – everything about La Cucina is genuine.

The menu had a good choice of starters and mains and there was also a vast array ofspecials. For my starter, I had Calamari fritti con limone and for main I had Pappardellecon l’anatra, a type of pasta with duck. David had a crab and avocado salad followedby one of the specials – veal. The presentation of the starters was excellent: thecalamari was cooked to perfection in beautifully flavoured batter and the Insalata digranchio e avocado looked and tasted divine, with excellent quality balsamic vinegardressing the tomatoes.

The mains were also well presented and excellently cooked. The veal didn’t come withpotatoes or extra vegetables, so if you were having this special without a starter thenI would choose one of the side dishes to accompany the main. I had never hadPappardelle con l’anatra before and I would definitely have it again. The combinationof oriental duck against the softness of the pasta worked well and the duck in the pastawas cooked and flavoured to perfection.

Now to the best bit – the dessert! I had the Cucina special tiramisu and David had aTorta di mele - an apple tart. Both desserts were excellent and but the Cucina specialtiramisu was the best I have ever had, served in a coffee cup with softly balancedcoffee it topped off a fantastic evening. As a coffee connoisseur, I don’t always approve‘restaurant coffee’, but this coffee lived up to what it had promised….. it was“wonderful Italian coffee.”

La Cucina would be a great place to take children for a family meal, but it is also a niceplace to go with friends or a partner – it has a genuine continental atmosphere and theprices are very reasonable. A definite to recommend and re-visit!
