Marvão is a village surrounded by walls, that grew up around a castle, on the north side of

S. Mamede Mountain, on a granitic and scarped top with an altitude of 860m.

The village was founded by the Romans and in the Middle Age, it became the setting for many battles, functioningas a watchtower. The village is composed of small typical houses, most of them white, forming narrow streets, alleys, avenues and some gardens.

Being the highest village of Portugal, Marvão, has only a little chance for expanding itself. Thus, its tranquil atmosphere and the exceptional views onto the green valleys transmit much calm and make this village an ideal weekend destination.

In the serenity of the Alto Alentejo Region, guests may enjoy a relaxing experience that is both historical and picturesque.


One of the area’s main attractions is the Leisure Centre in Portagem, which includes a river pool in the Sever River - its principle landmark - this will be an excellent choice

Thanks to the São Mamede Mountains Natural Park, activities like hunting,

fishing and hiking on pedestrian trails are very common, as birdwatching is, a

fascinating activity for all visitors. For all those who love adventure, hang gliding or

and pilgrimages;

the Chestnut Festival (Festa do Castanheiro) in November and the

Al-Mossassa Festival (Islamic Festival)in October are the two events attracting

the most visitors.

In Marvão start your tour within the walls, visiting the medieval castle, and continue with the Municipal Museum inside Santa

Maria church. The museum hosts vestiges of the Paleolithic, ethnographic pieces
