WORLD
City cosmos – beyond the city limits
Wiener Neustadt presents itself against the back-drop of global history in the former 13th-century abbey church of St. Peter an der Sperr. The focus here is on the reigns of Habsburg Emperors Frederick III and Maximilian I, and Wiener Neustadt as their famed seat of power. The city’s historical development – from onetime imperial residence to industrial city and the modern-day centre of innovation it is today – is told through the biogra-phies of key figures.
B
People are on the go, cities grow, history progresses … in a word: the world keeps going round and round. That is why the Lower Austria State Exhibition 2019 is dedicating two exhibition venues in the heart of Wiener Neustadt to the “World in Motion!”.

Human mobility – in the past, present, and future
The Kasematten, a former city fortification and now a unique architectural monument, is where the history of mobility comes to life. The focus of this exhibition is the Wiener Neustadt area and the city’s relationships with the rest of the world. Multi media presentations, fascinating objects and extraordinary biographies form the cornerstones of a time journey through the past, present and fu-ture. How will mobility shape our life in the future?

“Centre of commerce, transport hub, research site … and so much more. It is only when you walk past historic buildings, cross the busy pedestrian zone and enter the historical heart of Wiener Neustadt that you realise just how many highlights the capital of the Vienna Alps has to offer.”
LENA, BÜRO 2019
Austria owes the oldest military academy in the world to Maria Theresa. It was es-tablished 1752 in the castle, the former residence of Emperor Frederick III and his son Maximilian I, which had seen several sieges in the past.
In 1752 it became a training centre for “sturdy officers” and “virtuous men”, at Maria Theresa’s behest – a task it continues to fulfil today. Its own St. George’s Cathe-dral still houses the baptismal font and tomb of Emperor Maximilian I. The 500th anniversary of his death in 2019 is com-memorated with an exhibition on the “last knight” in the military academy.

The Neukloster monastery is a sanctuary in Wiener Neustadt’s pulsating city life, inviting visitors to have a break.
Founded by Emperor Frederick III, the Cistercian monastery has been shaping the cityscape and spiritual life of Wiener Neustadt since 1444. Today it belongs to the Heiligenkreuz Abbey. A tour leads to its art treasures and Cabinet of Curiosi-ties, the valuable library and refectory, not to mention the tomb of Eleonore, wife to Friedrich III. It is located in the abbey church, where Mozart’s famous “Requiem” was first performed in 1793!

It’s hardly surprising that traces of the Habsburgs can be found all over Wiener Neustadt. After all, one of them declared the former Newstatt to be his residence.
In the mid-15th century Emperor Frederick III turned his back on Vienna, henceforth ruling the Holy Roman Empire from Wiener Neustadt. Visited by envoys and merchants from Europe and the Ori-ent, the city saw a golden age. Now the history of the former residential city comes to life with a guided city stroll.

During the World Wars, Wiener Neustadt was a centre of arms industries powered by hydro energy – generated at the Un-garfeld hydro plant, among other places.
The plant went on line in 1917. It is located at the source of the Wiener Neustadt Ca-nal, which is artificially generated from dif-ferent headwaters. The former harbour is now a park, inviting day-trippers to stay. A guided tour of what is now a state-of-the-art hydro plant has much to reveal about the defunct generator, one of two Francis turbines, and other interesting things.

When did people first settle in the region? How did 40,000 tin soldiers end up in Katzelsdorf? And what was everyday Jewish life like?
The answers to these questions can be found in three museums with a long history in this thermal region: the Museum for Contemporary History in Bad Erlach tells the story of the life and expulsion of Jews, Katzelsdorf boasts a universe of tin figures, and Pitten shows the traces of time in the “Land of a Thousand Hills”, just waiting to be discovered.

Past the “20 Shilling View”, across the Kalte Rinne (“cold ditch”) viaduct – past art nouveau villas to the Semmering, the “mecca of summer resorts”.
Carl Ritter von Ghega conquered the Sem-mering passes around 1850 with the first mountain railway in Europe – a technical masterpiece! It transformed the Vien-nese Alps into a “place of dreams” and the Semmering into a destination for artists and summer visitors. You can still feel this attraction today on a trip along the Sem-mering Railway.

Its structures are as fascinating today as ever: the Semmering Railway – a tech-nical masterpiece! This earned the railway the distinction of becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The “Vinoduct Payerbach” is situated in the longest viaduct of the Semmering Railway. Here a multimedia installation takes you on a time journey to the origins of the Südbahn, the Southern Railway. In the meantime, you can taste wines grown in the regions along the railway line. Finally there’s a visit to the Kaiserpostamt – the “Emperor’s Post Office” – in Küb. Pure nostalgia!

In eight minutes the first aerial cable-way in Austria takes you smoothly to an altitude of almost 1,600 metres (5,249 feet)! Step out onto the high plateau and experience the clear air, breathtaking panorama, and unspoiled nature!
After tanking up on energy with a little refreshment, the exploration of the high plateau can begin. There are plenty of destinations: if you have trouble walking far, make straight for the Otto House; it’s easygoing. Serious mountain climbers choose one of three major routes. The grand finale is a banquet for eyes and spirits amidst multi-coloured alpine flora. This is as good as it gets!
