managed a workshop. He had his first race at 17 but his first win was for the 500ccrace

in Port Elizabeth in 1950 when he set a new lap record. He is known for his two

motorcycle Grand Prix wins and three wins at the Isle of Man TT Races. He was killed in

his first race for MV Agusta in Italy on 11th April 1955.

Andrews, Winifred Eugene ‘Win’ née Cowper (aged 96). Born in Dublin, Ireland she

came to Rhodesia in 1919, returned for four years of schooling in Ireland but completed

at Girls High in Salisbury. Qualified as a nurse with her twin sister and worked at General

Hospital in Bulawayo. Married Howard and moved to Matopos then Victoria Falls where

he was Superintendent. Win worked in Departmnet of National Parks until 1981 then

operated the Ops Room in Police Reserve. After 14 years in Harare, she returned to Vic

Falls where she passed away peacefully on 10th April 2014. Mother of Paddy and Roly,

Graham and Sylvine.

Called up for WWII but it ended before he was deployed. Attested with large contingent

to BSAP and sailed on Alcantara in 1946 and completed 20 years’ service retiring as

Chief Inspector. He graduated at Manchester University, UK and taught until retiring in

1988 and sang in Bach choir.

Baker, Kate ‘Midge’ née Durden, passed away on 29th May 2019 in Brussels. She was

at Oriel from 1967 to 1973 and was a Prefect and Captain of the Netball team. She will

be sadly missed by all her family, especially her daughters Bryony and Hayley.

Bulawayo in late 1940s. Driver in and around Fort Victoria then returned to the UK.

Moved to New Zealand around 1960 and passed away 7th August 2014 in Masterton. He

had never married.

Brian, a New Zealander, went to Rhodesia post WWII and farmed at Marandellas. He

volunteered to serve in Malaya. He was one of the 100 to form what became C Squadron

Special Air Services and served the two years from 1951. Widower of Pam and father to

Tony and Taryn, Chris and Micha, Tim and Katie.

mother of Tony and Taryn, Chris and Micha, Tim and Katie; and nana to Sam, Henry,

joined Veterinary Dept. Relocated to South Africa in 1981 and joined de Beers. He

became known as the “Buffalo Whisperer”.

Barnes, Margaret Lancaster née Buckle (aged 92). Wife of Denis who died in 1975 and

mother of Richard, Jan and Jo. 14th March 2001 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Margaret was the

first Rhodesian born woman to study at Oxford University, graduating in 1930 then

worked for the Bulawayo Chronicle in Bulawayo.

Baron, Marshall Philip (aged 42). Died suddenly on 3rd March 1977 in Bulawayo, where

he was born. He studied at Cape Town University and practised law in Bulawayo and

critiqued music for the Chronicle. Rhodesian painter with exhibitions in USA, South Africa

and Rhodesia. Active in liberal politics and stood as an Independent in 1974.

Bennett, Deborah Lynn, née Chamney (48). Wife to Steve, brother of Terry, and

battling chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Formerly Concession-Umvukwes, Salisbury,

Lusaka, Tamworth and Brisbane.

Bennett, Dennis Raymond (aged 81). Husband to Helen, and father of late Ed, John,

Steve and Sue. Prince Edward School and Rhodes University where he earned the name

‘Champ’ by defeating the provincial bantamweight champion. He was with 17th

Rhodesian Battery that traversed Italy in WWII and was a Chartered Accountant. Dennis

passed away on 7th January, 2004 in Harare, Zimbabwe from inadequate medical care.

Bennett, Edward Donald ‘Ed’ and ‘Teddy’ (aged 63). Husband to Val, father of Sandra

and Nicola, and brother to John, Steve and Sue. Chartered Accountant. Suddenly at

home after a seizure on 22nd January, 2011 in Borrowdale, Harare, Zimbabwe.

Bennett, Edward Gibson ‘Ted’ (aged 78). Born in East London, didn’t finish school.

Worked for BSAC retail in Salisbury and farmers financed Ted and his brother-in-law to

open ‘Smith & Bennett’ John Deere agency. They broke sanctions through a branch in

South Africa until it became the biggest outlet in the Transvaal and was closed by the

Americans. Husband of May and father of Dennis and Ronald. Passed away in Salisbury

on 28th April 1973 and had suffered from emphysema which he probably got from the

mustard gas in the trenches before he was captured in WWI.

Bennett, Eileen Heather (aged 55). Wife of Roy and mother of Charles and Casey.

Heather lost their third child, when she was 5 months pregnant after being physically

abused by Zanu-PF activists after they invaded their farm during the 2000 election

campaign. Died with Roy in a helicopter crash in USA on 18th January 2018.

Bennett, Helen, née Ritchie (aged 90). Widow of Dennis, mother of late Ed, John,

Steve and Sue. 23rd September, 2012 in Murwillumbah, NSW, Australia from melanoma.

Born in Sydney, formerly Umtali, Rhodes University, taught at Plumtree and in Salisbury. Bennett, Ivy May née Orsmond (aged 67). Born in King Williams Town and moved to

Salisbury with her husband Ted who she met when he was nursed in her home after

suffering concussion in an away rugby match. Mother of Dennis and Ronnie. 16th October

1968 in Salisbury from cancer.

Bennett, Ronald Dudley ‘Ronny’ (aged 81). Brother of Dennis. Born in Salisbury and

moved to Cape Town where he passed away in 2007.

Bennett, Roy Leslie (aged 60). Born in Rusape, grew up in Karoi, went to boarding

school in Salisbury but joined BSAP at 16. Attended Blackfordby at 21 and farmed at

Karoi, marrying Heather, then bought Charleswood Estate in Chimanimani district in

1993. Voted in for MDC in 2000 but was targeted so left farming in 2004. After

imprisonment he fled Zimbabwe but returned in 2009 and was arrested but his case was

thrown out so he was released from imprisonment and fled to exile in South Africa. He

and Heather died in a helicopter crash in USA on 18th January 2018 during a check-up

for cancer.

degree at Indiana University in 1981.

Birch, Peter (aged 85). 18th September, 2016 in Harare after cancer resurfaced which

had initially been diagnosed in 2008. Widower to Joyce who passed away in August 2013

after a short battle with cancer, and survived by his daughter Joyce. After graduating he

was teaching art at school in Essex, UK then immigrated in 1959 and started teaching at

Lord Malvern School in Salisbury. Peter established an art school with Dulce Wessel that

he later moved to Greenwood Park. He built a castle from local stone on a small holding

in Umwinsidale in the 1980s. The Herald Bird, Frances née West (aged 66). Wife of the late Nick, mother of Kevin, Matthew,

Alex and Bridie and sister of Alex and Trish. 25th January 2016 in Cape Town. RW

Biziaco, Eduardo “Eddie” (aged 60). 29th January 2017 in the Philippines after a short

illness. From Umtali, Ministry of Water Development, 4RR, Secunda then Mossgas, and

moved to the Philippines five years ago.

battle with cancer. Lieutenant, Rhodesian Staff Corps and was Designer and Project

Manager for the RLI Trooper statue. Emigrated to South Africa in 1981 and after a while

started up Oracle Advertising.

Bland, Kenneth Colin (aged 80) on 14th April 2018 in London from colon cancer.

International cricketer until injured running into the perimeter fence when fielding in the

Australian tour of South Africa in 1966/7. He played 21 tests and averaged 49. He

debuted internationally at 18 in 1956 with top score in both innings against England. He

moved to South Africa then coached in England in 1990. He is survived by his wife,

Dorothy and two sons.

Bowman, John Howard (aged 90). Passed away after a horrendous incident when he

and friend Rosie Mitchell were in a kayak on Mpopoma Dam, Matopos. A crocodile

attacked Rosie who had two broken arms and wounds to her chest and on the leg with a

total of 66 lacerations. She recovered after evacuation but John who had not been

injured collapsed. 30th December 2017.

Briggs, David John Peter. 2nd November 1979, Rhodesian Railways guard travelling in

the same locomotive as the driver was killed outright when the southbound train was

fired on at night with an RPG-7 rocket and small arms fire in the area of Lesanth Siding.

He was living in Beitbridge with his wife and young famiy. Brooke-Smith, Margaret Olive née MacLeod (aged 82). Beloved wife of Guy and

darling mother of Andrew, Diana, Fiona, Richard and Joanne and grandmother of Wade,

Amber, Callum and Catriona. Passed away in Louis Trichardt on 4th March, 2016 after

battling Parkinson’s Disease for a few years. Resting in peace now sadly missed.

Chapman, Neil (aged 80). Born on a farm in Underberg, Natal, schooled in

Pietermaritzburg and was DUX at Maritzburg College. Taught mathematics and studied

music in South Africa, Vienna and Milan. Was chorus master at PACT and at the SABC.

Come to Rhodesia as Director of Rhodesian College of Music and conductor of the

Salisbury City Orchestra. He inspired a generation of musicians and was guest conductor

in former USSR, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, the UK and New York. Married to Emma and

father to Catherine and Maggie. He died following an operation on 20th March 2014.

Lancasters, then posted as instructor to Rhodesia. In 1948 became airline pilot for

Central African Airways, Sabena Airways, Air Congo and Air Zaire during which time he

was preferred pilot by Tshombe and Mobutu, clocking up 23,000 hours from Tiger Moths to 747s. Moved to Salisbury in 1972 with his second wife Diana née Wheeler and flew for

Afretair. In 1980s was an instructor for SAA in 747s. FLF

his tail rotor in South Africa. Vic had been awarded SCR when Flt Lt, RhAF for bravery

when wounded for rescuing his injured tech using a captured AK47 on the ground after

the Alouette III he was flying was shot down into fire in December 1976.

radiation treatment. PATU and architect with CONEX, he was arrested after a severe

beating during a search for weapons of war which resulted in hospitalisation in 1982. He

fled the country on bail but was awarded compensation later. Fred and Flo worked for

Edward School and also worked in Umtali. She married Peter Gilbert who was a

teacher/lecturer and they had a son Peter. They moved to Johannesburg in 1984 and

retired in Benoni were she passed away on 26th December 2001 after suffering from

Altzheimers.

Abducted from his farm Diepfontein in Tandaai near Cashel on 11th September 1979 with

his tractor driver. Despite follow ups he was not found until the driver returned after the

December ceasefire and his body was located. Born in Newcastle, England, Deryck was

decorated with the DFC after surviving several crash landings in WWII. He worked in

Mombasa, Kenya, before moving to Salisbury where he worked on a tobacco farm. He

bought Diepfontein in 1949 and moved there with Barbara, a WREN during the war.

(Tinto Industries and Ajax Refrigeration). Well known in farming communities in

Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. Always joked that he came to Rhodesia on holiday in

in France and died on 14th December 1951. His grave in Church Yard at Ste Marguerite

des Loges, in France adjoins that of Royce Love, his cousin.

Love, Wilfred Royce. In a skirmish with fifteen FW 190s on 17th August 1944 during the

battle for the Falaise gap in Normandy, two were damaged but F/Sgt Love, with 256 Sqn

Typhoon, did not return. His brother, John Love, was fighting in Florence in Italy at that

time.

MacDonald, Andrew William ‘Andy’ (aged ~51). Born in Springs, Andy schooled at

Milton. When farming in Zambia he represented Rhodesia at rugby and played five tests

as tight-head prop for the Springboks on their Australia/New Zealand tour of 1965. Back

on the farm at Zimba, north of Livingstone, in Zambia in December 1966, Andy shot a

lion that had been killing cattle. It was wounded but he tracked it and was leapt upon.

Andy weighed 107kg when playing rugby and was still strong but lost a finger during the

wrestle before he broke away and the lion finally succumbed to its wounds. He returned

to Zimbabwe and was farming in Figtree/Marula area when he and Lettie, his wife, were

ambushed on the road back from Bulawayo during dissident activity and their breeding

of dogs for the Police made them unpopular. They were killed and the car set alight. 18th

August 1987.

Millar, Thomas Campbell “Tommy” and “Cyclops” (aged 63). Tommy lost his battle to

cancer on 4th August 2018. School prefect, head of Palmer House, and excelled at sport

at Umtali Boys High. Graduating at Gwebi in 1975 he was awarded Rugby, Athletics and

Cricket Colours having been picked for Mashonaland Districts Cricket and Rugby.

He was a well-known dairy, sheep breeder and crop farmer in the Beatrice area. Sadly a

large portion of his property was taken but he simply soldiered on serving on many

committees and boards. Miller, Christine née Tarr, died unexpectedly during a CT scan in Klerksdorp on 24th

February 2017. Attended Chaplin School, Gwelo and lived in Stilfontein. Her husband

Terry died in October 2013 after suffering kidney failure. RASA

They were driving from Esperance Coffee Estate, Mt Selinda, to join the Chipinga to

Umtali convey to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary in Salisbury when she was

killed instantly by a landmine blast near Chipinga. 17th March 1978.

Nicholson, Keith. 14th September 2011 on the Raffingora Road, Banket, while trying to

rescue Tim Morgan who was being driven away in his Toyota twincab that had been

stolen. Four heavily armed men had gained entry into the Gold Dust Village at

Mazvikadei Dam and waited in the Morgan home until they returned from work in the

evening. Tim’s wife alerted neighbours when Tim was taken. Keith took off in pursuit

accompanied by Henry Allam and others. After a gunfight when the assailants stopped to

confront them, Keith approached the vehicle when he thought the gang had fled but one

hiding in Tim’s ute shot him. Tim was unhurt and freed. Keith had farmed in Raffingora,

the DRC and Zambia before returning recently to retire.

tests for South Africa from 1957 to 1965. During the tour to Australia of 1963-64 he and

his brother David, together with Peter and Graeme Pollock, were the first pair of two

brothers in the same test match. He also represented Rhodesia 65 times and was

captain for 34. Passed away on 17th November 2006 at Southbroom, KwaZulu Natal,

Selous Scouts. A charismatic leader, he was admired by all who served him. His unit was

accused of ivory smuggling and he was court-martialled for insubordination during a

confrontation after discovering that his office had been bugged. He resigned his

a daughter Lindsay. Appointed a Technical Officer at Grasslands, Marandellas, then

Animal Husbandry Officer, and promoted to Northern Rhodesia until early retirement as

Chief Animal Husbandry Officer in 1967. Senior Lecturer at Gwebi College of Agriculture

1967 and Principal in 1970 until 1976. Appointed Project Manager of Keiskammahoek

Irrigation Scheme in 1976, then a Regional Manager in 1980. Retired in 1998 to

Ramsgate on the Natal South Coast where he passed away on 6th June 2014.

2003 at Rosebank, South Africa after a protracted struggle with cancer.

Della and Julie. Born in Arcturus and was a motor mechanic doing call-ups with BSAP

Reserve. Moved to UK in 1982. Julius suffered a severe stroke 20 years previously but

had amazing determination and ready smile.

two bouts of rheumatic fever but signed up for five years with RLI, 2 Commando, after

Prince Edward School. After another 12 months he left the army and was married to

Janette for a while. Between South Africa and Zimbabwe, JP married Jill. He was

suffering from cancer of the liver and passed away on 19th November 2002 in Richards

Bay, KwaZulu Natal, during an interlude in South Africa.

passed away. They moved to be with Bridget in UK but after three years Beryl passed

away from COVID-19 and Gary who had been in a home suffering from Alzheimer’s

passed away shortly before Beryl.

Strover, Roger. Roger matriculated at Plumtree School and graduated at UCT then

worked at Groote Schuur before Kitwe and Bulawayo. He married Margaret ‘Tigh’

Ketteringham and specialised in London and Edinburgh before returning to Groote

Schuur where he proceeded to become Head of Plastic Surgery. In private practice he

set up the Melanoma Clinic in Cape Town until retirement in 2006. Passed away on 14th

November 2015 and is survived by son Bruce and daughters Tracey and Samantha. FLF

Passed away on 15th February 2016 after a battle with cancer. Con served with

Stuart-Steer, Rhoda Mona née Maintjies. 6th July 2014 after a long illness. Wife of Con

and played an active role in the welfare of the troops under his command in Rhodesian

Sugden, Betty Sylvia (aged 96). Veterinarian, graduated from Royal Veterinary College

where she met her husband to be, Dick. Emigrated to Rhodesia in 1955 where she

worked until a home robbery at her home in Ruwa in 2002. Dick had passed away the

previous year. She moved to the UK to be near her son Richard. She passed away in her

sleep in Hook on 21st January, 2016. RW

Tagney, Terry. An Australian who had served in the Royal Australian Regiment. After

Support Commando, RLI, he finished his Rhodesian army career in the Army

Photographic Section but not before black kangaroo images had been spray painted on

several RhAF aircraft. Terry died in 2007.

Tarr, Wrex (a few days before his 72nd birthday). Married to Beryl Lancaster and father

to Berenice, Giselle and Darryl and remarried to Merrellyn Churchman. News presenter,

comedian and archer. Ran a swimming pool business and was renowned for Chilapalapa

songs. Relocated to South Africa and was involved with St Francis Conservancy Project.

He died from a heart attack on 11th June 2006 while entertaining in East London, South

Tasker, Rob. Died in plane crash near Francistown, 29th June, 2013. From Bulawayo.

Tathan, Glenn (aged 72). Passed away on the night of 13th May 2019 in Greendale,

Harare. Boarded at Highlands School then a day scholar at Mt Pleasant, and graduated

with Course 18 at Gwebi College of Agriculture. After farming he joined National Parks to

become Chief Warden at Wankie, then Provincial Warden after Independence. He tried to

stamp out poaching so clashed with authorities but was arrested so he left NPWLM in

1994. Glenn continued conservation work with rhinos in the valley. He has two sons,

Ralph and Michael, and was a devout Christian.

was in Clansthal, KwaZulu-Natal.

Taylor, Don. Husband of late Iris. Viciously murdered in his home in Bulawayo on 24th

Tholet, Clem (aged 56). Married Jean Smith in 1967 who was the daughter of the Prime

Minister. Born in Salisbury, Clem started writing music when studying art at Natal

University in Durban, then moved back to Rhodesia into advertising. He sang with ‘The

Kinfolk’ then ‘The Legend Trio’ and solo. Rhodesian television shows, a couple of albums,

and troop shows earned a strong following. He moved to Cape Town where he passed

away on 6th October 2004.

Ranch then went on to become Managing Director of Debshan Ranches and served for

many years on CFU. He retired in Harare and enjoyed fishing to the extent that he lost

the lower part of his right arm to a crocodile attack. David is survived by his wife Margie

and daughter Carine and son Malcolm.

Tulip, Wendy Ann (aged 32). Elder sister of Mo, daughter of John and Agnes. Wendy

attended Umtali Junior, Chancellor Junior, then Umtali Girls’ High. She worked at a

chemist until old enough to enrol at Groote Schuur for her SRN. After nursing she

returned for training in midwifery. Keen in sport, she became head of the geriatric ward

in Umtali Hospital. She was afflicted with multiple sclerosis at the age of 25 and

eventually was confined to a wheel chair. Travelling with her family on a holiday to

Durban, she was killed instantly when their vehicle detonated a landmine in the convoy

on the main road from Umtali to Fort Victoria on 16th April 1979. UGHS – Steve

attack when he was about to board an aircraft with Eunice. Served with the Black Watch

at the end of WWII. Returned to Rhodesia to Staff Corps and Southern Rhodesia

Regiment. In 1951 he was selected 2ic of the Malayan Scouts under an experienced

British officer but on arrival he was promoted to Major and took over the command.

After Staff Commands and attending Staff College at Amberley in UK, he assumed

command of the RLI then Commander 2 Brigade. Chief of Staff, Army Commander and

Commander of Combined Operations until retirement as Lieutenant General to South

Africa in late 1980.

mother – left school at 14, fireman to locomotive engine driver, worked with unions in

Northern Rhodesia and strong advocate for the formation of the Federation of Rhodesia

and Nysasaland and was its second and last prime Minister. He stood for the United

Federal Party but Clifford Dupont won the seat for the Rhodesia Front. Sir Roy moved to

England after Zimbabwe and passed away in Dorset, UK on 5th December 1991.

the Sommabula to open the pharmacy there in 1910.

Craig. Farmed in Nyamandhlovu. Passed away on 8th February 2019 from cancer.
