Guide to

Downlights

In July 2012 new regulations were introduced to ensure safer installation of down lights with insulation. Down lights must be clearly marked regarding this (refer table Pg2).

Note: Recessed lights without these marking do not comply with the new regulations.

Markings:

• CA - Insulation abutted but not covering the down light.

• IC– Insulation can abut and cover the down light.

• Thetransformer in all cases is recommended to be above insulation and as far away from fitting as possible.

what do you need

When choosing the appropriate down light you need to consider:

to know

Howyouwantthelighttoperforminthe

room/spaceitislocated.

It is important to consider the function of the room and the affects you are after. Is the light for:• General Purpose Lighting?

• Accent Lighting?

• Or a combination of these

Areyoulookingforthemostenergy

efficientoption?

LED is by far the most energy efficient option available. However when considering LED you need to consider a few points:• Are you planning to use LED lamps in

a down light fitting or use a dedicated (integrated ) LED down light.

• The spacing and number of down lights required.

• The lumen output required from each fitting

• The beam angle of the LED

Tighter beam angles can be more suited to accent lighting (highlighting an object) rather than ambient lighting (general lighting).

Areyoulookingtoreplaceanyexisting

lightfittings?

If this is the case you may want to try and match the existing size of the hole (refer to cut out guide). Some remedial work may be required to achieve the correct hole size.

Howmanydownlights?

Use the formula bellow as a quick guide to determine how many lights you need in your room

Tipandtricks

Higherceilingheight- consider how your fittings will distribute the light. You may place the fittings closer together and use narrow beam fittings over work areas.Darkinteriorcolours - (curtains, walls and carpets etc) will reduce overall light effect. Additional/Higher number of lights will be required.general- To compliment your lighting plan consider using additional light fittings such as table and floor lamps, wall lights. This is a guide only. We recommend for more accurate lighting requirement you consult a lighting specialist.
