Texas Catholic Pro-life day is Saturday, January 27th, at the capitol. We would like everyone to mark their calendars for this special event. There will be sidewalk prayer vigil, rosary for life, pro-life Mass and a rally. More details are forthcoming.

Dear parishioners,

Hope is the virtue of a new year. The virtue of hope has many facets that reflect the wisdom and grace of God. Hope is not a blind trust but there is an assurance that God has guided and protect us in the past and so we look forward to a future that is unknown but has the key element of the hand of God.

The gem assigned to January is the garnet. This deep red stone reflects light to produce a unique and enchanting color. When the garnet is cut with facets, all of the refractions of light produce a kind of movement. With this in mind, we can see why this stone is associated with the moth of January.

We do not know what tomorrow will bring, but we believe with plenty of evidence as proof that the light of God will enter into each facet of our life and produce a movement of sanctifying grace.

A Latin phrase describes well the first moments of the New Year, “Per ardua ad astra!” Which is translated: Through difficulty to the stars! If our first steps into the New Year are difficult ones or if we walk through a difficult path in the months to come, let us remember that we are on the path to the stars, a shining path that leads us to God.

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR/CARTA DE NUESTRO PARROCO

Queridos Feligreses,

La esperanza es la virtud de un nuevo año. La virtud de la esper-anza tiene muchas fases que reflejan la sabiduría y la gracia de Dios. La esperanza no es una confianza ciega, pero existe la certeza de que Dios nos ha guiado y protegido en el pasado, por lo que esperamos con ansias un futuro desconocido, pero con el elemento clave de la mano de Dios.

La gema asignada a enero es el granate. Esta piedra de color rojo ob-scuro refleja la luz para producir un color único y encantador. Cuando el granate se corta con facetas, todas las refracciones de la luz producen una especie de movimiento. Con esto en mente, podemos ver porqué esta piedra está asociada con el mes de enero.

No sabemos qué traerá el mañana, pero creemos con una evidencia abundante como prueba, que la luz de Dios entrará en cada faceta de nuestra vida y producirá un movimiento de gracia santificadora.

Una frase latina describe bien los primeros momentos del Año Nuevo, “¡Per ardua ad Astra!” Que se traduce: ¡A través de la dificultad a las estrellas! Si nuestros primeros pasos en el nuevo año son difíciles o si nos encontramos en un camino difícil en los próximos meses, recordemos que estamos en el camino hacia las estrellas, un sendero luminoso que nos lleva a Dios.

World Marriage Day! This year we will recognize all couples who have a milestone wedding anniversary in 2017 & 2018. Are you wanting to learn more about our faith? Are you just sitting in your car waiting for your kids to get out of religious education classes? Take that leap of faith because we have something for you. Classes will be offered on Wednesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. in English with Anna Lara in the Knights of Columbus room (PAC301) and in Spanish with Art Lara in room 208 in the Education building.

On Sundays, we will have a Spanish session at 9:45 a.m. in room 208 of the Education Building.

This is open to everyone come join us for this year’s Adult Faith Forma-tion Program. Classes will follow the RE calendar for the year. For more information please contact the RE Office.

DCYC - DCYC is the Diocesan Conference for Catholic Youth. This conference is for high schoolers. Registration is now open, come by the RE Office to register or contact Alex Smith for more information.

Sponsor-A-Youth! We will be participating in DCYC again this year! Many students would like the opportunity to participate but their families struggle financially. DCYC gives our youth an opportunity to learn about and grow in the Catholic faith with over 2,000 youth throughout the diocese.

Youth will participate in adoration, reconciliation, workshops and mass with the Bishop. Their relationship with Christ will be strength-en and they will return to our parish filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit! This year’s DCYC theme is “Fully Alive”.

Please keep our youth, our ministry team and our volunteers in your prayers as we plan and prepare for this year’s DCYC. Please prayerfully consider sponsoring a youth this year, cost of the event is $215 per participant. Adult Faith Sacramental Sessions will be offered on Mondays starting: January 22, 2018. These sessions run from 6:30-8:00 pm for 10 weeks. These sacramental preparation classes are for adults who have already celebrated the sacrament of Baptism in the Catholic church and who wish to celebrate the Sacraments of First Communion and/or Confirmation. If you are interested in participat-ing in these 10-week sessions please contact the RE Office at 512-312-2520 ext. 137, to register.

BAPTISMSAs we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we are reminded of the guidelines set by the Diocese when baptizing a child:

✓ If the PARENTS are not members of this church, a letter from the parish in which they reside or are registered must be presented, giving permission for the child to be baptized at Santa Cruz. This must be done prior to registration for baptism.

✓ Copy of the State birth certificate for the child being baptized.

✓ Single godparents must be practicing Catholics living according to the norms of the Church.

✓ Godparents must have received all the Sacraments of initiation: Baptism, 1st Communion and Confirmation.

✓ All married godparents must be married by the Catholic Church. A copy of their Church marriage certificate must be presented.

✓ Parents and godparents must attend a Baptismal class prior to the Baptism. If class is taken in another parish, proof of attendance must be presented.

✓ All baptism documents must be received in the office before Baptism date and/or class can be set.

BAUTISMOSAl celebrar el Bautizo de Nuestro Señor, se nos recuerda de los requi-sitos de la Diócesis al bautizar un bebe:

✓ Si los PADRES no son miembros de esta Iglesia, necesitaran presentar una carta de la Parroquia a la que pertenezcan, ya sea por residencia o donde se encuentren registrados, dando permiso para bautizar al bebe aquí en Santa Cruz. Esto se requiere antes de registrarse para bautizar.

✓ Copia del acta de nacimiento del Estado del niño(a)

✓ Padrinos/Madrinas solteros(as) deben ser Católicos practicantes viviendo según las normas de la Iglesia.

TEC is a high energy and spirit filled retreat where young adults explore and deepen their faith. Weekends are filled with witness talks, group discussions, personal reflections/prayer, recreations and live music. The TEC retreat is for young adults ages 17 (or a 2nd semester junior) and up.

TEC of Central Texas is a 3-day retreat hosted at Eagles Wings Retreat Center. You will experience a fresh, faith-filled atmosphere away from home, school, and/or work. Retreat participants meet, reflect, and share how they see themselves, their ideals, and their hopes/dreams while finding God’s presence in their life.
