The 2015 Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign is here! With the help of Bethel, we can once

again help to raise enough money, awareness and food to to help end hunger in Minnesota. Food

and funds gathered by out congregation go to help the Sabathani Food Shelf.

Help us Pack the Pews on Sunday, March 22nd! Help us Pack the Pews on Sunday, March 22nd! Help us Pack the Pews on Sunday, March 22nd! Help us Pack the Pews on Sunday, March 22nd!

Many houses of worship will be gathering with bags of groceries over the weekend of March 21-22,

as an offering from God’s people to those in needs. Consider bringing a bag of non-perishable food

items that Sunday for church, or make an added contribution to MN Foodshare in the offering plate.

If you are wondering what to donate, local food shelves need all types of food, paper, personal hy-

giene and cleaning products. Sabathani could especially use personal hygiene products, like soap,

shampoo, toothpaste, etc. When you make a cash donation, food shelves can stretch cash donations

further because of their access to discount products and programs. Cash also gives them more flexi-

bility to acquire perishable items like fresh produce, meat and dairy products.

Easter Garden of Memories This year we will have Easter lilies and azaleas for the Easter Garden of Memories. After service on Easter Sunday (April 5) volunteers will deliver the flowers to our homebound members who cannot be with us for our Easter worship. There are two ways that you can contribute to the Easter Garden of Memories: 1. Your envelopes for March contain an envelope for use for the

Garden of Memories. It should be put into the offering plate or mailed in to be received by March 22nd (the Fifth Sunday in Lent)

2. The regular sign up sheet will be available in the Narthex on Sundays thru March 22nd. You can sign up and make your donation that way also.

Pie Jesu

Very often we hear different settings of Pie Jesu during the Lenten season, so I thought that you might be in-terested to know where the text comes from and what the English translation is. According to Wikipedia, “Pie Jesu, is a motet derived from the final couplet of the Dies Irae and is often included in musical settings of the Requiem.” Requiem (or Requiem Mass,) is the Mass for the Dead, a Mass celebrated for the repose of the soul of the dead. The musical setting of the Requiem is quite large and usually consists of several movements. Dies Irae is a famous Latin hymn on the Day of Judgment. The poem describes the Day of Judgment, when the last trum-pet sounds summoning souls before the throne of God, where the saved will be delivered and the unsaved will be cast into eternal flames. It is most commonly used as a sequence in the Requiem. And Pie Jesu is the last couplet from Dies Irae. The original Pie Jesu text from Dies Irae only consisted of:

(Latin) (English) Pie Jesu Domine, Pious Lord Jesus, Dona eis requiem. Give them rest. Pie Jesu Domine, Pious Lord Jesus, Dona eis require sempiternam. Give them everlasting rest. There are several Pie Jesu settings, but the most recognizable one may be the one by the French composer Gabriel Faure. However, much later, the famous Requiem set by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Pie Jesu text was combined with Agnus Dei. Therefore, the lyric became: Pie Jesu, Pious Jesus,

Qui tollis peccata mundi, Who takes away the sins of the world, Dona eis require. Give them rest. Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, Qui tollis peccata mundi, Who takes away the sins of the world, Dona eis requiem, Give them rest, Sempiternam Requiem. Everlasting rest. Next time, when you hear Pie Jesu playing on the radio, in a concert hall, or in a church setting, you will be able to listen more carefully and follow along with an understanding of what the Latin lyrics mean. In reflection,

This is a Day Camp for South Minneapolis congregations!

It has been happening for over 10 years. This year, we get to host it!This year, we get to host it!This year, we get to host it!This year, we get to host it!

We spend the morning in song, and rotation lessons … with a snack. We feed everyone lunch. Then we field trip in the afternoon. (YWCA to swim, nature center, movie at the Riverview, CES/Augustana for service projects!) Or we sometimes stay here to learn about rabbits, gardening, and solar.

I think the price this year is $25 per kid, and not more than $50 per family!

We have a blast. We have a blast. We have a blast. We have a blast. Some parents of the youngest kids stay the first day to be sure they are com-fortable with what is happening.

Her special needs son. John’s leukemia is back with a vengeance, and the doctors have not given him much

time to live. I believe John is in his 20s. The family appreciates our prayers.

Board of Administrators Anna Olsen, President

Several weeks ago I had the privilege of attending the Minneapolis Area Synod Toolkit Conference Assembly. Bethel hosted this gathering of over 200 folks. We were welcomed by Bishop Ann Svennungsen. She set the tone for the day with several questions: Does it matter that we’re Lutheran and how does our Lutheran lens help us lead worshiping communities. I attended two breakout sessions and I hope to share more thoughts with you at a later time.

We are now joining the Mission Council at the beginning of our meetings to share what is happening with each board. We then meet individually to finish the projects we are working on. This way we can communicate directly to move forward with ideas more efficiently.

The storm water management team will be meeting with a landscape designer shortly to help with the implementation of rain gardens on our property. He will also be able to help us apply for grant money.

The sanctuary facelift committee met to discuss possible options for our pews. A presentation will be given at our annual meeting in March.

Ann Allison has agreed to help with the retraining of our staff and ushers on the proper use of our defibrillator. Thank you Ann.

Your faithful servant, Anna Olsen, President

Mission Council

The Mission Council met Tuesday, February 10. Building on the conversa-tions we had in late January at our joint leadership retreat with the Board of Administrators, we coordinated our meeting time to allow for a combined session of board and council. Thanks to the Board for a thoughtful devotion exploring the work of one of our sister ELCA congregations to invite its sur-rounding community in for a weekly meal. In March, we will again overlap our meeting time with the board's, as part of an overall effort to reduce the burden on Pastor Brenda, to build relationships among Bethel's leadership bodies, and to be efficient with our members' time and talents.

The Mission Council is energized and focused after a productive leadership retreat. We took the opportunity at our February meeting to map out goals for the next twelve months of our work. These goals include: to work with the Outreach/Welcome and Children/Youth/Family committees more explic-itly around growing and deepening the relationships in our community; to support the exploration of a new youth ministry approach; to seek opportu-nities for engagement within the congregation and with our neighbors as Bethel learns about and implements best practices in storm water manage-ment and rain gardens; to continue to seek ways to utilize the Bethel city block as a gathering place and resource for community activities; and to pursue opportunities to engage our community in social justice work. We invite your ideas, feedback, and efforts in pursuing these common goals as a community of faith. In peace, Sarah Berke
