IN FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES 2010 3
GreetingsFrom The Team
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to our Second Edition of In French with English Subtitles! With this unique festival, we are able to premiere the most recent mainstream French films not released in America.
We feel that we can fulfill an even greater purpose through this weekend of French films by supporting two worthy foundations: Make-A-Wish Foundation ® of Metro New York and L’Entraide Francaise.
We would like to heartily thank last year’s loyal sponsors who are again lending us their generous support as well as all of those new to the ranks who have enthusiastically joined us in this cause.
As part of this weekend’s highlights, several well-known directors and actors will talk about their work in Q and A sessions after their films.
We are very proud to welcome director, Alexandre Arcady, who will be presenting the opening night movie, Comme les 5 doigts de la main, along with the accomplished actress Caterina Murino.
And, as he promised when he was here last year, Pascal Elbé has come back, this time as Honorary President of the Festival, to present
his debut film as a director, Tête de Turc.
As you leaf through the program, it will become clear that solidarity is the dominant theme of our 2010 selection. This reflects our true feelings about this festival, for it is with the fellowship of all involved that we are able to bring you this great weekend of French films.
So sit back and enjoy this year’s In French With English Subtitles!

Entraide Française
L’Entraide Française is very pleased and proud to be one of the two selected non-profit associations for this second annual French Film Festival in New York City. We would like to express all our gratitude to the In French With English Subtitles team for creating and implementing this thrilling and remarkable event.
Your participation in the Festival, as an audience, is directly helping us accomplish our mission supporting French-American people in temporary jeopardy, mostly children, in the Greater New York area. Together,
once again, we will prevent families in precarious situations from falling into deeper distress. Together, we will give American born children the opportunity to keep learning French and therefore preserve the gift of bilingualism.
We thank you all, movie-lovers, sponsors, friends, volunteers for being here tonight.
Enjoy the Festival!

Alexandre Arcady
Born in Algeria, director, producer and screen writer Alexandre Arcady has dedicated his life to theater and the film industry. Getting his start as a director for the Theatre of Suresnes, France, he launched his career in cinema, producing a film by his wife, Diane Kurys, called Diabolo Menthe, a story about adolescence. In 1979, he directed his first feature length film, Le Coup de sirocco, the first one of a successful trilogy, to be followed by Le Grand pardon I and Le Grand pardon II. Le coup de Sirocco, starring Roger Hanin and Patrick Bruel, is a film whose inspiration is very personal, about the immigration of the lower-middle class “pied–noirs” (black foot, or the name given to Algerians of European origin) at the time of repatriation, after the independence of Algeria, in 1962.
On the other hand, the two other films of the trilogy take us into the heart of the Jewish mafia. As he himself comes from a family that was “repatriated” to France from Algeria, he has strong ties to his roots as well as to the exiled Jewish community. It is from this that he drew his inspiration as well, when he directed Le Grand carnaval in 1983 followed by Dernier éte à Tanger in 1987, two feature length films in which the action takes place during the allied landing in North Africa. On a lighter side, Alexandre Arcady has written such romantic comedies as Dis-moi oui (1995) and Mariage mixte (2004), as well as Tu peux garder un secret (2008).
He has also shown another side, directing such thrillers as Holdup (1985), L’Union sacrée (1989), K (1987), and Entre chiens et loups ( 2002).
With his latest film, Comme les 5 doigts de la main, we see him again drawing inspiration from his past. Coming across an old photo of himself and his brothers when they were young, the idea came to him to tell about the emotions he felt upon seeing it. Afterwards, when he learned about a senseless act of violence against two young boys, Alexandre Arcady found the hook for his movie: the story of five brothers united to defend one of their own being pursued by a gang of traffickers.
All the elements dear to him are in this film: the solidarity of a Jewish family shown through both a story of intrigue and mystery as well as one of love! He is the father of Alexandre Aja, who directed The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors, starring Kiefer Stherland, and Piranha 3D.
At first a director of a theatre, then a producer, and finally a very successful director, his personal family story is the background of his work. Portrait of very popular film maker.

Rightfully following in the footsteps of Monica Belluci, Caterina Murino is a former Italian top model. Like Ms. Belluci, she also has a passionate expression as well as a sensual profile, and her title of 3rd runner up for Miss Italy in 1996 opened doors for her to the world of glamour. But the beauty wanted to be an actress and so she enrolled in acting classes in 1999. She had her first role on the stage in William Shakespeare’s Richard the Third, and acted in various TV series’, most notably in Casanova. The French movie going public discovered her in 2003 in Alain Berberian’s L’Enquête corse. In it, she played alongside Christian Clavier, who got her involved in the third version of Les Bronzés two years later.
Jean Dujardin and Pascal Elbé were both charmed by her in the romantic comedy L’Amour aux trousses. She auditioned for the role of a James Bond Girl while suffering from a broken rib, unable to even walk. In spite of this handicap, she landed a role in Casino Royale, launching her career into the international arena. The film set off an avalanche of offers for other roles.
Besides Italian, Caterina Murino speaks both French and English fluently and since childhood has been actively involved in horseback riding and dance. She has devoted herself to an Organization promoting medicine and research in Africa (AMREF) for which she is an enthusiastic spokesperson.
She lives in Paris and has, along with Virginie Ledoyen, recently joined the cast of a series for Canal+ called XIII.
Caterina Murino Beautiful, talented, sensual... Caterina Murino has all that it takes to be a star. Already a James Bond girl, she is about to pursue her international career, thanks to her ability to master half a dozen different languages.

QUOTES Alexandre Arcady| DirectorHow was it that you waited so long to make such a personal movie? I had come across a picture of my childhood where my brothers and I are all lined up, and it inspired me to talk about us. To be the oldest of five leaves an impression on you, a certain way of being, and of looking at life. Filmmakers often draw from their own personal experiences for their major themes.
Why are you so drawn to family stories? The family is our foundation stone, our base and whatever the conflicts and the differences might be, it’s only family that can give you a real anchor. The ideals of family values exploded because of the events of May ’68 but time has healed that. The movie industry of today reflects those ideals... that nothing is better than family to combat loneliness.

QUOTES Dominique Farrugia | Co-DirectorThere were two jobs. First, the screen writing job, with 18 different versions being sent back and forth between us each time. And second, having to make the most of the time together on the set, while every evening, re-reading the next day’s scenes which constantly needed changing. Arnaud Lemort | Co-DirectorFinally, like in a lot of Anglo-Saxon comedies that we like so much, we worked a lot on the supporting roles (Jonathan Lambert, Laurent Lafitte…), to make them an integral part of the film, even if they were only in three or four scenes. All the characters of the film had something to contribute. Clovis Cornillac | ActorOnce I discover the finished film, I always have the same feeling of disappointment. Instead of seeing the character I was playing, I see myself, even though during the shooting I am completely convinced that I am actually somebody else!
Globetrotting aid-worker Michel envisions the perfect romantic meeting when fate brings two soulmates together. Hotshot divorce lawyer Vincent prefers an all-sex, no-commitment approach to relationships. But when Vincent's latest squeeze, Nathalie, dumps him and Michel finds out that Vincent engineered his "chance encounter" with beautiful blonde Angèle, the two childhood friends realize they'll have to help each other out if they want to find lasting happiness with the women of their dreams.

Lucas, Manu, Philippe, Jacob, and Mario all great friends since they were kids, share the same dream of fame and glory through their increasingly popular rock group called Lust.
But each one of them harbors his own personal aspirations which could jeopardize their future as a group. All this is even more thrown off balance when Laura arrives on the scene.
Bus Palladium
QUOTES Christopher Thompson | DirectorEven if we worked hard on costumes and scenery to give the impression of a recent past, I wanted to avoid a sequenced reconstitution, so I deliberately moved away from those clues that remind one of a precise epoch through objects, voices on the radio, etc... Only a few things are dated, even if one recognized the era. The movie takes place in the 80s, but the characters are mostly 70s in their way of dressing, of making music.

QUOTES Anne Le Ny| DirectorA few years ago, although not directly involved, I watched with amazement as a similar story unfolded in my own family. I couldn’t figure out how my cousins, then adults, could be so affected by the escapades of their elderly father, from whom they had long since moved on. (…) At no time in our lives is it easy to accept a parent’s lack of love.As a spectator, I have a hard time taking seriously the films with no sense of humor. How can one not see the fundamental absurdity of life? The ugly things are usually “ugly and funny”. (...) I, personally, think that my brain works better when I snicker... A question of oxygenation maybe?
Lucien Paumelle has always had strong convictions. A retired doctor, he remains an active man, renowned for his commitment to many humanitarian causes. His commitment even leads him to marry a young Moldavian woman, Tatiana, to save her from being deported.
But very early on, his children, Babette and Arnaud, rapidly realize that their father's behavior seems to no longer reflect the principles he's always advocated. Even at 80 years old could Lucien have succumbed to the charms of his flamboyant wife?
Soon it will be the family relationships that will need to be redefined.

Germain, fifty, and barely literate, and Margueritte, a little old lady, passionate about books, meet in the park when one day he sits down on the same bench as she. Although forty years and 220 pounds separate them, they strike up a friendship. She reads passages from various novels out loud to him, during what becomes their regular meetings, and Germain discovers the magic of the world of books, a world from which he had always felt excluded.
Until then his family circle and his drinking buddies saw him as an idiot, but we soon see those roles reversed! Tragically, Margueritte is losing her sight. It’s out of love for this charming, mischievous and caring grandmother that Germain teaches himself. By reading out loud to her, he not only proves what he is capable of, but he is able to give back to her a little of what she had given to him.

QUOTES Jean Becker | Director
I love making a style of cinema that appears naïve and simple. As my father (film maker Jean Becker) often told me, a good production is one that no one notices. If people are aware of the production, it takes away from the story itself, because one’s focus would be on something other than that which is most important.
My directing consists of giving support to the development of the characters as the plot unfolds, with just one objective: that the spectator leaves the movie theatre “different” from when he came in.

Kim Houang and Michel Boudriau are two French cops who have been blood brothers since they met in an orphanage when they were kids. Michel, brought up a Catholic, constantly integrates those Christian values, such as forgiveness, sharing, and compassion, into his work. Kim, having been adopted at birth by Vietnamese restaurant owners before ending up at the orphanage, retains some of the vestiges of his Asian identity, most notably, an ardent passion for Karaoke.
They might not be the most qualified cops in the country, but, even so, their superior and Chief of the National Police, Aude Letellier, puts them in charge of thwarting a wave of terrorist attacks sweeping across France.
Protéger et servir
”
QUOTES Éric Lavaine | Director
I only realized that “to protect and to serve” was the motto of the American police force after I finished writing the story line of the film. I wanted a title that was the complete opposite of how we see our two heroes, and the full weight of its meaning comes clear when we realize that the film is a comedy.
Protéger et servir is great fun for the moviegoer who is sincerely ready to have a good laugh, for if it can make people laugh, it’s a success. I only make movies that I really want to see.

In the 1880’s Big City, a typical town of the American West, awaits the arrival of a wagon train of new settlers, but when the wagons are attacked by Indians, all the adults hurry to the rescue.
When the children of Big City wake up and realize that they are orphans, and the only adults left are the local drunk and the village idiot, they decide to take action. And so, with the idiot as Sheriff and the drunk as Judge, the kids run the town by taking on their parents’ old jobs: bartender, carpenter, etc… But, trouble is brewing for Big City when the Indian kids decide to make an appearance…
Big City
QUOTES Djamel Bensalah | Director
Big City is an allegory of the world around us. It represents Europe, the river surrounding it represents our Schengen borders [a borderless zone of 25 European countries signed into agreement in June of 1985], and the Indians are all the foreigners knocking at our doors whom we can’t, or won’t welcome.
With kids we quickly had to re-learn how to do our jobs and most importantly, we had to be humble. Everything revolved around them, and although they were extraordinary, professional, and open to work with, we still had to set everything up to insure that they would be at their best when we shot a scene.

She’s a redhead, she’s Scottish, she loves rugby and bagpipes, but she lives in London where she considers herself in exile. She has a passion for scotch whiskey and the Scottish temperament to go with it. Her name is Imogene McCarthery of the McLeod clan. One day in May of 1962, Imogene, secretary to the Admiralty, has committed a minor misdemeanor, humiliating her boss, Sir Woolish, and is consequently summoned to his office. Expecting to be fired, she is instead given a secret mission: to deliver the blueprints for a new aircraft to her home village of Callender in Scotland.

QUOTES Lambert Wilson| ActorWhat attracted me immediately to the story was that zaniness that reminded me of the whimsical humor of the American comedies that I love. Comedies with, for example, Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn, where the woman is sharper by far than the man, who is naïve, slightly ill-at-ease, and clumsy. It’s a difficult balance to strike, but if I had to sum up Imogene in one phrase, I would say that it is: Agatha Christie meets the Pink Panther.

QUOTES Pascal Elbé | Director
How did you go from being an actor and screenwriter to author of your first film?It all started with one event: in Marseille 2006, Mama Galledou, a passenger on a bus, was severely burned by some kids who didn’t seem to have a clue about the consequence of their acts. (…) From then on, I could only think about that incident, but for two months, couldn’t fathom why it consumed me so. As a result, I decided to direct it myself… and all the more so, since, without realizing it, I have often felt frustrated when I was just the screenwriter for a film. I wanted to make my own mistakes!

AWARDS2010 - Montreal - Films of the World’s Festival - Best Director
Pascal Elbé
After growing up in Strasbourg, Pascal Elbé began his acting career on the stage. Along with two friends, he co-wrote two comic plays: Charité bien ordonnée (1992) and Tout baigne (1999), which enjoyed great success at two famous Parisian Cabarets. At the same time he appeared on the screen in Gerard Jugnot’s comedy Fallait pas (1996).
He became a hit in 2003 thanks to the heartwarming comedy, Père et fils, directed by Michel Boujenah, in which he played one of Philippe Noiret’s three sons. Co-starring along with Charles Berling and Bruno Putzulu, he was the big discovery of this film, which he also co-wrote, and was nominated for the “Best Male Newcomer” Cesar award.
He then worked on a succession of comedies and in the same year gave a great performance in the thriller Les Mauvais joueurs (Gamblers). Hearthrob in some roles (Tout pour plaire, 2002, by Cecile Telerman), and best buddy in others (Mes amis, mes amours, 2006), he plays with the image of the handsome man in the gay comedy Comme les autres (2008) where he is Lambert Wilson’s partner.
When he decided to direct his first film, Tête de turc (2009), he gave the lead role to Roschdy Zem, who directed him in Mauvaise foi (Bad Faith, 2006).
