The ‘Hidden’ images are large-scale photographs showing momentous, but often overlooked, events in British history. Red Saunders’ epic photographs celebrate the contributions of ordinary people to improve freedom, equality and human rights, from the Peasants Revolt of 1381 to the Chartist movement of the mid nineteenth century. They show an alternative or ‘hidden’ history, rather than the kings, queens and ‘Great Men’ that dominate official history. The impressively large-scale works are meticulously detailed, atmospherically lit, and historically accurate. Each scene is recreated and posed by volunteer participants in costume, in the style of ‘Tableaux Vivants’, a French phrase meaning ‘living pictures’. The resulting photographs show us historical events that happened before cameras were invented.

We are delighted to welcome the Hidden Art Project into school and the displays will last until 1st July, including 2 workshops for Year 10 Art and Photography students; 10A will have their workshop day on 26th June and 10D on 1st July. The project is a touring exhibition/outreach initiative run by the Impressions Gallery in Bradford and involves images by a photographer called Red Saunders. If you would like to know more visit their website http://hiddenschoolstour.com/.

Please respectfully enjoy these images and find out more about them by looking at them and reading the accompanying text which you will find beside each image. Can you find all 8 images? —locations will be revealed in next week’s in-form. In the mean time go on an artistic wander and see how many paintings you come across...first student to identify all the images and their location will win a prize.

Well done to our inter girls’ team who competed in the Regional B Athletics Final at Thornes Park, Wakefield on Wednesday afternoon.

In total 24 schools in Yorkshire were represented and the girls did exceptionally well to battle through the heat in their individual events (results pending).

They ended the day with a spectacular relay race which was very close, just being pipped on the line for a podium finish! Well done girls.

Year 8 Multi Match 2014—Champions!

Well done to our Year 10 Tour de France Languages team ‘Les Rouleurs Fous’ who are heading to the celebration day at York University on July 3rd. Bonne Chance to Milly Horn (10AJH), Laura King (10FV) , Nathan Spiller (10VEB), Ethan Thompson (10VEB), Catherine Boyle (10ACD), Sarah Yorke (10ALS) and Mrs Kitchen. Allez Allez Allez!

Last Friday we hosted the annual Multi Match fixture against St. Mary's Menston. 77 Year 8 pupils competed in one of ten sports including netball, rugby, cricket and football, all taking place simultaneously. Both schools showed equal enthusiasm and sportsmanship towards the event which resulted in an emphatic 9-1 win to Ilkley. Following last years draw, IGS were determined to regain the trophy which was last held by us in 2012. Each sport was expertly officiated by 25 of Mr Blackwell's Sports’ Leaders’. All of who demonstrated a high level of professionalism and fantastic leadership qualities. The boys team captain, Ben Patchett (8MWC) said, ‘lifting the trophy and having the whole team shouting behind me was incredible.’

Congratulations to our swimmers who took part in the first Wharfedale Schools’ Swimming Gala Tuesday on Tuesday 17th June. The team of students from all year groups headed to Ilkley pool to compete against Prince Henry's and St Mary's. IGS won both the boys’ and girls’ categories and were therefore also overall winners!

The girls’ event was a fiercely contested title and it came down to the final event; the girls swam like their lives depended on it, to win this event and take the overall title. It was a fabulous event and both experienced swimmers and those new to competing took part.

Congratulations to everyone who swam. A special thank you must also go to Karen Graham of Ilkley Swimming Club for organising the pool, time keepers and order of events. A big thank you as well to Miss Smith for coaching and enthusing the team.

Congratulations to all 3 of our rounders teams who made it through to the Bradford League Finals on Wednesday; all teams came out victorious! In hot and sunny conditions, the Year 7,8 and 10 teams faced tough opposition in triangular finals at Hanson School. A brilliant display of skill and flair by all players resulted in a clean sweep of wins. Year 10 beat Buttershaw and St Joseph's, Year 8 beat King's and Dixon's Trinity and Year 7 beat Queensbury and Immanuel, thus taking all 3 trophies. Well done girls!

Well done to our U15A and U13A girls’ tennis team who played in the AEGON match against Bradford Grammar this week. The girls were victorious and beat Bradford Grammar BGS 5-1 with some really good individual performances in the singles matches, particularly from first seed Zoe Judkowski (10VEB) and in the doubles, some impressive net play from Ella Glover (10AJH).

The Year 8s are improving all the time as a team, with some good solid skills now....and even a bit of humour as Darcey Charlesworth's (8JRW) volley 'sat' on top of the net before deciding to drop cleverly onto the opposition's side. At home the girls’ U15B and U13B teams took on Beckfoot, but just lost out in a tie-break shoot-out (U15) and 2-4 in the U13s.

Congratulations to our Year 7 cricketers who played Bradford Grammar School on Monday night. They played fantastically well and ended up winning by 10 wickets BGS 98-9 IGS 104-1. The team are now through to the area finals of the Yorkshire U12 David English Bunbury Cricket Competition and will play Leeds Grammar School. Good luck boys!

Well done to our Year 8 cricketers who played Pudsey Crawshaw on Wednesday. They beat Crawshaw by 10 wickets in the Yorkshire Post Cricket Competition.

Final score Pudsey 60-8 IGS 62-1.

We play Parkside School in the next round and are only two games away from playing at Headingley!

Congratulations to our American Football team who took part in the Yorkshire School American Flag Football festival at Roundhay school on Tuesday.

Our boys did very well scoring more points than any other team in the groups stage but lost closely to the finalists.

The recent coaching form the Leeds Bobcats American football team must have paid off!

Ilkley Grammar School Needs You! Do you know anyone with a story to tell? Did anyone in your family, or anyone you know in Ilkley, fight in World War I, especially in the Battles of Mons, Ypres or the Somme? Were any sent to the trenches, in the Air Force or the Navy (either above or below water)? If so, please let Ilkley Grammar School know in no more than 500 words, by emailing the information to

[email protected]

Please include any photographs, images of medals or newspaper clippings you may have. Photocopies of any old photographs/documentations/letters (not originals) can also be left at Reception at Ilkley Grammar School.

This will help the History Department in its 4 year programme to commemorate the centenary of WWI, to stimulate studies and to trace the service records of Ilkley residents and Ilkley Grammar School Old Boys. The intention is to set up displays around school showing the timeline and details of the war in general, and the role our boys played in the greater picture.

Mr Pancott and Mrs Harrison will be bringing history back to life by following boys from the Grammar School who took part in World War 1. They would welcome any personal stories which anyone could share regarding these ex- students, friends or family members.

Lantra 2014 Careers Competition Now in its second year, Lantra’s Careers Competition encourages students to explore the wealth of careers opportunities in the land-based and environmental industries. It is targeting pupils in years 7 to 13 across the UK. The competition requires students to research a career in the sector and create material to promote it and inspire other young people. What makes the competition particularly appealing is that it allows pupils to use a range of creative mediums to demonstrate their findings. Students are given free reign as to how they present their career of choice, with possible examples including a short documentary film, interview, audio visual presentation, illustrated case study, story board and information pack.

The Careers Competition serves as a great way to introduce young people to the world of work and also provides the opportunity for students to enhance key functional skills, including communication, ICT and problem solving. Great prizes will be on offer for successful students such as a tablet computer, e-reader, digital camera and training vouchers worth £250. The school or college of the winning student will also receive a prize. Interest must be registered by the 1st December 2014. Any student interested should contact Mrs Mitchell in the Key Stage 4 Hub. More information can be found at http://lantra.co.uk/careerscompetition or by emailing [email protected]

Ramadan Many Muslims in the UK welcome Ramadan as a period of fasting and spiritual growth. It is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and starts this year on 29th June. Muslims fast during the daylight hours in the month of Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars (fundamental religious duties) of Islam. It is a time of self-examination and increased religious devotion. It is common to have one meal known as the suhoor just before sunrise and an evening meal iftar after sunset during Ramadan. Please think of our students fasting—it’s particularly challenging at this time of year, just after the longest day and sunset not until 9.20pm. Ramadan is also a time for many Muslims to donate to charity by participating in food drives for the poor, organizing a collection or charity event, and other voluntary activities. People of Islamic faith are also encouraged to read the entire Qur'an during Ramadan. Some recite the entire Qur'an by the end of Ramadan through special prayers known as Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month.
