Once again the time has come for Year 9 to experience the First World War battlefields and cemeteries in our annual trip to Belgium. This year Mrs Lister, Mrs Goodyear, Mr Adams, Mr Faulkner, Mr Denison, Mrs Zaijcek, Mr Boyd and Mr Dickson will take students around the Belgian and French sectors of the Somme and to the Belgian town of Leper, in commemoration of the centenary of the war. On Saturday they will visit Essex Farm Cemetery, St Julian's Canadian War Memorial, Langemark German Cemetery and the “In Flanders Fields” Museum and Exhibition in Leper Town, where the students will interact with history through the exhibition’s extensive collection of wartime memories.

On Sunday, they will head to the largest French cemetery at Notre Dame de Lloret before moving on to the magnificent Vimy Ridge. Next stop is the underground world of Wellington Quarry in Arras and Thiepval Memorial. The group will then attend the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ieper where 5 students will represent IGS in a wreath-laying ceremony. Students will also visit the best chocolate shop in Leper that we're sure the students will thoroughly enjoy!

Sunday will see our return home with a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery full of memories of the battlefields and in remembrance of the thousands who died during the Great War. We're very proud to take our students to Belgium and wish them all the very best for a successful and thought-provoking trip.

Welcome home to our French explorers who spent last week in Coutances with their French exchange families.

The group of 34 students along with Mr Radcliffe, Miss Blane Hernandez, Mrs Kitchen and Mrs Wood headed off on Friday 9th October to Coutances in northern France for a week on our 70th annual French exchange.

The week was spent immersing themselves in French customs and culture and started with an interesting visit to the scenic Mont St Michel.

The first challenge was crossing the bay in quicksand...the second challenge was keeping the bus clean and tidy as they got back on!

On Tuesday, the group tried their hand at sand yachting at Agon-Coutainville and although you need some wind to travel on the sand it was a bit too windy at times! The group then had the chance to try out their French with local traders, with varying degrees of success, as they haggled at the market in Villedieu-les-Poêles, where purchases ranged from live crabs to wooden elephants!

The trip gave our students the opportunity to pay their respects at the WW2 American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, where their maturity and sensitivity was clearly on display. The visit reminded them all that our connection with France goes way beyond our exchange visit. The week finished with a tour of the caramel factory at Isigny-sur-Mer and special thanks go to Rebecca Wenmoth who translated the guided tour.

Our students had a terrific week in France. Well done to all who travelled to Coutances, you were impeccably behaved, fantastic ambassadors for yourselves, your families, Ilkley Grammar School and the UK. Excellent relationships have been formed with your new French "families" and we are sure you are all looking forward to the return leg in March - once you've caught up on your sleep a bit!

Beating the Odds Our Year 11 Presentation Evening (last year’s Year 11) takes place on Wednesday 25th November in the Kings Hall and we are delighted to announce our Guest Speaker. The Year 11 Presentation Evening is such an important night on our school calendar. It is a night to celebrate the amazing success of our students. Paralympian Elizabeth Wright will join us as Guest of Honour. With two Paralympic Games and three Paralympic Medals, including a silver medal in the 400m Freestyle at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, Elizabeth has a phenomenal record of success. In addition to her sporting achievements, she has two university degrees and is now a Goal Journey Coach, author and an inspirational speaker. Given Elizabeth’s remarkable personal success over the years, we are delighted that she will be sharing in the event with us and look forward to hearing her speak, to help inspire our Year 11 of 2015 students to their own next level of triumph!

Year 7 and 8 Onesie Roller Disco Roller disco is coming to IGS! Tickets are £5 per session (including skate hire) and can be bought from your iLeaders in tutor time. There are two sessions: arrive at 5.30pm for session 1 (5.45-6.45pm) or arrive at 6.45pm for session 2 (7-8pm). Check out the RoLA DSCo site for useful information, including videos of the basic skating moves (including how to stop!) www.roladsco.co.uk Full skating guidelines are on the website here www.roladsco.co.uk. The main ones to bear in mind are that: skating is entirely at your own risk protective equipment will be available for you to borrow; please don't bring your own skates - the

hired skates must be used and are included in the price of admission.

‘As a 13 year old I made the decision that I wanted to swim at the Paralympic Games ... the responses I had ranged from laughter to absolute disbelief - but

guess what? I swam at two Paralympic Games and walked away with three medals! At the age of 24 I decided I wanted to go to uni, despite that fact that my grades hadn't been crash hot at school - yes, I went to university and walked away with First Class Honours in my Bachelor Degree and later a Masters in Philosophy!

I believe that we all have the capacity to have the success we want, even if the odds seem against us.‘

iOS 9 If you haven't already done so please install iOS 9 at home over the weekend. Please make sure that your iPad is backed up on iCloud before you run the update, this may mean you may need to clear some space (photos, videos and games are the main offenders) before you run the update. You may also to clear more space for the update itself. Many students apps have stopped working and it's essential that all apps are regularly updated, as well as the OS. Here are just some of the improvements you will see with iOS9.

Multi tasking This update for the iPad has a more advanced part that is just for the iPad Air and helps you to do more than one thing at a time. The simple form of multitasking on the iPad involves opening any app and then swiping inwards from the right-hand side of the screen. You'll see a slim sidebar where you can pick another app, and have it open in that part of the screen while the first app remains visible in the rest.

Virtual Cursor Apple has given iOS 9's system keyboard the ability to move around a document with a virtual cursor. Simply tap and hold anywhere on the screen with two fingers at once, and the keys will all grey out. From now on, moving the two fingers will move the virtual cursor, automatically selecting any text between the original point where you started and the new place you've moved the cursor to.

Shortcut Bar There are shortcuts for common commands now on your keyboard. Depending on the app you're in, the shortcuts will vary, but you'll always get cut (scissors), copy (a square and dotted square) and paste (a solid square and clipboard). If space is tight, however (such as in Notes), these three may be hidden together under a single icon: the scissors. Tap it to reveal the full palette of options. Notes adds shortcuts for formatting options (a capital A and a lower-case a), to-do lists (a tick in a circle) and sketches (a squiggle), both of which we'll discuss in later slides. Other apps may offer a camera icon for adding pictures and videos; a paperclip for adding attachments; bold/italic/underlined letters for more

formatting options; and so on.

Bigger Folders Changes to the OS's folder system now take advantage of the iPad's extra screen space. With iOS 9, iPads will be able to store 105 more apps per folder than in iOS 8. You'll still be granted up to 15 pages in the folder, but on the iPad each page will be laid out in a 4x4 grid instead of 3x3, as it is in iOS 8 ...that's 16 apps per page instead of 9, for a total of 240 apps instead of 135.

Congratulations to Jamie Kidd (9PB) who competed in a demonstration match at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix in Manchester last weekend. Jamie represented ‘Team WLM’, which consisted of 5 taekwondo athletes from Silsden, West Lancashire, Barnsley and Doncaster. Teaming up with his Great Britain team mates from the north of the UK, Jamie displayed his taekwondo skills in a tag team taekwondo sparring match against the UK’s best overall team from the National Championships, ‘Team Gurumu’.

The Grand Prix is an event run by the World Taekwondo Federation and contributes to Olympic qualification for Rio 2016. The top 32 taekwondo athletes from around the world are invited to this prestigious event, held 4 times a year and on a different continent each time. Jamie competed in the tag team match against ‘Team Gurumu’, the score of which ended 45-51 in favour of Team ‘Gurumu’. Each team had 5 competitors, aged between 12 and 14 years of age, and weighed between 35kg to 65kg. Each competitor had a 1-minute round against the nearest sized opponent from the other team, and then a rotating game lasting 5 minutes involving all 5 athletes being subbed one at a time. Points were scored as 1 point for punch, 1 for kick to the body, 3 points for spinning kick to the body or kick to the head, and 4 points for spinning kick to the head – fully in line with Olympic taekwondo scoring. It was a highly entertaining match held at a packed Manchester Arena, and watched online via live stream to 90 countries worldwide.

‘Team WLM’ were certainly the underdogs, with ‘Team Gurumu’ having won the same event in 2013 and 2014. Jamie’s 1 on 1 match was against Ismail Hussain, 14 from London, who this year represented Great Britain at the Cadet European championships and Cadet World Championships. Jamie then went up against Will Tumber, Ilyas Hussain and Mohammed Nour, all from London, in separate bouts, winning exchange on points, despite the size difference in particular with Will Tumber. Well done Jamie!

European Weightlifting Champion Congratulations to Miss Davies (PE) who competed in the European Weightlifting Championships in Klaipeda, Lithuania on 2-11 October 2015. She competed in style, representing Great Britain in the under 23 63kg category. Up against stiff opposition from traditional weightlifting countries for the title, 2 Romanians, a Polish and Georgian lifter, Miss Davies recorded a combination of 88kg snatch lift and 113kg jerk lift, earning her the top spot, the title of European U23 Champion and a gold medal.

Her journey to the European Championships began last summer when she qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in Weightlifting, qualifying after totaling 190kg with an 83kg snatch and 107kg clean and jerk in the English Weightlifting Championships. She came seventh in the 63kg category, which was won by Nigeria's Olauwatoyin Adesanmi with a combined total of 207kg. Miss Davies went on to compete in the English Weightlifting

Championships in February this year and captured her first English Weightlifting title at the Castleford Phoenix Theatre. The Championships were the first major weightlifting competition of the year and Miss Davies was excited to progress on her start to 2015. As well as winning her gold medal Miss Davies also won the title of best female weightlifter across the whole competition which made her number 1 in England.
