The Asian shipbuilding marketOVERVIEW While shipbuilding is growing in countries such as India, Brazil and Russia, China, South Korea and Japan remain at the forefront of the international shipbuilding industry. Song Xinxin, director of the Shanghai-based Ship Engineering Publishing House, gives a brief overview of the current and expected situation for the three market leaders.

In 2010, a total of 2,780 seagoing vessels were ordered worldwide (2009: 1,599), 928 of them in China, 464 in South Ko-

rea and 173 in Japan.

Chinese marketAccording to London-based market re-searcher Clarkson Research, China’s ship-building completions ranked number one in the world from January to July 2011. One reason is that those ships had been ordered in the last few years. Furthermore, the shipbuilding industry in provinces such as Jiangsu and Zhejiang has experi-enced further growth. More than 1,500 shipbuilding companies in China are lo-cated in the coastal provinces of Liaoning, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, etc. Some of the pri-vate shipyards also have reported an ex-pansion of their business. Meanwhile, the state-owned enterprise CSIC (China Ship-building Industry Corporation) has good news, too. The company ranks No. 462 in the 2011 Fortune Global 500 list of top companies, with revenues of USD 21 bil-lion. CSIC is the fi rst comprehensive ship-building enterprise in China to gain a place on the list.

There is also less positive news. Last year’s trend of declining prices for newbuilds has continued this year. Quotations for many ship types in China are lower than last year, and price competition among shipbuilding companies is fi erce. According to Clarkson Research, global new orders in the fi rst half of 2011 decreased by more than 40% com-pared with the same period last year. The situation was even worse for Chinese ship-builders. More than half of them failed to get new orders in the fi rst half of 2011. Looking at the new order list worldwide, it becomes quite obvious that orders for bulk carriers and oil tankers have dropped while those for large container ships and LPG carriers have increased compared with last year. This means that the structure of mar-ket demand is slowly changing. High-tech and high-value-added ships play a leading role in the new order market. This may be why many big shipbuilding companies in China are growing further. The biggest private shipbuilding com-pany, Rongsheng Heavy Industries Group Holdings Ltd, won orders for two plus two 6,600 TEU container ships from a major European shipowner in August 2011. So the group currently has six plus two contracts

for 6,600 TEU container ships in hand. Since the beginning of this year, Rong-sheng has received 30 new orders, 24 of them for bulk carriers and six for container ships. Mr Chen Qiang, CEO of Rongsheng Group, said, “The continued increase of our orders in hand refl ects the strong con-fi dence of shipowners in the group and our good reputation in the industry. This business is forming a solid foundation for the group’s future development. Although the global shipbuilding market remains slow, our business has not been adversely affected, and we are achieving sustained and stable income growth as planned. In the near future, our strong ability to secure new orders should lead the overall indus-try to grow and play a leading role on the international stage. We are moving forward to become a leading heavy industries enter-prise and generate more promising returns for our shareholders and investors.” Sinopacifi c Shipbuilding Group – another private shipbuilding enterprise – organ-ised the delivery and naming ceremony for the Ulstein PX105 Bourbon Front in August 2011. Joined up thinking

A ship is made up of a million decisions, big and small. It’s a complex flow of people, logistics, designs and schedules. Success requires collaboration, and a complete understanding of strategic activities and events.

With AVEVA’s integrated shipbuilding strategy, all project data can be exploited and shared at every stage of the build process, joining up the details to show the big picture. The result is an accurate and efficient project that delivers the right information, material and resources to reduce risk, time and cost. And with brand-new products and modules now offering even more flexibility, production efficiency and customisation, there has never been a better time to upgrade to AVEVA Marine.

With a global sales and service network in more than 40 countries, AVEVA is a leader in engineering design and information management solutions for the shipbuilding and offshore industries.

Choosing AVEVA will be one of the best decisions you ever make.

Sinopacifi c, integrates Ulstein’s latest hull concept X-BOW. The successful fabrica-tion of PX105 is undoubtedly a sign that Sinopacifi c Shipbuilding Group possesses the world’s leading construction technol-ogy for high-value-added offshore sup-port vessels. The state-owned Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co, Ltd (ZPMC) offi cially started construction of its fi rst jack-up drilling rig in July 2011. The jack-up drill-ing rig Zhenhai 1 is the fi rst unit designed and built by ZPMC.With Zhenhai 1, ZPMC has entered the high-tech offshore market. This project is in accordance with “realising the locali-sation breakthrough of offshore equip-ment” proposed in China’s 12th fi ve-year plan. ZPMC will focus in future on the development of offshore equipment as well as other business areas.Other big shipbuilders such as Dalian Ship-building Industry Co, Ltd, Hudong-Zhon-ghua Shipbuilding, etc. are competing to win new orders for LNG carriers and other high-value ships. The small shipyards, on the other hand, are facing the chill of the post-fi nancial crisis era. Mergers, consoli-dation and regrouping are expected to be the hot topics in the Chinese shipbuilding market in the near future.

South Korea and JapanAnother important shipbuilding country in Asia, South Korea, regained its status as the world’s leading shipbuilding na-tion in the fi rst half of this year, taking more than half of the global market in terms of orders measured by weight, as reported by the Korea Shipbuilders’ As-sociation. During the January to June period, the country’s shipyards secured orders for 224 ships, totalling 8.92 million com-pensated gross tons (CGTs), according to South Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The fi gure represents 53.2% of the 16.88 million CGTs worth of orders placed worldwide in the fi rst half of the year 2011. China, the global market leader from 2009 through 2010, won orders for 258 ships during the cited period, but placed behind South Korea in terms of orders measured in CGTs and value. Chinese yards secured orders worth USD 8.8 bil-lion, amounting to 5.17 million CGTs in the six-month period. The orders won by South Korean yards are worth USD 31.4 billion, already reaching over 90% of the USD 34.8 billion the country secured for all of 2010, according to the ministry. In the fi rst half of 2011, South Korean

shipbuilders won orders for all but seven new drill ships in the world, along with the only orders for two fl oating produc-tion, storage and offl oading (FPSO) ves-sels and two LNG-fl oating storage and regasifi cation units (LNG-FSRU). Local yards also won orders for 19 new LNG carriers. “The country secured orders for 69 con-tainer ships in the fi rst half of the year, each with a loading capacity of over 8,000 20-foot equivalent units. That accounted for 75% of all orders in the world for container ships of the same capacity and 65% of orders for all con-tainer ships in the fi rst six months of the year,” the ministry said.Japan’s shipbuilding industry was not directly infl uenced by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, but the entire economic sit-uation and supply industry is having a negative impact on the shipbuilding in-dustry. It will take a long time for Japan to recover from this disaster.China, South Korea and Japan are defi -nitely the most important shipbuilding countries in Asia as well as in the world. South Korea’s and Japan’s shipbuilders have a relatively clear orientation. In China, the shipbuilding market is ex-pected to change in the near future.
