PREFACE

It was my privilege to read the poems, herewith published, whilethe whole world was denouncing Russia for the atrocities in Kishi

nev. The poem \V KWJS June 4, 1902, „The Burden Concerning the

Nation of Ivan The Terrible^, and the phrase T*?P BTB1 IHSK"'DnUin 1p*>-T' „Japan and China Will Draw Their Swords AgainstThee", impressed me as a prophecy rather than a poem. As national

poet, as the author of the Hatikvah and as one who has seen Israel

in the Diaspora throughout three continents, it is but natural that

Mr. Imber should give expression to the feelings, hopes and aspi

rations of his people. The poems written as they are in the language

of Isaiah, read like the prophecies of Isaiah, and I have no doubt

the coming generations will look upon them as such. The idioms

and the phrases are not mere rejoicing over the downfall of an

enemy, but the well known prophetic phrase ',*! "|J2X J13 Thus hath

said The Lord 13 DTK QV DTlp '3 ubi~\ Bl&n npb D'TOl Dp3 ,(?

Imber as poet and prophet.

A good steak is better than empty praise.

A loving, living smile is better than a gilded epitaph.

Naphtali Herz Imber.

Thus our own Imber, erratic meteor on the firmament of

literature, sublime genius, and lover of good red wine, author

of that wonderful pastoral, homecoming song, or triumphant

warrior's, march the „Hatikvah" (it depends upon how yousing it, and how you feel when you sing it) delivers himseli

anent his latest volume of poems, which he has dedicated to

the Mikado whom he adresses as „Avenger of Our Blood in

Kishineff*.

Singularly enough, or not singular at all, if one knowsImber, this, the third volume of his poems, is written on the

third continent of his sojourn. Since there are still three con

tinents which have yet to enjoy the bliss of being trodden

upon by Imber, there is a possibility that he may yet write

three more volumes, six in all— if his pbisical system, all too

weak now, from the rough treatment to which he has sub

jected it, does not fall to pieces meanwhile.

His first volume containing the „Hatikvah", immortal

itself, and winning a reluctant immortality for Imber, waswritten in Asia, and the second in Europe

In bis latest volume Imber appears in the role of prophet, feeling confident that he will not be classed with the others

who have assumed to prophecy since the Destruction of the

Temple. He hurls invective and warnings against Russia andprophecies her downfall.

If Imber were only not Imber, worst enemy of Imber, what a great man Imber would be. Still, he is our Imber,

and we hope that our Imber's third volume of poems will bringhim enough material profit to buy him a little more comfort, than its his now.

His Majesty, the Mikado of Japan: .

Your Majesty—The horrors of Kishineff, which took place a yea:before the outbreak of the present war, has inspired me to prophesy th<

punishment of the Russians in the victory of your Majesty's arms.

There was another inspiration—the poem which your Majesty haspublished in three stanzas, which has inspired me to render them int(

the sacred language of the oldest nation of the world—the Hebrews.I lay before the throne of your Majesty this poem, with the closing

words that our hope Is not yet forlorn.

Your Majesty's faithful servant,

TO IWAN THE TERRIBLE.

Translated by the Auihor.

Published in the "Jewish World"

of New York, tba 4th of June,1903,

just a year before the outbreakof

the Russo.Japanese War.

A PROPHECY.

Remember the centuries goneby,

Iwan thou terrible andwild,

When thy sires worshipped idols,

Made of brass and of clay,

And Rurik was then a child?

Remember the days and years of

old,

When Chazar's King with sword,

Led the Jewish goldenhorde,

Putting his foot upon thy head bold?

Thou waxest fat and kickest,

In blindness thy eyes sunk,

Thou gavest to sword and fire

The Jews of thine Empire.

From their blood you got drunk.

Therefore, so speaks tire Lord

Zebuoth,

I will rise, and the Trumpet will

sound.

Thy own people will rebel. They will ring "Liberty's Bell."

Thy throne will be smashed to the

ground.

Will invite a nation from a land so

far.

Foreign to thee is his tongue,

His legions all fierce and braves,

Will come upon thee as stormy

waves,

To avenge for my people the wrong.

I called my warriors in battle array.

Pride of my legions inspired by wrath.Thy fortress will be crashed,

Thy stronghold will be smashed,

They will march on the victorious

path.

I the Lord before them will go,

Will lead to victory all my braves,

Israel will tell in song,

ON TO WAR.

Translated by the Autor.

Harken ye nations, to me give ear,

So speaks the Lord of Host, and vows,

My people I will console with cheer,

And my enemy will strike terrific blows.

Tell ye the tidings to nations proclaim,

How Ivan the Terrible fell.

Revenge for KIshenef's erime,

To all tongues the tidings tell.

In the blood of my people he washed his feet,

Murdering their infants and child.

Now he will suffer defeat,

And from high mountains will flee wild.

From sunrise the Eagle I did invite

My men in counsel from land of afar.

I called Japan, Ivan to smite

In battle, and crash him in war.

Upon Iva'n they will cast their swords

In camp "Victoria" they will greet.

They will scatter Russia'si hords

And sink into the depths Romanoff's fleet.

Gather ye heroes—in battle array,No mercy—cast them off.

They will flee, their arms down will lay,

The various warriors of Romanoff.

I, the Lord, will go before thee,

W!il ldrive they enemies yonder.

In seven roads they will flee,

With my revenge sword, will do wonder.

Shall it be known to nation* and tongue,

That I turned the tide.

I revenged "Kishenews" wrong,

To Zion will give, the sword of my pride.

MY CONFESSION.

(Written before my operation on

blood poison in St. Louis.)

1.

When my day will come

To wander in distress.

The priest shall call to my home

My sins to confess.

2.

The crimes I have committed

With deliberation

By the Lord will be omitted.

Who promised us salvation.

3.i.i

The sins I have done,

Not conscious of the action,

They have past and gone

Without satisfaction.

4.

Before me the green table,

The gamblers hullo aloud,

And I am sick, not able

To mix up with the crowd.

There are still handsome maidens

Whose lips I have not pressed;

There are still beautiful flowers

Which I did not caress.

That this has ray heart affected.

It is full of remorse;

That I have of late neglected

The girl and the rose.

From father's bouse driven,

And thou, priest, good and mild.Speak out the wowi "forgiven."

POEMS BY MUTSUHITO, EMPEROR

OP JAPAN.

From The Independent.

I.

My heart's at peace with all, and fain

would I

Live, as I love, in lifelong amity;

And yet the storm clouds lower, the

rising wind

Stirs up the waves; the elemental

strife

Rages around. I do not understand

Why this should be.

n.

'Tis surely not our fault:

We've sought to be sincere in deed

and word;

We have exhausted every means to

press

A clear and truthful case, but all invain.

Now may the God that sees' the hearts

of men

Approve of what we do!

III.

They're at the front,

Our brave young men; and now the

middle.aged

Are shouldering their arms; and in

the fields

The old men gather in the abundant

rice,

Low stooping o'er the sheaves; all

ages vie

In cheerful self.devotion to the land.

HATIKVAH.

(Translated by H. S., in the Jewish Chronicle, Dec. 18, 1903.)

"Hatikvah" may fairly claim to have been raised by the Zionist partyto the dignity of a national hymn. It is sung at all Zionist assemblies andits popularity has surpassed any expectations in this regard its authormight have had of it. It is set to a melody that has in it something of the"haunting sadness of the centuries." The English version, which we nowappend, preserves the rhythm and the rhyming scheme of the original.

O while within a Jewish breast

Beats true a Jewish heart,

And Jewish glances turning East,

To Zion fondly dart,—O then our Hope—it is not dead,Our ancient Hope and true,

Again the sacred soil to tread

Where David's banners flew!

O while the tears flow down apace,

And fall like bounteous rain;

And to the father's resting place

Sweeps on the mournful train,—

O then our Hope, etc.

And while upon our eager eye

Flashes the City's wall,

And for the wasted Sanctuary,

The tear.drops trembling fall,—

O, then our Hope, etc.

O while the Jordan's pent.up tide

Leaps downward rapidly,

And while its gleaming waters glide,

Through Galilee's blue sea,—

O, then our Hope, etc.

And while upon the Highway there,

Lowers the stricken Gate,

O while the pure floods of her eyes

And Zion's Daughter doth arise

O, then our Hope, etc.

THE WATCH ON THE JORDAN.

Translated by Israel Zangwill.

I.

Like the crash of the thunder

Which splitteth asunder

The flame of the cloud,

On our ears ever falling

A voice is heard calling

From Zion aloud:

"Let your spirits'" desires

For the land of your sires,

Eternally burn.

From the foe to deliver,

Our own holy river,

To Jordan return.

Where the soft flowing stream

Murmurs low as in dream,

There set we our watch.

For we rest not, but stand,

Off shaken our sloth.

When the bolts of war rattle

To shirk not the battle,

Thine ensign unfurled.

And in pride of our race,

We will fearlessly face,

MY PRAYER TO THE TAILOR.

Motto: Thou changed them as

clothes, and they are changed.

(Psalm.)

When my soul Is sunken

In World's mystery.

She is God arunKen,

Prom the cup of poetry,

And gets a new wing.

By the cup or inspiration

Reaches the highest elevation,

Prom the same did drink.

I look below and above,

Without me and within,

The master with love,

Working at his machine,

Where at it pauseless, he spends.

With thread of light blending,

Old garments is mending.

Time and space is spending,

Where time and space rents.

The old body—rot in the grave,To Master Tailor Is brought

From destruction to be safe,

From It a.new to be -wrought,

To mend it through and through.

By the Master's skill,

By His divine will, j

The machine working still, I

Is turned out anew.

Great Tailor, Thy praises I sing.

See my body is bent.

My old coat to Thee, I bring,

By Thee to be mend,

To old age is due.

From tooth of time torn, : t

From old age outworn,

From its symetric shorn.

Please make from it anew.

Chicago, May 8, 1904.
