THE OLYMPIC TRUCE
"One shouldn't be afraid to lose; this is sport. One day you win;
another day you lose. Of course, everyone wants to be the best. This is normal. This is what sport is about. This is why
I love it."
The rebirth of an ancient tradition
SOMETHING ABOUTOLYMPIC TRUCE
A truce (in Greek, ekecheiria, which literally means "holding
of hands") was announced before and during each of the
Olympic festivals, to allow visitors to travel safely to Olympia. An inscription
describing the truce was written on a bronze discus
which was displayed at Olympia. During the truce,
wars were suspended, armies were prohibited from entering Elis or threatening the Games,
and legal disputes and the carrying out of death
penalties were forbidden.

ANCIENT OLYMPICS BEFORE 1896The first ancient Olympic Games were
started in Olympia Valley in 1776 B.C. according to some learned persons the natives of Olympia adored Zeus as their god. wrestling took place between the gods and goddesses to have their rights on this earth . This wrestling took place between god Zeus and god Koronos in which god Zeus became the winner . To celebrate the victory, the organization of the games and sports was started. The ancient Olympic games continued for 1000 years approximately . But in 394 A.D. Theodosius , the king of ancient Olympic games. Stadiums were destroyed. But even after that the memory of these games remained in the hearts of the natives just like a burning fire.
RULES FOR COMPETITIONSWhen the Olympic games were organized in 776 B.C. certain rules were framed For competitors of various sports competitions which were engraved on bronze plate. These rules are given below:•The competitor must be only a Greek, completely from a Hellenic raceand must be physically well.•Savages and punished persons were not allowed to participate in these games. •The competitor had to stay in Olympia for one month before thebeginning of Olympic games. They had to take the oath that they had already taken the training for 10 months in their state.•Women were not allowed to participate in competitions and see these games.•For participation in these games, they had to do practice for one month.•Only amateur sportsperson could participate in these games and not the professionals.
AWARDSLess attention was paid to awards in ancient Olympic games . Only food grains and animals were given as a
reward. After that the crown, made of olive leaves, was started to be given to the winners. More stress was laid
down on respect and honor, instead of award, to the players in these games. Statues were also made of the
winners. Poems were also composed in praise of winners and their names were recorded. Even the players used to participate in these games for respect and honor and not
for the sake of awards.
MODERN OLYMPICSAFTER 1896
The credit to start modern Olympic games goes to Baron Perie de Coubertin of France. Having
studied political science he came to know of the national and international problems. He thought
that it can be easily solved through Olympic games. It was his imagination to restart the
ancient Olympic games at world level. A meeting of various countries was called in 1893. Italy, Greece, Sweden and Spain were in favor of
commencing these games whereas rest of the countries opposed it. Again a meeting of 13
countries was held in Paris on 16 June 1894. it was presided over by Coubertin and was resolved that “ sports competition’s should be held every fourth year on the lines of Greek Olympic games and every nation should be invited to participate. He succeeded in enlisting worldwide support and
the first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896 in which only 9 countries
participated.
HISTORY OF OLYMPIC SYMBOLS
MOTTOThe Olympic motto is the
hendiatris Citius, Altius, Fortius , which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger". The motto was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin on the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. De Coubertin borrowed it from his friend Henri Didon who, amongst other things, was an athletics enthusiast. The motto was introduced in 1924 at the Olympic Games in Paris.[1]
FLAGOlympic flag was created in 1913 at the suggestion of Baron de Coubertin. It was first solemnly inaugurated in Paris in June 1914. but it was first hoisted in The Olympic stadium at the Antwerp which were held in 1920. it is made up of white Silk and contains five interlocking r ings in five colors, representing five continents of the World. The colors are blue, black, red , yellow and green which represents the continents America, Africa, Australia, Asia and Europe respectively.
FLAMEThe Olympic Flame or Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. The fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since. According to legend, the torch's flame has been kept burning ever since the first Olympics. In contrast to the Olympic flame proper, the torch relay of modern times which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem at the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympics.
.
AWARDThe ancient Greeks, whose Olympiads can be traced back to 776 B.C., didn't give out medals but rather bestowed olive wreaths upon their victors. The medal tradition began with the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, where winners got silver, seconds got bronze and third place got zip. In the intervening 112 years, the coveted awards have been rectangular, ridged, doughnut-like, gilded and--for the 1972 Sapporo Winter Games--shaped like an amorphous blob. At the 1900 Paris Games, some events forwent medals in favor of prizes: one pole-vault runner-up won an umbrella
OATHThe Olympic Oath is a solemn promise made by one athlete -- as a representative of each of the participating Olympic competitors; and by one judge -- as a representative of each officiating Olympic referee or other official, at the opening ceremonies of each Olympic Games. It was spoken in Chinese at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and in Italian at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. The athlete, from the team of the organizing country, holds a corner of the Olympic Flag while reciting the oath :In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these Olympic Games, respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honour of our teams.
INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE
In July 2000, the International Olympic Committee, in close cooperation with Greece, established the International Olympic Truce Foundation and its operational arm, the International Olympic Truce Centre, with the goal of reviving the ancient tradition of the Olympic Truce. The Olympic Truce Centre is an international non-governmental organization which operates within the framework of the Olympic Movement. Its mission is to promote the Olympic Ideal, to serve peace, friendship and international understanding, and to uphold the Olympic Truce. It promotes a Culture of Peace, through a combination of global and local initiatives, mobilizing leaders, athletes and young people of the world behind the cause of sport and peace. The symbolic seat of the International Olympic Truce Centre is in Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Centre has a liaison office in Lausanne, Switzerland, home of the International Olympic Committee. The executive offices of the International Olympic Truce Centre are in Athens, where the first Games of the modern era were held in 1896.
ACHIEVEMENTSBerlin 1936
Nothing demonstrates the power of sport better than the story of Jesse Owens and Luz Long. The story takes place at the Berlin 1936 Olympic Games.J.C. “Jesse” Owens had already won gold twice in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints. The stadium was filled to capacity as Owens prepared for the long jump. His only real opponent was Germany’s Ludwig “Luz” Long. By the fifth round both men were tied at 7.89 metres, a new Olympic record. With his final jump, Owens cleared 8.06 metres and won gold. Long took silver.Hitler left the stadium in disgust, without acknowledging Owens’ achievement. The two men hugged each other, cheered on wildly by the crowd, and established a bond that lasted for years, transcending war, ideology and racial divide.Owens and Long experienced their own Olympic Truce. They celebrated the peaceful power of Olympism.
Beijing 2008A colorful ceremony inaugurated the Peace and Friendship Wall in the Olympic Village. Hundreds of world personalities, athletes,
officials and visitors used this wall to pledge their support for the Olympic Truce. This wall will be preserved as part of the legacy of the
Olympic Games in the proposed Beijing Olympic Museum.
And this continued…• Sydney – 2000• Athens – 2004• Torino – 2006
• Vancouver – 2010
OLYMPIC IDEALS AND OBJECTIVES• Olympics
Games are remembered
for the Bishop
Pennsylvania’s famous sermon
“the important thing in
Olympics is not to win, but to take part. The important
thing in life is not the
triumph, but struggle. The
essential thing is not to
have conquered but to have fought well.
• To pay attention physical education and sport competition in all countries of the world.• To develop the
personality, character, citizenship qualities and
health among youths.• Formation of good habits among sports-
person so that they could lead a healthy and
prosperous life.• To develop patriotism,
fraternity and peace among sports person and
countries.• Not to have any
discrimination on the basis of caste, religion
and race.
VALUES THROUGH OLYMPIC MOVEMENT
To be specific
Olympic provides
opportunities to
develop friendship
among nations.
The nations, who
have tense
relations , also
come near to one
another.
It provid
es
opportunitie
s to
enhance solidarity
. It
gives a
feeling of
brotherhood and
unity among va
rious
nations. I
t creates
cohesion among th
e
participants a
s
nations.
Fair play is
based on
justice.
There should be justic
e
to everyone.
No favor should be
taken. But in
fact there
is
A big gap between words
and action. Therefore it
can
Be said th
at truce in
this
respect is n
ot so useful.
There will be no
discrimination
on the basis of caste, race
and religion.
But it happened during
1972 Munich Olympics
When 11 players of Israel
were murdered
ruthlessly.
NEGATIVE ASPECTSIt seems that the
dreams Of de Coubertin are not
goingTo be fulfilled. Some of the countries take part
in Olympic games just to prove themselves that
they are on the top and far better than other
countries . It was also a shock to these values
when some countries of the world boycotted
1980 Moscow Olympics and 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Perhaps, de
Coubertin never imagined such events. But it does not mean
that Olympic movement has failed in developing the above –mentioned
values.
THANK YOU..
