Starting at the beginning with Fundamentals of process safety and Fundamentals of process safety (nuclear), moving on into the basics of HAZOP through to leading a team, the technique is covered from beginner to more experienced, to the oil and gas industry and a team leader or team member. Chemical engineering for scientists and other engineers offers those not formally trained in chemical engineering an introduction to some of the main subjects, opportunities to understand the basic concepts and general philosophy with a view to promote improved communication between disciplines.
A new project and course on Carbon calculations over the life cycle of industrial activities (CCaLC) aims to develop a life cycle methodology and tailored for the specific needs of industry and policy makers it has decision-support tools for estimation of CO2 and other greenhouse gases in different industrial sectors along the complete supply chain.

Frequently asked questions
Who presents the courses?
IChemE are in the great position of having highly qualified course directors who will provide the training. They have hands-on experience and may have encountered many of the problems that you may be experiencing. CV’s are available upon request.
How many people can attend?
We recommend that if you have six or more people to train, the most cost-effective route is in-company training.
Where does the training take place?
We will come to you, either at your company’s site, or an external venue of your choice.
How long does it take to organise?
Organisation of a course can be done quickly, but dates are dependent on the course directors availability.
Do I receive a certificate?
Yes, all course attendees receive a certificate of attendance. If you successfully pass the Fundamentals courses assessment a ‘completed’ certificate is issued.
Will there be an end of course assessment?
For the majority of courses there is no end of course assessment. Fundamentals of process safety and Fundamentals of process safety (nuclear) are the exceptions. All courses have exercises/workshops to complete during each day and feedback is given at the time.
What if I want a standard course modifying?
There are several different ways in which we can modify our standard material. All in-company training courses focus on your industry, and we can adapt the programme to allow subject areas of particular interest to be discussed in greater detail. Alternatively we can amalgamate modules from several courses to create a specialised course; or we can create a totally bespoke programme that is unique to your company.
What if I can’t see the training course I need?
IChemE has the knowledge and resourses to be able to create a training solution unique to your company. Contact us with your requirements.
What is included in the cost of the training?
The price covers the presentation of the course, all materials required, and course directors’ time. You will also have the opportunity to ask our experts confidential questions. What every engineer should know about contractsWhen managing projects, whether large or small, a clear understanding of the law of contract is essential. Failure to understand the basics can prove very expensive. This course has been delivered to engineers of various disciplines over many years, and will provide invaluable knowledge and understanding of the law of contract as it applies to engineering projects.

Six stage hazard studies in project managementSix stage hazard studies have shown that they can improve process safety and enhance project performance – giving better financial control, better time management and reduce last minute changes. The system allows critical issues to be identified and resolved early on in the life of a project, reduces reliance on HAZOP at too late a stage in the design, and provides a framework for handling HSE issues in a project.

Safety instrumented systems according to IEC61511
Safety instrumented systems (SIS) are one type of protection layer as identified by a risk analysis (e.g. Layer of protection analysis (LOPA)). IEC61511/ISA 84 has been developed to provide rules and guidance for the implementation of SIS in the process industry sector. It should be noted that this standard is a ‘performance’ type standard which allows many different solutions for instrumented systems in risk control. The course will address alternatives in detail.

Process safety and the board: an executive programme in process safety managementThis one-day event has been developed by the Institution of Chemical Engineers with input from members working across several high hazard industries and from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to help boards in industries with major process hazards to review their understanding of process safety management as a way of keeping their operations safe and of meeting their obligations for the direction of their organisations.

Layer of protection analysis (LOPA)Layer of protection analysis (LOPA) is a semi quantitative tool for analysing and assessing risk on a process plant. It uses an order of magnitude technique to evaluate the adequacy of existing or proposed layers of protection against known hazards. LOPA typically builds on the information developed during a qualitative hazard evaluation, such as a process hazard analysis (PHA), and can be used to meet the risk assessment requirements of IEC 61508 and 61511.
This course covers the basic methodology of LOPA and the detailed stages of its application. Participants are shown how significant scenarios are identified and how frequencies are estimated for the worst-case events. They are shown how to assign risk categories and therefore determine the number of independent protection layers (IPLs) that should be in place. The specification and requirements for a protection layer to be accepted as an IPL are discussed.

IChemE international forms of contractThe IChemE Forms of contract suites are drafted as performance-based contracts for the design and construction of process plants and other output-based projects. Process plants are increasingly spanning national borders, and IChemE’s international suite of contracts reflect the particular needs of international contracting under a wide range of legal systems.
This two-day course examines the suite of international contract forms available (lump sum, cost reimbursable, target cost): their applicability to process plant contracts, their approach to risk and payment, and their structure.
The first day focuses on the duties of the contractor, the various stages of the works, the testing regime, and the role of the project manager, looking at the IChemE International red book.
The second day looks at risk allocation, the difference between price and cost based contracts and the consequent differences in cost liability, and the different payment terms in the three main contract forms – the lump sum International red book, the cost reimbursable International green book and the target cost International burgundy book. Human factors in health and safety
There is an increasing emphasis on the importance of managing ‘human factors’ to achieve improved safety and business performance in the chemical process industries. Major accidents, including those at Texas City and Buncefield, have once again highlighted the importance of addressing this aspect of performance. However, many of the safety and operational professionals charged with managing human factors have no formal qualifications or training in the behavioural sciences. To help address this gap, The Keil Centre and IChemE have organised this 2-year development programme. It builds upon the needs identified in the process industries, namely:
– content covering human factors in process safety, health and safety generally, with links to other aspects of business performance;
– a modular course design, with short residential events spread over time, also providing networking opportunities with like-minded professionals; and
– consultancy skills development to help implement human factors solutions.

IChemE UK forms of contractThe IChemE Forms of contract are drafted as performance-based contracts for the design and construction of process plants and other output-based projects.
This two-day course examines the suite of contract forms for use in the UK: their applicability to process plant contracts, their approach to risk and payment, and their structure.
The first day focuses on the duties of the contractor, the various stages of the works, the testing regime, the role of the project manager, looking at the IChemE Red book.
The second day looks at risk allocation, the difference between price and cost based contracts and the consequent differences in cost liability, and the different payment terms in the lump sum Red book, the cost reimbursable Green book and the target cost Burgundy book. Reference is also made to the Yellow and Brown books (for subcontracts).

Carbon footprinting
Climate change is increasingly recognised as the biggest environmental threat we face, and as such it is also becoming a critical business issue. Organisations of all types and sizes are under an increasing pressure to provide information on their carbon footprint and to demonstrate what they are doing to mitigate the effects of climate change. This IChemE course has been designed to help organisations address these pressures by providing hands-on experience on estimating the carbon footprint of their products.
This course is aimed at understanding the fundamentals for estimating carbon footprints of products, processes and technologies. Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), used to calculate the carbon footprint along supply chains, will be explained and applied in a number of practical case studies and hands-on exercises using a carbon footprinting software tool. The focus will in particular be on the application of the PAS2050 standard for estimating carbon footprints. The advantages and disadvantages of carbon labelling will also be discussed.
Objectives:
The participants can expect to learn about a range of issues related to carbon footprinting, including:

– how to estimate a carbon footprint for business-to business and business-to-consumer communication

A chartered chemical engineer and a Fellow of the IChemE, Adisa is Professor of Sustainable Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester. She is internationally recognised for her work in life cycle assessment and carbon footprinting and has masterminded the CCaLC carbon footprinting tool (www.ccalc.org.uk). She leads a group of 25 researchers at Manchester, working in close collaboration with over 100 companies and other organisations on issues related to sustainable development of industrial systems.
Dr rer.nat. Heinz Stichnothe
Previously at The University of Manchester where he was Coordinator for the CCaLC project, Heinz is based at the Institute for Agricultural Technology and Biosystems Engineering in Germany. He specialises in corporate and product carbon footprinting. Heinz has also been involved in the development of the CCaLC tool.
