Welcome to the extraordinary folk art phenomenon of Barn Quilts!
Evansville, Wisconsin, has about 60 barn quilts in the area, the highest concentration of this unique art form in Rock County. What are barn quilts? They are quilt block patterns painted on wood, usually 2‐foot, 4‐foot or 8‐foot square. The quilt is then displayed on a barn, or in some cases on a residence or business building.
The patterns vary from historical quilt blocks to custom‐designed squares. Owners choose a pattern and colors, and pay a nominal fee to cover materials. Volunteers hand paint the wood in a lengthy process that requires several coats of paint and drying time.
It’s a visual, enchanting way to promote rural heritage, to honor the art of quilting, and to highlight the architecture and history of barns. The American Barn Quilt Movement began in Ohio in 2001, and quickly gained momentum in Wisconsin. In Rock County, extraordinary volunteers organized as a group in 2010, and have painted more than 200 quilts on urban and rural sites. Rock County has more barn quilts than of any other county in the United States.
Evansville itself has numerous residential barn quilts, adding to the community’s charm. Downtown, more folk art in the shape of artistic 6‐foot windmills catch atten‐tion and breezes. Nearby Leonard Leota Park with its pretty lake attracts birds, hikers, picnickers, and more. With national historic districts, Evansville also has a walkable concentration of historic homes in varying architectural styles, including several Victorian “Painted Ladies.”
