You are invited to the 38th Annual NC EAPA March Conference

“Looking for Answers in a Chaotic World”

It’s a conspiracy! This is the 4th year that the conference will be held in beautiful downtown Winston-Salem. The 2017 March Conference will be by-the-book with intentional mayhem thrown in. Between the rogue presentations and the undercover exhibitors -- you will be

exposed to special people who understand the chaos that Employee Assistance Professionals navigate every day. Each presentation is designed to help Employee Assistance Professionals

examine their skills and bust the cold cases. Don’t miss this opportunity to scope out the gum shoes in the Exhibitor Hall on Wednesday and Thursday. Inspector Clouseau? Magnum P.I.?

The NCEAPA Planning Committee would like to thank each of you in advance for attending

and participating in the conference. Without the members of NCEAPA and professionals who attend the conference every year, there would be no annual March Conference. We have worked

hard to recruit exhibitors and select speakers that will give you the resources you need to continue to solve the mysteries. The NCEAPA Conference is one that you will want to make

part of your profile year after year. Whodunit?! Hook up the wiretap. We hope you enjoy the conference!

Sincerely,

Lib Edwards, Chair

Wednesday Plenary Presentation

Dennis Gillan Journey Towards Recovery:

Suicide Prevention & Personal Story

Wednesday, March 8th 1:00 – 2:00 pm Dennis Gillan is an ordinary guy with an extraordinary story of perseverance. After years of remaining silent regarding the suicide deaths of his two brothers eleven years apart, Dennis has been stepping out and sharing his story and the response has been incredible. Dennis will touch on the role counseling played in his life, the need to be sober at times of stress and beyond, how he got back on his feet one day at a time, and yes there will be times when the audience laughs! Examining: •Wrong way to handle a loss to suicide—his reaction to loss of older brother. •Better way to handle a loss to suicide—his reaction to loss of younger brother •How Dennis got sober and the BENEFITS thereof! •Warning signs that someone may be thinking about suicide. •His work on the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. •Services available to the audience he is speaking to!

2:15 – 3:45 Dennis Gillan (continued)

Question Persuade Refer In this session Dennis will review the content from the QPR institute in a program called QPR, Question Persuade Refer. Your Boss is NOT Your Mother: Team Relationships with Keith McDaniel

Relationships at work, just as in other settings, can create stress and promote low productivity. Left

unaddressed, this this can be counterproductive to both our individual health and the health of the

organization. This workshop helps participants determine the origin of stress in relationships,

identify nonproductive behavior, and create positive and responsible ways for handling difficult

situations.

Keith McDaniel, M.Div, LEAP is an EAP counselor with First Health of the Carolinas. He has

been a counselor for over 30 years. He specializes in Men’s Issues, couples therapy, and grief

counseling. He has conducted workshops on a variety of topics nationally and internationally.

Video Counseling Do’s and Don’ts with Christine McDonald

Video counseling is a rapidly growing field that is increasing in popularity among clients. There is very strong evidence that it is just as effective as face to face therapy, and in some cases more effective. Stigma is reduced as clients can access it from the comfort of their own home. While there are many benefits to using video counseling, there are many risks. Clinicians need to educate themselves before offering this service and be aware of both the legal and ethical considerations. There are also issues of confidentiality and security that many in the field are not aware of. Many clients may be hesitant to engage in this service, it is essential that Clinicians be skilled in introducing it to clients. In this presentation, participants will learn about video counseling and the do’s and don’ts before getting started. Participants will also learn about the future of telemental health in EAP counseling

Chris McDonald is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPCS), a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and is a Distanced Credentialed Counselor (DCC). She has over 20 years of experience as a Counselor. She has worked in the schools, community, agencies and now is in private practice. She currently provides EAP counseling through video technology. She has used video, email, message board counseling for 3 years. She is a holistic provider and specializes in treatment of teens and adults with depression, anxiety and trauma. She is also a clinical supervisor and provides supervision to initially licensed LPCA’s.

With the right opportunities and proper support, adults can be successful in a variety of positions.
