Born in Fife in 1951, Jack Vettriano has emergedfrom the unlikely background of an early workinglife in the Scottish coalfields to become one ofBritain's best known contemporary artists; he isentirely self-taught. His work first came to publicprominence at the Royal Scottish Academy openexhibition in 1988. Since then there have beensell-out exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and New York.

In 2003, Jack Vettriano was awarded an HonoraryDoctorate from St Andrew's University and anOBE for Services to the Visual Arts. In April 2004,his painting The Singing Butler was sold atSotheby's for in excess of £700,000 a recordbreaking price for a painting by a Scottish artist.

Vettriano's most recent exhibition with London’sPortland Gallery, Love, Devotion and Surrender,was in April 2006.

A Collection of images from this importantevent is available to collectors and is illustrated inthis magazine.

A striking example of modern male success, James is

talented, innovative and competitive, with that traditional

masculine weakness for the sexier things in life – particularly

fast cars. His images contrast the myriad greys of sidewalks

and skyscrapers with occasional ventures towards the bolder

end of the spectrum. To achieve this distinctive look, James

approached a bespoke pastel manufacturer and had over 50

different shades of grey individually created ranging from

oyster to ash, from iron to dove, from seawashed pebbles to

cloudy skies. These allow him to describe every nuance of

concrete, smoke and sky to stunning effect with minimal use

of the more conventional range of colours, a stylistic

achievement which has won him a unique place on the

contemporary art market.

Sherree enjoys a formidable reputation in the fine art world, so to celebrate both this anniversary

and her 50th birthday, DeMontfort Fine Art will be releasing ‘First Impressions’ in Spring. This

beautiful retrospective will take us on a guided tour of Sherree’s remarkable career as the face of

Modern British Impressionism and with images ranging from society scenes to formal portraits it

will demonstrate the wide ranging subject matter of this internationally-acclaimed artistic force.

was particularly memorable. It seemed strange in a way

to be creating an impression of someone who is used to

painting his own pictures of celebrities in words, but he was,

of course, utterly charming.

As such they should reflect and support our personalities,

and one fascinating way to ensure that this happens is to pay

attention to the psychology of colour. The colours of our

environment affect our behaviour and mood: when yellow

daffodils appear we begin to feel livelier, whereas a grey

office carpet can make us feel decidedly lacklustre.

One simple but effective way to introduce the perfect

colours into our homes is through a painting, and the work

of Jonathan Shaw provides an inspirational starting point. His

breathtaking images use the convergence of sea and sky as

an opportunity to explore the expressive possibilities of the

spectrum; so whether we crave the cool serenity of azure

blues, the stimulation of strong, passionate reds or the

contemplative qualities of lilac, Jonathan presents us with the

ultimate choice of palette.

Simon Bull who lives in California, has been a huge international talent for over two decades.His artistic inspiration comes largely from his poetic response to the world which he conveys via an extraordinary vocabulary of colour, form and texture.

Harry Brioche Born and brought up in the Seychelles, Harry found himself entranced by the “moody” skies he found within the UK. His new oilpaintings portray beautifully lit scenes of the British countryside, which he describes as "lighting the landscape".

John Milan lived for a time in the beautiful Mediterranean coastal city of Kavala in Greece, and it is this experience that has influenced his distinctivepalette. His fascinating abstract images contrast dense areas of tonal layering with a more ethereal range of luminous whites and ochres.

Peter Wileman VPROI This multi award-winning artist’s new collection of originals is characterised by vigorous brushstrokes and a dramatic air ofspontaneity, enhancing his already enviable reputation as a master of observation and execution.

Emilija Pasagic was born in the former

Yugoslavia but moved to Canada in the

1990s. Her unconventional style uses a

blend of bee’s wax and oil paints combining

an exotic, modernistic approach with an

ancient technique.
