The Great Tri- State Tornado of Wednesday, March 18, 1925 was the deadliest tornado in U.S. history. It registered a 5 on the Fujita scale and killed 695 people in Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. On January 23, 1556 in Shaanxi, China an extremely large earthquake caused unbelievable destruction. It is estimated that over 830,000 people lost their lives in this tragic event. In 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted violently, killing approximately 92,000 people. Around 15,000 were killed in the initial blast- the rest died of starvation due to crop and livestock failures that resulted from the climate changes caused by the eruption. On December 26, 2004, an undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered huge tsunamis which made landfall near Sumatra, Indonesia. It is estimated that 283,000 people were killed. No warning system was in place.
