CLASART CONTINUES BRUCKNER CYCLE WITH THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA AND

FRANZ WELSER-MÖST

"It seems there's no composer Franz Welser-Möst cares about more than Bruckner. […] At every moment, all one sensed

from conductor and orchestra were respect and affection for the score."

(The Plain Dealer).

THE EIGHTH SYMPHONY – A MONUMENT CARVED FROM MUSICAL TONES

Considered by Anton Bruckner as the artistic climax of his career, the Symphony No. 8 followed in the wake of the triumphs

celebrated by his 7th Symphony and Te Deum. Yet the conductor put aside the original version of the work – which Franz

Welser-Möst conducts here – when his friend the conductor Hermann Levi rejected it. The original version was first

performed in 1954 and first published in 1972. Recorded live at Cleveland's Severance Hall with the Cleveland Orchestra

under its Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, this performance marks the fourth installment in the orchestra's Bruckner

cycle, which is being captured for posterity on DVD by Clasart. While the Fifth was recorded at the Baroque monastery of

St. Florian near Linz, Austria, and the Ninth in Vienna's Musikverein, the Seventh and the Eighth were recorded in Cleveland.

Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst has been Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra since 2002, and has extended

his contract to 2018, the orchestra's 100th season. In addition to his duties in Cleveland, Welser-Möst has been General

Music Director of the Vienna State Opera since September 2010.

THE MET CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF JAMES LEVINE’S COMPANY DEBUT

The Metropolitan Opera celebrates the 40th anniversary of James Levine’s company debut with James Levine:

Celebrating 40 Years at the Met, two special boxed sets of 21 DVDs and 32 CDs featuring highlights from the

longtime Music Director’s record-breaking career with the company. The two sets contain 22 complete

performances, 19 of which have never been previously available in any format. All titles have been digitally

remastered in state-of-the-art sound.

The 21-DVD set features 11 complete operas including such star-studded performances as Smetana’s The Bartered

Bride from 1978 with Teresa Stratas, Nicolai Gedda, Jon Vickers, and Martti Talvela, and Der Rosenkavalier from

1982 with Kiri Te Kanawa, Tatiana Troyanos, Judith Blegen, Luciano Pavarotti, and Kurt Moll.

The DVDs also include highlights from historic concerts in 1982 and 1983 featuring five legendary names, Leontyne

Price, Marilyn Horne, Tatiana Troyanos, Plácido Domingo, and Sherrill Milnes. The 11 historic performances on the

32-CD set range from early 1980s innovations like the Parade triple-bill to the world premiere of John Harbison’s

The Great Gatsby from 2000. All audio recordings are from live radio broadcasts.

The complete collection will be available at the Met Opera Shop, its online store www.metoperashop.org, and

Amazon.com on Tuesday, 21 September.

James Levine made his Metropolitan Opera debut on 5

June 1971 conducting Puccini’s Tosca and has since led

more performances at the Met than any other

conductor in the company’s history, nearly 2,500 in all.

In honor of his 40th anniversary with the company, the

Met will also produce a documentary film and a book,

among other tributes.

ACCENTUS MUSIC

Proudly presents…

In coproduction with SF and ARTE / 18 September 2010 / KKL Lucerne:

The Closing Gala Concert – Live from the Lucerne Festival: Gustavo Dudamel and the Vienna

Philharmonic will frame their concluding concert with the sound of drums: a drum roll and an

insistent rhythm, respectively. Rossini’s fizzy Overture to The Thieving Magpie begins with a

snare drum solo, while Ravel’s famous Boléro is based on a metrical pattern played unrelentingly

by this instrument, which builds into a flagrantly erotic wave of energy. With these two pieces as

pillars, the concert will also include Cuban composer Julián Orbón’s Versiones Sinfónicas, which

pays homage to three different sound worlds: the Spanish dance of the pavane, medieval

processional song, and Afro-Caribbean music. Rhythmic drive also plays a key role in Leonard

Bernstein’s Divertimento, composed in 1980 for the centennial of the Boston Symphony

Orchestra and combining such dances as the waltz, mazurka, and samba, as well as the blues.

(Text: Lucerne Festival)

Furthermore, ACCENTUS Music is delighted to announce that the Mitteldeutsche

Medienförderung (MDM, an arts funding body) has agreed to fund the development of three

large music documentaries and a documentary series. Among them an exclusive documentary

about the Thomanerchor (St Thomas Choir) Leipzig, which will be

arriving in cinemas in March 2012, just in time to celebrate the

choir's 800-year anniversary.

INTERDISCIPLINARY GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN

SCREENDANCE

As both a practice and an area of theoretical discourse, Screendance is burgeoning worldwide

as evidenced by the proliferation of Screendance festivals, symposia, conferences and

publications. Also known as dance for camera, cine dance, and video dance, this hybrid form,

which in the past has been found at the margins of practice in the fields of dance and film, is

now taking a central place as an independent art form. Through the advocacy of practitioners

and scholars worldwide, the field of Screendance is articulating its richly intertwined art-

historical roots as a means to understand present dance, film, digital media and art practices

and how they intersect in a complex discourse of ideas about the body on screen. The

certificate has been designed to meet the growing demand of dancers, choreographers,

filmmakers and artists who are seeking a more in-depth experience in exploring the

relationship between the moving body and the frame.

The Graduate Certificate in Screendance at the University of Utah is an interdisciplinary

collaboration between the Department of Modern Dance and the Department of Film &

Media Arts. This programme provides professional level production courses with state-of-the-

RELATED INDUSTRY NEWSart equipment, movement and theory classes and the option for Certification in

Final Cut Pro. The Certificate requires a two-semester on-site commitment.
