What is IMU’sMedicine ProgrammeAbout?
OVERVIEW
The IMU Medicine programme consists of two phases: Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences.
The first phase, Medical Sciences, is 2½ years and takes place at the University’s campus in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. Thereafter, students in the IMU MBBS Programme continues with the second phase, Clinical Sciences, at the Clinical Campus in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan for 2 years before completing the final 6 months at the Clinical Campuses in Kluang or Batu Pahat, Johor. Students opting for the Partner Medical School (PMS) programme will continue the Clinical Sciences at the respective PMS overseas for another 2 to 3½ years depending on the PMS.
The IMU Medicine Programme aims to produce graduates who meet the demands of rapidly evolving healthcare systems and be able to advocate changes for improvement via emphasis on their development of skills, behaviours and attitudes. The curriculum is developed based on the philosophy to promote "Person-centre Care with Humanistic Values". In order to achieve the goals, they should be medical professionals with these attributes: personally competent, life-long learner, transformative leader, empathetic, compassionate and responsive and adaptive.
The medicine programme is an outcome-based curriculum with an integrated system-based approach using ‘Key Clinical Problems’ (KCP) as theme, utilising a variety of pedagogical approaches that include lectures, problem-based learning, case-based learning, team-based learning, Meet-the-Expert
session, task-based learning, practical classes, structured independent online learning in the form of Highly Essential Learning Package (HELP), clinical skills sessions, clinical simulation training and clinical experiential learning in real clinical practice. Blended (physical and online) learning with the support of technology and learning management system is adapted for this programme.

ASSESSMENTThe assessment strategies are based on sound educational principles which encompass both ‘Assessment for Learning’ to improve performance and ‘Assessment of Learning’ to ascertain minimum competencies achieved.
A variety of assessment methods are employed in the medical curriculum to assess the learning outcomes via the provision of direct immediate feedback and summative tests which include: One Best Answers (OBA), Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), Modified Essay Questions (MEQ), Structured Essay Questions (SEQ), Extended Matching Questions (EMQ).
The work-based assessment emphasises on tracking student’s progress during the period of clinical training and capturing weak performing students based on self- assessment, supervisor's on-site report and mentor’s evaluation (multisource feedback including from peer and patient’s feedback), reflective sessions with supervisors and reflective writings.
Students with excellent performance academically or professionally will receive recognition and be rewarded with a variety of awards.
Online Assessment System (OAS)
The Online Assessment System OAS has been utilised by the Medicine programme since 2017. Nearly all assessments; formative or summative are made available to the stakeholders via the system to allow attainment of immediate feedback on test questions and performance.
Clinical Learning And Training
Experiential learning occurs in the real clinical settings or simulation. Students are exposed to incremental clinical experiential learning from Year 1 with opportunities to experience, participate and evaluate the full spectrum of care from primary to tertiary prevention. The early exposure emphasizes the importance of clinical application of basic science, focusing on wellness and disease prevention and helps to stimulate students’ interest in Medicine.
Clinical exposure to patients starts as early as Semester 1 and throughout the programme in Semesters 2, 3 and 4. In Semester 5, students will undergo the transition to clinical practice where they will spend 10 weeks in clinical electives locally or internationally, and in hospital attachment.
In the clinical years from Semester 6 to 10, students are posted to the full range of major medical and surgical specialties. Clinical and hospital postings are conducted in hospitals and health clinics including:
• Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban, Negeri Sembilan• Hospital Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan• Hospital Tuanku Najihah Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan• Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Kluang, Johor• Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail Batu Pahat, Johor• Hospital Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor• Hospital Orang Asli, Gombak, Selangor• Hospital Jempol, Negeri Sembilan• Several health clinics in Negeri Sembilan and Klang Valley Semester 10 students undergo their 6 months of Senior Clerkship at Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail Batu Pahat or Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Kluang. During this semester, students work in wards as shadow house officers under the supervision of senior clinicians, in order to prepare them for their housemanship. This is important for the students as they will be provided the opportunity of hands-on incremental responsibility for patient management.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENTThere will be opportunities under special study courses for students to discover their skills and talents in other aspects of healthcare industry and its related technology. Students will also be involved in research and innovation and encouraged to enhance their professional and personal development via internship programmes locally or internationally as well as extra-curricular activities in humanities, entrepreneurship and community service.
LEARNING RESOURCES AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIESThe student’s self-directed learning is supported by multiple learning resources including AMBOSS where free access to this supplementary learning site is given.
From August 2017, IMU has incorporated the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Preparatory Course into the IMU medical curriculum across Semesters 1 to 10. This allows IMU medical graduates to prepare early for the USMLE leading to potential career opportunities in the United States of America. In addition, students will be given opportunities for clinical electives in selected hospitals in the USA to broaden their learning experience in different healthcare systems.
RECOGNITION OF DEGREEThe IMU awards the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree - MBBS (IMU) - to students upon completion of the IMU 5-year Medicine programme. This degree is recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
The degree is also recognised by:• Sri Lanka Medical Council • Maldives Medical and Dental Council • The Medical Council of Thailand
The degree is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
The School of Medicine was granted 5-year accreditation (2021-2025) from Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for its medicine programme in 2020.
CAREER PATHWAYMedicine offers a vast variety of career choices. Most doctors treat patients full-time, while others also teach, conduct research, manage hospitals and clinics, or develop healthcare policy.
A doctor can work in private hospitals, or start a private practice, either with the basic degree, or after specialisation. A doctor may also choose to remain working with the Government. Doctors can join an academic institution, teach or do research. Doctors can combine medical knowledge and IT skills to develop e-learning modules: the future of medical education.
Medicine has diversified. Increasingly the focus is on preventive healthcare and the management of chronic diseases and ageing population. These are also the areas that many doctors serve.
