Sunrise explores the concepts of free will, autonomy, and interconnections. The work lives halfway between improvisation and set choreography, planned and unplanned moments, as well as individual and collective choices.

I would like to thank the dancers for their generous contribution during the creative process, and Patricia Fraser for the wonderful opportunity. - LL-C

Individuality and immediacy are key to this piece. The third years are one of the most creative and deeply individual classes I’ve ever worked with. I wanted to highlight their uniqueness, physical explosiveness, and versatility, along with their ability to maintain a profound relationship with their community. We investigated the possibility of how a moment of time can have a profound impact on our lives and the lives of those around us.

Thank you: I have been so inspired by these unbelievable dancers. Their creative spirits and vibrancy have taken M&D to another dimension. Their talents, insight, and breath have deepened and elevated the fierceness and beauty of the work. Thanks also for the Kathryn Ash Choreographic Commission Award, and to Patricia Fraser, the staff and crew of the School, and Karen, Aniya, and Mika Kaeja. - AK

“Our skin mediates some of the most important transactions of our lives. The skin (as a tissue) is key to our biology, our sensory experiences, our information gathering, and our relationships with others.” - Nina G. Jablonski

When I first met this group of young artists, I was immediately inspired by how diverse and unique they all are. How do we celebrate this and find harmony? This work is dedicated to them. Additional thanks to Paul Charbonneau and James Cooke. This work is in celebration of Pete Steele’s life. - DT

Her temper is both fuel and fog.Bares the weight and fire only of the fights not handled. The price-tag for a mission with heavy terms and conditions.Undomesticated, she stands poised or confused but never sedated.

My version of having a good time is creating work with people that are willing to jump head first. Through the laughs and the headaches, this one summed up to a real creative ride. I applaud the way the team at the School teach these dancers to come at every rehearsal open minded and ready to deliver. Patricia Fraser and the School of TDT team, nothing but respect for the vote of confidence and for another opportunity to play, grow, and push a solid bunch of artists.- OS

This is the first time La Valse has been restaged outside the Danny Grossman Dance Company. In order to do so, the School has reconstructed the costumes using the originals from the Dance Collection Danse archives as a guide. You can see some original pieces from the DCD collection in the lobby. The recreation process is expensive and time consuming – please consider contributing towards the cost of returning this seminal work to the stage at schooloftdt.org/donate/donate-today – thank you!
