We are thrilled to be able to welcome Professor Gillian Triggs President of the Australian Human Rights Commission as a Keynote Speaker at the ConferenceEmeritus Professor Gillian Triggs is the President of WKH$XVWUDOLDQ+XPDQ5LJKWVampRPPLVVLRQZLWKDAgraveYHyear appointment She was Dean of the Faculty of Law and Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney from 2007-12 and Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law from 2005-7 She is a former Barrister and a formerGovernor of the College of Law

Professor Triggs has combined an academic career with international commercial legal practice and has advised the Australian and other governments and international organisations on international legal and trade disputes Her focus at the Commission is on the implementation in Australian law of the human rights treaties to which Australia is a party and to work with QDWLRQVLQWKH$VLD3DFLAgraveFUHJLRQRQSUDFWLFDODSSURDFKHVto human rightsProfessor Triggsrsquo is the author of many books and papers on international law including International Law Contemporary Principles and Practices (2nd Ed 2011)

Munjed al MuderisAssociate Professor

AProf Al Muderis is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Squadron Leader in the Australian Air Force Reserve He is also an Ambassador for the Australian Red Cross human rights activist and a refugee Munjed came to Australia by boatRUQLQDJKGDGDWWKHDJHRI0XQMHGKDGWRAacuteHHIraq as a young Doctor having refused the orders of Saddam Hussein to mutilate army desertersrsquo earsMunjed endured a life-threatening journey to Australia After spending 10 months in Curtin Detention Centre upon his release he embarked on a mission to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon He is now one of three surgeons world wide pioneering a revolutionary technology known as Osseointegration

As a leading surgeon in this complex reconstructive and robotic surgery Munjed has helped more than 270 amputees from around the world to improve mobility reduce pain and overall enhance their quality of lifeMunjedrsquos day-to-day work as an Orthopaedic Surgeon involves hip and knee arthroplasty and major reconstructive surgery He teaches at Notre Dame and Macquarie Universities trains local and international surgeons registrars and medical studentsApart from his academic and clinical roles Munjed is heavily involved in humanitarian work volunteering his time as a surgeon and as a human rights advocate +HKDVDIAgraveOLDWLRQVZLWK$PQHVWQWHUQDWLRQDO8QLWHGNations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and represents the Australian Red Cross

AProf Al Muderis is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Squadron Leader in the Australian Air Force Reserve He is also an Ambassador for the Australian Red Cross human rights activist and a refugee Munjed came to Australia by boatRUQLQDJKGDGDWWKHDJHRI0XQMHGKDGWRAacuteHHIraq as a young Doctor having refused the orders of Saddam Hussein to mutilate army desertersrsquo earsMunjed endured a life-threatening journey to Australia After spending 10 months in Curtin Detention Centre upon his release he embarked on a mission to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon He is now one of three surgeons world wide pioneering a revolutionary technology known as Osseointegration

AProf Al Muderis is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Squadron Leader in the Australian Air Force Reserve He is also an Ambassador for the Australian Red Cross human rights activist and a refugee Munjed came to Australia by boatRUQLQDJKGDGDWWKHDJHRI0XQMHGKDGWRAacuteHHIraq as a young Doctor having refused the orders of Saddam Hussein to mutilate army desertersrsquo earsMunjed endured a life-threatening journey to Australia After spending 10 months in Curtin Detention Centre upon his release he embarked on a mission to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon He is now one of three surgeons world wide pioneering a revolutionary technology known as Osseointegration
