When I fly, it drives me nuts when you sit on the tarmac with no idea what is going on? Do we have a mechanical issue? Is there a weather issue? Is it just rush hour? I asked my best friend who is a pilot why there is not better communications and he said sometimes they don’t know.

If you are stuck in traffic, you are worried about getting to work, getting to your kids game or stopping at the store. To certain extent, you don’t care what is going, but you want to the impact on you and how you should adjust your plans. If you are like me, you get frustrated with yourself when you don’t use traveler information tools and you get stuck in traffic.

Since we are an operations center that takes calls, dispatches resources and manages incidents we OWN this timeline and are looking at strategies to tackle each area. We need to know what is going on so we can dispatch resources and get accurate traveler information to our customers. We get pretty good information from Troop T, maintenance and the customers but we are always looking at ways to enhance our situational awarness.

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

-Donald Rumsfeld

This quote relates to security, but is applicable to incident management. We know the knowns. These are incidents that we are aware of and have verified. There are the known unknowns. These are things we think are going on but we are not sure. There are the unknown unknowns. Those are the things we don’t even know we don’t know

Waze is a free navigation app for your GPS equipped smartphone 400+K downloads in PA Spoken turn-by-turn directions and street names Real time traffic reports Integrated destination search: Google, Foursquare, Bing Gaming elements and integrated social networking The waze ecosystem = Crowdsourced data Waze maps are curated and edited by a community of editors. Waze editors manage maps for specific areas, and as they gain more experience they are responsible for larger areas of the map, moving from local community editors to area managers.

TOC Live Map Feature Waze-o-meter – Reflects the traffic congestion of the routes in the watchlist. Unusual traffic –This is for all the bounding box (BB) data. In our case, this is the entire state, so this is not very useful. You can see what are the BB by refreshing the page or by clicking the "Zoom to Broadcasts area". Watchlist - The top route will be the most heavily trafficked route. The tool doesn't have an auto refresh option yet.
