Improv I Fall Semester Ms. Anastasia Rigoli Language and Art Center Telephone: 210-838-7312; E-mail: [email protected] Course description Improvisation Theater is defined as theater that requires actors to spontaneously create a monologue, scene, or play without a script. Not only is knowing how to improvise useful for acting, but it is also good for everyday life. In this class, we will define, discuss, and act out improvisations, both for on-stage and life experience. We will use props, cards, and verbal cues to help, but there will NEVER be a script! Everything you do in my class will be spontaneous, not memorized. We will not perform plays, we will perform reactions. Learning outcomes When you have completed this course you will be able to: 1) Explain, interpret, and analyze improvised situations. 2) Interrogate the significance and role of improvisation in your life. 3) Demonstrate the ability to respond to surprise situations with improvisation, as well as to identify and comprehend the improvisations of others. 4) Work with other actors/people on-stage and in life using the “Yes, and…” motivator. Assignments for the course 1. Acting on Impulse --- 25% Throughout the course of the semester, you will randomly be asked to act out a surprise situation either by yourself or with one or more members of the class. You will be graded on your originality and/or how well you work with your partners. 2. Monologue ---25% You will be asked to perform an on-the-spot monologue based on a

2. Monologue ---25% You will be asked to perform an on-the-spot monologue based on a character profile of your choosing (the character sheets will be distributed a few weeks before the performance). 3. Class Participation ---50%

The majority of your grade in the class will come from your class participation in activities and discussions. If you are shy, this class will help you overcome it, but only if you try!
