French Painting

• The painting on the left is by French artist Jaques Louis David

• This painting shows 3 Roman soldiers leaving their father to go off and fight

• The painting on the right by French artist Ernest Messioner shows Napolean leaving battle

The only respected art during the 1700s and early 1800s were realistic paintings of Classical Roman Scenes, Religious Scenes or History paintings.

Paris, France in the Mid 1800sMany people left their farms to move to Paris for work, making it a bustling city of 2 million people.

• Cafes began opening all over Paris

• The Moulin Rouge Cabaretshow became popular

• Photography was introduced to the public in Paris in 1839

• In 1840 the invention of oilpaints in metal tubes allowed artists to work outdoors

• Impressionists were inspired by Manet’s Modern pictures and broad brushstrokes

• They often painted outside and were most concerned with painting the effects of light

• They exhibited on their own because they were rejected from the main Paris exhibit called the Salon

different times of day to capture the different effects of light

Camille PissaroThis painting is called Boulevard Montmartre in the Winter

• Pissaro painted his surroundings and loved capturing the effects of light in the Impressionist style

• He was older than the other artists and they looked up to him as a father figure

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

• Renoir painted many pictures of women using soft colors

• He is quoted saying to his art dealer, “I want to paint stunning pictures that you can sell for very high prices”

Mary Cassatt

• Mary was an American who lived in Paris

• She loved to paint pictures of woman and children

• She exhibited with the Impressionists

This painting is called Children on The Beach and was painted in 1884

The Impressionists were thought to be radical for letting women paint with them. Most women did not work in the 1800’s

• The artists were influenced by the Impressionists

• The Post Impressionists often used brighter colors and showed more emotion in their work

• Vince tried to show motion in the sky rather than an actual scene

• He was put in an insane asylum• While in the asylum he kept painting• He painted pictures of the doctors,

nurses and the hospital itself• Above is a picture of the hospital

corridor and to the right is a picture of trees on the hospital grounds

• Eventually Van Gogh killed himself

• Poor Van Gogh went insane• Yes, Van Gogh cut part of his own ear off • Why you ask? Van Gogh was mentally ill• This is a Self Portrait afterwards

• He produced still life and landscape paintings using simple geometric shapes

Georges Seurat

• Painting with dots of paint is called pointillism

• The picture looks blurry up close and becomes clear from a distance

• Magazines are printed using this same science

• If you look at a magazine under a magnifying glass you will see little dots of color

• Seurat was inspired by the way the Impressionists placed unmixed paint on the canvas

• He was also interested in science and color theory

• He applied paint as little dots of color
