Marriage and SingleneSS: Both are CallingS of ChriSt’S diSCipleS

Dear GPC Members and Friends,

I am so grateful that GPC will hosting our first annual Mar-riage Enrichment Workshop on March 23. Under Susie Wig-gins’ leadership, we have invited Dr. Michael Taylor to guide participants through a nationally-recognized curriculum that will enhance a couple’s ability to communicate and thrive in their marriage. Dr. Taylor is a marriage and fam-ily therapist from Louisville, KY, and we are grateful that he will share his expertise, humor, and wisdom with us.

The material Dr. Taylor will present is based on the work by another Marriage and Family Counselor, Dr. Sue Johnson, who wrote Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Life-time of Love. There are Hold Me Tight workshops around the country each year (http://www.holdmetightweekends.com), and we are excited to offer this to GPC’s couples. The weekend focuses on seven essential conversations a couple must have in order to foster a healthy and strong marriage. Some of the conversations will draw on the couple’s chal-lenges and weaknesses, and other conversations will mag-nify the couple’s strengths. Engaging with your husband or wife in these conversations will make both individuals better as well make their marriage better, stronger, and more enjoy-able.

Why would we at GPC use our resources to bring an expert like Dr. Taylor to Germantown to talk about marriage? We are doing this because marriage is the source of innumer-able blessings given by God, and people who are called into a marriage relationship need God and the church to help them thrive as a couple. Christ desires to be an active participant in everyone’s marriage. Churches have so much to offer peo-ple in strengthening their discipleship as individuals and in a marriage relationship, and Christianity totally reshapes our understanding of marriage for each person.

It is also true, however, that Christianity reshapes, and often contradicts, our culture’s assumptions about marriage. Mar-riage is not “the next step” of maturation in life for a young adult. Marriage is not something we “have to do” in order to be “whole” or “complete” as a person. Marriage is not some-thing that we enter into because we are madly in love with someone else. Our culture has unrealistic expectations of marriage when it teaches that there is a “perfect soul-mate” out there for everyone. The only perfect soul-mate is Christ. Every other person will disappoint us and prove their imper-fections quickly! Marriage is a calling for disciples to enter

into if it will benefit them in their faith in God and their relation-ship with Christ. One way to think of marriage is: “Will my rela-tionship with Christ be better as a result of marriage?” For many people the answer is yes, and for many the answer is no.

In the Christian tradition, marriage is not a given for each disciple of Christ. Some people are called

by God to live faithfully while remaining single. Sometimes churches treat marriage as if it is the norm for everyone, and we treat sin-gle people as “less than” or “not normal” or “not yet married.” Christina Hitchcock has recently published her research in a book entitled The Significance of Single-

ness, and she writes how churches ought to support people who are not married and

hear God’s call to grow in their discipleship as singles. I have not conducted any scientific research

specific to GPC, but if we are like most churches, then at least 25% of our adult congregation is single, and that percentage runs the spectrum of ages from 25 to 95. While we have many widows and widowers, we also have many younger adults who are single. Living joyfully and obediently as a single person is something that all of us will be called to do at different stages of our lives.

Whether a follower of Christ is married or single, relationships within churches are meant to strengthen the discipleship of both. Whether you are single or married, my prayer is for God to bless your discipleship in Christ to enhance your love for neighbor and self.

Grace, mercy, and peace always,

Th e Wi n d o WW W W . G e r m a n T o W n P r e s . o r G

MuSiC in MarChSunday March 31, the last day of the month is a Sunday that you will want to CIRCLE on your calen-dar and invite guests to join you for worship! It will be worship filled with music as the Chancel Choir will present The Seven Last Words of Christ, A Sa-cred Cantata by Theodore Dubois. The premiere of the work was in Paris on Good Friday, April 19, 1867. It is a favorite during the season of Lent around the world. The work is filled with dramatic choruses, beautiful contemplative pieces, exciting solo work, and an organ score that will challenge our new organist Dr. Alex Benford as well as offer him the opportunity to demonstrate his extensive organ skills. A Sunday that YOU will NOT want to miss/a musical work that will touch every emotion in your being! Sunday March 31, both the 8:30 and 11 worship services.

The month of March is a month filled with beauti-ful music and meaningful worship. March 3, the 1st Sunday in March, is Confirmation Sunday, a day of celebration as a number of our youth com-plete their Confirmation training and officially join the church. An exciting time for our church, and congratulations to all in the Confirmation class. Our anthem on this Sunday will be Hear Me Re-deemer with Marcus King as soloist. March also ushers in the season of Lent beginning with our Ash Wednesday worship at 6:30pm March 6. Our choir will sing an arrangement of a piece credited to Richard Farrant dating back to around 1550, Lord, for Thy Tender Mercies' Sake, Trey Thomas will be soloist for the service.

Other anthems during the month will include, Peace Like A River, It Is Well with My Soul and a lovely arrangement of Neither Death Nor Life featuring one of our youth, Andrew Morse on horn. Other soloists in the month will be Chelsea Miller, Christina Crouse, and Karen Cooper. Music in the month of March will lead us to Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and our celebration of Easter Sunday April 21.

It is very important that I recognize and thank those who make special contributions to our Mu-sic Fund and Teachey Scholarship Fund. These contributions above and beyond their GPC budget commitments allow me the freedom and flexibility to enhance our worship through music with student scholarship singers and guest artists throughout the church year. We thank both the church budget process and those who make special designated fund contributions! It takes a village! It takes a team effort and YOU are a VIP Member of our Music Team!! Thank You!!!

I look forward to seeing you in worship, and if you haven’t yet, make a point to stay and enjoy the Postludes Alex offers each Sunday.

Sunday Mornings, 9:30am-10:30amWinter-Spring 2019

Take a look at what will be going on this month on Sunday mornings. Our hope is for every adult in the GPC commu-nity to be plugged into one group dedicated to study, fellow-ship, and prayer. All of these groups could be a powerful way to come to know the Lord a little more. Contact Pastor Jay ([email protected]; 901-754-5195 x112) with any questions or for more information on any of these groups.

OneGroup: Bible Studies and Small Groups

The goal of GPC's Adult Education Ministry is that every adult be connected to a Bible Study or Small Group, gathering regularly for study, fellowship, and prayer. Groups meet throughout the week, especially Sunday mornings. There's something for everyone, so get plugged in! If you have limited availability, let's work to gather a new one that works for you. Contact Pastor Jay ([email protected]), or check our website (https://germantownpres.org/ministries/adult-education/).

Check the following for options on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, or throughout the week.

Presbyterian Women (PW) Bible Study (circles) will meet on March 5 at 10am. All ladies in the church are invited.

March food items for Project Outreach are canned meats and

macaroni and cheese.

Project Outreach is sponsoring a Circle Challenge for the months of February, March, and April. Food bins for each circle are in the Activ-ity Center. At the end of each collection period each Circle’s food will be weighed, and the Circle who has the most weight in food wins the challenge and a prize. The deadlines for donations are: March 11 for the canned meat and macaroni and cheese; from March 12 - April 15 canned pasta and healthy snacks will be collected, and the cut off date is April 15. From April 16 - May 13 cereal (no sugar) and dry milk are being collected, and the cut off date is May 13. Anyone in the congregation who wishes to contribute food to Project Outreach is welcome.

Threads of Love will be helping with the Joy Prom on March 30. Volunteers are needed to sew, cut, press, and help the shoppers.

PW's March 19 Gathering, beginning at 10am in the Activity Center, features Jeffrey Day. He is the president of the RING16 chapter (est. 1936) of the International Brotherhood of Magicians which was founded in 1922.

He is a consecutive winner (2014, 15, 16, 17, 18) of the local magic competition held in Memphis every November. He has practiced all forms of magical en-tertainment since he was 8 years old, but for the last 15 years he has concentrated on magic of the 19th Century. He will be performing his one man show called “The Mesmerist,”at the historic Fontaine House Museum (1871) once a month. The show is a stroll through The Golden Age of Magic from the 1800s. Most magical effects he will be performing have been rarely seen by non-magicians, much less by current day magicians.

For more information, contact Billie Work at 901-351-0273 or [email protected].

GPC's Theatre Fellowship group is going to the play 1776 at Theatre Memphis on Thursday, March 21.

It is a historical commentary. A seminal event in American history as the nation is ready to declare independence…if only our founding fathers can agree. 1776 puts a human face on the pages of history as we see the men behind the national icons determined to do the right thing for a fledging nation. A funny, insightful, and compelling drama with a striking score and legendary book.

Tickets are $25 or $20 for seniors. The conve-ner is Judy Hobbs. Please email [email protected] or call 573-380-7719 if you plan to attend.

CWednesday night Compass

dinner: 5:30pM, aCtivity CenterprograMMing: 6pM-7pM

Our mid-week ministry, Wednesday Night Compass, continues. Compass is a wonderful way to share in fellowship and grow in discipleship in the heart of each week.

Join us weekly for dinner in the Activity Center at 5:30pm. Adults: $7, Children <12: $4, Max per Family: $20. (Check out more details on our Compass webpage: https://germantownpres.org/involve-ment/the-compass/.)

Most weeks, our Youth (grades 6-12) meet off-site at a Germantown restaurant (this month Panera, 7850 Poplar). You can catch a ride from church with Pastor Amanda at 5:30pm, returning at 7pm, or meet everyone there!

Compass March Schedule for Adults:

GPC to Welcome Missionary to Compass on March 13 For the past few years, GPC has partnered with and supported a missionary who has been serving in a country whose government is typically unreceptive to Christian mission work. For concern for her safety, we have been unable to print her name or even where she has been serving in any resource that eventually goes online, which includes our newsletters, bulletin announcements, and of course social media and church website. As a result, many at our church may be unaware that we are even supporting this person!

For a short time, this missionary will be back in the United States and will be joining us on Wednesday, March 13, at Wednesday Night Compass to share with us about her experiences, joys, and challenges in mission work abroad.

Dinner begins at 5:30pm in the Activity Center, with the program beginning around 6pm, wrap-ping up at 7pm.

March 6, Ash WednesdayMeal at 5:30pm, Worship Service at 6:30pm

Instead of normal Compass this week, we will gather for dinner at 5:30pm like usual, but then we’ll mark the beginning of the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday worship service, starting at 6:30pm in the GPC sanctuary.

March 13 [new addition to schedule]Visit from GPC Global Mission PartnerMeal at 5:30pm, Program at 6:00pm Our program will be led by a missionary, one of GPC’s global mission partners, who has been serv-ing in a country typically unreceptive to mission work. (See separate article below.)

March 20Brainstorming & Feedback for Compass Next YearMeal at 5:30pm, Program at 6:00pm In past years, we would only dedicate a few min-utes of one evening’s program to thinking about the next year, and that has proven too little. So this year, we’ll dedicate an entire evening to reflecting on the past year of Compass and brainstorming on what it might look like when our mid-week ministry resumes in the Fall.

March 27 – April 10Guest Speaker Series: A Politician, a Priest, and a Rabbi

For the final three weeks of Compass, we’ll wel-come three guest speakers who will share on their experience, joys, and challenges, as people of faith within our community.

April 3: Rev. Dr. Dorothy Wells (from St. George’s Episcopal)

Wholistic transformation is not something that oc-curs overnight. It takes a very long time, and often the progress is baby steps. But the funny thing about baby steps is you don’t feel like you’re making any progress as you’re inching along, but then suddenly you see something that surprises you and you realize that all those inches have become yards or miles!

That’s Mabinty’s story. When we first met Mabinty years ago, she was so wounded that she couldn’t trust anyone, and her normal way of living was “hurt first before someone can hurt you.” People were genuinely frightened of her.

She rarely smiled, and she neglected her personal hygiene. Life had not been good to Mabinty after she was crippled by polio at a young age. But she continued to come to meetings, and after a few years was invited to join the Fair Trade Co-op. She was hesitant, because she didn’t think she would be capable enough to make the products. But she decided to try, and something clicked. Mabinty found acceptance in community, and everything changed.

Recently Mabinty signed up to take the 16-week Transformation Training course. She was a little shy, feeling out of her comfort zone. This was a huge change from her typically aggressive style! But she faithfully attended all 16 weeks of training. At the end of training, Mabinty gave testimony to the radical changes in her own life. She recognized that she had not valued herself, which led to her poor hygiene, lack of self-care, and risky behavior. She told about sell-ing her body for sex in order to feed her family, and how she would not consider that to be a reasonable means of income anymore, but now had more digni-fied means of making money. She talked about how

she used to scream at and beat her children because she was angry all the time, but now she was learn-ing to reason with them and speak more gently. But besides all of these auto-biographical testimonies, the changes in Mabinty are visible. Mabinty laughs. She hugs people instead of slapping them. She has friends. She is clean. She practically glows! Mabinty has begun to understand that God made her for good purposes, and she’s beginning to know what those purposes are.

While so much change has occurred in Mabinty’s life, there is still more to come! Mabinty now talks about a God who loves her, but she has yet to understand or receive salvation through faith in Christ. She still lives in poverty, and life is a struggle for her. But Women of Hope is committed to continue walking out this transformational journey with Mabinty, and many other women like her.

COn Saturday, March 30, GPC will be the host location for Dressfest. Dressfest is when girls come to select a dress free of charge to wear to the Memphis Joy Prom in April and guys come to be measured and fitted for a tuxedo. The entire Activity Center will be transformed into a large boutique complete with racks of dresses, tables of jewelry, changing rooms, and thanks to Threads of Love – we will even be able to do minor alterations on site.

While the girls do get their dresses for free, it is a little more complicated for the fellows. Their tuxedos will have to be rented, and we are looking for folks who would be willing to sponsor a tuxedo or two.

Last year, GPC generously paid for every tuxedo that was rented, outfitting over 90 guys to attend Prom.

And then in April comes the really big event – the Memphis Joy Prom! This year the theme is “An Evening to Remember,” and this will be our sixth year putting on this event for the special need community. With over 230 participants expected you can only begin to imagine the num-ber of volunteers it will take to pull off this event – actually somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 … So we certainly could use your help!

So whether you would like to volunteer to help a girl select the perfect dress to wear to the prom, volunteer with Threads of Love for just a day, write a check to sponsor a tuxedo, attend and volunteer at the Prom, or complete a sponsorship packet, know this – “Together we can embrace the special needs community as if we were embracing Jesus Himself!”

Thank you! Please contact Monica Kirby at [email protected] and let her know you want to help spread some joy!

On February 10, GPC's 4th and 5th graders enjoyed a pizza lunch following the 11am worship ser-vice and then created and personally delivered Valentine arrangements for church members living

at Kirby Pines and The Village, including Erwin and Wes Westmoreland. Everyone had a fantastic time. See also a note below from Erwin Westmoreland.

From Erwin Westmoreland, a paraphrase. After she left Wes at the hospital, she struggled home with her back hurting and sad for Wes. When she found the flowers left on her door, she was so touched and wrote "All of you whose little fingers made the homemade vases holding flowers, made a VERY

TIRED and SAD woman feel warmth of LOVE."

Thank you, Ms. Anna, for teaching GPC's children that actions speak louder than words. Thank you, 4th and 5th graders, for showing everyone in your church family

what it looks like to love and encourage each other in the Body of Christ.

neW gloBal MiSSion trip to ukraine: CaMp living hope

August 2-14, 2019

My Friends,

Sometimes the Lord seems to open the right set of doors so that we just have to take the next step to see where the Spirit leads us. I feel that very thing has happened in conversations I had last Fall with Nate Hicks.

Nate is new to GPC, moving to Memphis for graduate school last year and shortly thereafter joining our choir. Through Jerold Teachey, he reached out seeking the prayers of our Missions Leadership Team as he continues in a relationship with a particular family, pastor, and ministry outside of Kyiv, Ukraine. Well, he can tell you about it better than I can, so I’d encourage you to read his words n the next page.

Very quickly I could recognize the clear passion he had for this ministry and in particular for Camp Liv-ing Hope, a camp put on by a pastor named Misha as a chance to share the good news of Jesus and the love of God with the local young people. For the past few years, Nate has joined Pastor Misha in Ukraine through his home church in Orlando, and though Nate had only approached our Missions Leadership Team seeking prayer and support, I asked him what it might look like if this opportunity were opened up to the GPC community.

Nate has followed through in spades, so your Missions Leadership felt God’s leading to

take a step out in faith, seeing if any with-in the GPC community feel a call not only to serve as a short-term mission-ary in Ukraine this August, but also to be entrusted to discern whether this ministry Camp Living Hope might be where God is calling us to partner in a more long-term way.

I would encourage you to consider whether God is leading you in par-

ticular to serve in Ukraine this summer. Though a larger team from Nate’s home

church in Orlando will be going, we would be sending just a handful of people to join them, hopeful that through this handful of people this partnership might gain a foothold within our church for future trips and a deeper partnership.

Please read what Nate has to say, and discern if this is something God is calling you to do. Contact me if you would like to learn more ([email protected]; 901-754-5195 x112). You can register for the trip online on our Global Missions page: https://germantownpres.org/involvement/global-missions/.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Jay

In conjunction with the new education building, all church buildings will have a new locking system in place by April 1. Upgrades to our external doors have been installed, and soon we will replace the two key pads with card readers in order to control access to our buildings. If you have a key that unlocks any physical, external door, it won't work after that time. Access for events requiring multiple doors to be open will be controlled automatically. If you have a regular need to be in the church building outside normal business hours, please stop in the Church Office and fill out an information form for a key-card. The Buildings and Grounds

Committee of the Diaconate will assess each application for a key card.

Ukraine *New trip!*August 2-14, 2019

Are you called to serve on one of our Global Mission Teams in 2019? GPC will be sending teams to Xpujil, Mexico, and northern Ghana.

In Mexico, we will continue our partnership with missionary Todd Luke, the church he serves, and the clean water ministry his church directs, constructing water cisterns for households in the community.

In Ghana, we will deepen our relationship with our friends in the Upper Presbytery and Rev. Emmanuel Atami, who visited with us here in October.

*New trip!* In Ukraine, we will send an exploratory team with our own Nate Hicks to discern a possible partnership with a pastor near Kyiv. Separate article on page 15 gives more details.

Contact Pastor Jay ([email protected], 901-754-5195 x112) for more details about any of these mission teams. Registration open at https://germantownpres.org/involvement/global-missions.

Note from Nate Hicks on Camp Living Hope in Ukraine

Hello my name is Nathanael Hicks, my family has been involved with missions

in Ukraine through a relationship with the Andrashko family for over 16 years.

Elder Misha is the head pastor for the region of Kyiv. His son “Little” Misha is the

Pastor of a village church outside of Kyiv, and is the head coordinator of “Camp

Living Hope.”

I have had the opportunity these past two summers to go to Ukraine and serve

in the Ministries at Camp Living Hope. At the Camp, Misha and his family strive

to reach the people in need around their community. However one of their main

focuses is to reach and impact the lives of the orphaned and the widowed.

I will be going August 2 with a small group of Americans to team up with Misha

and his team of volunteers, to put on a two week camp for children. This camp

will be a place that Orphans from nearby orphanages and the local children can

come and play games, eat hot meals, sing songs, and learn about the love of God.

My goal for this upcoming trip, is to seek out my fellow brothers and sisters in

Christ serving in full time ministry and try to be an encouragement to them and

their ministry. I hope to develop lasting relationships that can continue to be

mutually encouraging even when we return, and I Hope to continue to foster the

ones I’ve already made.

Thank you,

Nathanael Hicks

BCA-GPC Event - An Affair of the Heart

Memphis Athletic Ministries Needs You

Last Month to Serve with Room in the Inn

Room in the Inn season continues! We are shelter-ing guests Nov-March on the 2nd, 4th & 5th Sat-urdays of each month. Volunteers are still needed for lots of opportunities to help the unsheltered in our own community. Contact Susan Shirley Hurt (901-491-4890, [email protected]) for more information.

Donations needed! Drop in bin outside of church flower room.

Tutoring and coaching with our mission partner Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) continues through the school year! MAM runs a number of after-school ministries across the city, and each week, members from GPC join MAM's gym at Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church (4450 Knight Arnold) to coach reading and vocabulary and to help with homework, usually on Tuesday afternoons but any weekday available.

We need more coaches! Contact Pastor Jay ([email protected], 901-754-5195 x112) for more details.

For the fifth graders at Binghampton Christian Academy, it would be hard to find a better Valen-tine’s Day party venue than Memphis’s amazing Crosstown Concourse. That’s where a team from Germantown Presbyterian Church took the BCA students to celebrate the holiday. And celebrate they did, with food, dance, and fun for all.

The field trip was held in conjunction with Church Health, a primary tenant of Crosstown Concourse and an organization tasked with getting and keep-ing people healthy in mind, body, and spirit. The event opened with a dance and movement class. With Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” blaring, students and GPC volunteers grooved, glided, and got their hearts racing, an appropriate activity on a day that celebrates the heart.

The movement class was followed by a tour of Crosstown Concourse (in what once was a Sears distribution facility) and a visit to the building’s nascent charter high school—Crosstown High. The BCA students were fascinated by the charter high school school and its unique project-based learning approach.

After the tour, the BCA students got to participate in a “prepare your own healthy lunch” featuring vegetarian tacos and fresh fruit with dip. The students loved the food and the hands-on meal preparation.

This is the fifth year that GPC has worked with the same class of students at BCA, sponsoring parties and field trips, praying and mentoring individual children, and helping provide supplies for the classroom. Additionally, Presbyterian Women regularly serves the school with meals prepared for the school’s residence halls.

BCA is a private, Christian K-8 school located in one of the poorest sections of Memphis. It is one of GPC’s local missions. “Connecting with the children at BCA, watching other church members form loving bonds with the children, and seeing the impact of those bonds has been deeply re-warding,” said church member Helen Norman.

If anyone at GPC wants to learn more about Binghampton Christian Academy or wishes to take a tour of the facility, please contact Helen at [email protected]. BCA welcomes visitors, especially members of the congregation of GPC which has been so supportive of the school.

CRoom in the Inn

Room In The Inn runs November 1-March 31 for women, men and families (Note: It is likely we will serve as a ladies-only shelter again this summer). We provide FREE shelter, warm meals, and a safe environment to the “un-sheltered.” Thus far, for the months of Novem-ber 2018 to January 2019, Memphis-area churches have provided 4,448 total beds to approximately 110 women and 150 men. To our great disappointment, we have turned guests away 917 times! That is 917 times too many!!!! In November we served 6 families with 19 children. In December, we hosted 7 families with 12 children, and in January, we served 7 families with 14 children. The need for every type of guest is significant.

Throughout the Memphis Metro area, we currently have 44 churches (representing 13 denominations), 2 non-profits, and one synagogue providing “Holy Hospitality” seven nights each week. But, as you can clearly see from our numbers, we are in serious need for more involve-ment from our community. RITI needs more individual volunteers on a daily and weekly basis, as more churches are signing on to support the ever-growing demands of the homelessness in our city. Please pray about where God may be leading you to get involved through volunteer opportunities in our church. If you feel that volunteering with RITI may be a good fit for you, please get in touch with Susan Hurt, and she will plug you in to a volunteer opportunity that is perfect for your spiritual gift and interests. Serving the homeless requires many folks with many individual gifts and personalities, and we’re certain we have the perfect spot for you!

We are blessed with a great core team of leaders in place: Rachel Wall, Sherrie and Neal Horner, Honour and Eddie Batey, and Elaine Hyde have been instrumental in helping this season and in getting our RITI program off the ground. But we need you! Please join us and we will find you a spot where you can best serve as the feet and hands of Jesus Christ!

Here at GPC we are always looking for loads of volun-teers. We need 15 to 25 volunteers each night we host, just to be operational!!!! GPC hosts the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Saturdays of the month from November 1 to March 31. There are so many ways to help! Perhaps your Sunday school class, fellowship group, men's breakfast group, choir, or youth group can work together to collect dona-tions and help purchase supplies. Please look through this list and see with which donations you might be able to help.

Should you have questions or need additional informa-tion, please contact Susan Shirley Hurt @ 901-491-4890.

Following is a list of donated items we regularly need at RITI:

>mens white undershirts (S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL)>mens boxers (S, M, XXL, XXXL)women’s underwear (sizes 5-10)>deodorant (men's & women's)>dayquil & nyquil pills>cough drops>chapstick/blistex/carmex>sharpie markers>lysol>name tags>razors>twin sheet sets, not jersey >twin blankets>rain ponchos>white sports socks (men's & women's)>women's cotton sports bras, 3 Pack (S-XXXL)>backpacks in darks colors

What's It Like Serving at Room in the Inn? by Sally Fienup

I arrived at 8pm to a warm, bright room that had just been tidied from a home-cooked din-ner. Several friends were gathered at the table, in conversation, sipping on coffee. Others had retreated to their beds, which had been made for them with sheets that had been freshly-laun-dered overnight. The TV was on to the news, and we all chatted about whether or not Memphis would receive snow overnight. A whiteboard listed each guest, and their name was crossed off

if they had finished their quick shower. Still, other guests folded laundry they had recovered from the washer and dryer provided just for guests. I rolled up my sleeves to help another

"Mom" volunteer give a 2-month-old and a 3-year-old a warm sudsy sink-bath. Oh, and did I mention these guests would wake up in the morning to be driven back downtown to spend the day on the streets? Did you know that GPC comes alongside churches all over the city to serve in the Room In The Inn ministry? This ministry exists to "provide emergency shelter and meals during the coldest months of the year—November through March" to our Memphis homeless

brothers and sisters. I have been blessed to serve this year. GPC hosts two Saturdays per month during the cold season, and we rely on 18 volunteers each time. There is truly a roll for every spiritual gift, even if yours is not hospitality (like doing a load of laundry!). You can learn

more about this ministry on their website or volunteer to serve by contacting [email protected].

GPC Budget UpdateGPC Financial Summary, January 2019 Jan. 2019 2019 YTD Jan. 2018 2018 YTD

Revenue $ 199,763 $ 199,763 $ 134,422 $ 134,422Expenses $ 177,861 $ 177,861 $ 131,012 $ 131,012Net $ 21,902 $ 21,902 $ 3,410 $ 3,410

Total revenue for January was $199,763, which was impacted by the addition of 2019 pledges paid in late 2018. Our expenses were $177,861, which included the establishment of a main-tenance reserve from our budget to cushion the impact of predictable major maintenance projects we will need to address in the next 3 years.

Contributions to Building Tomorrow Today for January were $13,655, and construction ex-penses were minimal. This is unusual and strictly a matter of timing. Construction is progress-ing toward a late spring completion.
