● Unplug the power cord and charger during lightningstorms to avoid electric shock or fire.

● When riding in a car, do not leave your phone or set up thehands-free car kit near to the air bag. If wirelessequipment is improperly installed and the air bag isactivated, you may be seriously injured.

● Do not use a hand-held phone while driving.

● Do not use the phone in areas where its use is prohibited.(For example: aircraft).

● Do not expose the battery charger or adapter to directsunlight or use it in places with high humidity, such as abathroom.

● Never store your phone in temperatures less than -15°C orgreater than 50°C.

● Do not use harsh chemicals(such as alcohol, benzene,thinners, etc.) or detergents to clean your phone. There is arisk of this causing a fire.

● Do not drop, strike, or shake your phone severely. Suchactions may harm the internal circuit boards of the phone.

● Do not use your phone in high explosive areas as the phonemay generate sparks.

● Do not damage the power cord by bending, twisting, pulling,or heating. Do not use the plug if it is loose as it may causea fire or electric shock.

● Do not place any heavy items on the power cord. Do notallow the power cord to be crimped as it may cause fire orelectric shock.

● Do not handle the phone with wet hands while it is beingcharged. It may cause an electric shock or seriouslydamage your phone.

● Do not disassemble the phone.

● Do not place or answer calls while charging the phone as itmay short-circuit the phone and/or cause electric shock orfire.

Charge the battery fully before theinitial use of the phone. Thephone comes with arechargeable battery. Keep thebattery charged while not in usein order to maximize talk andstandby time when using thephone.

1. Plug the AC adapter into theelectrical outlet.

2. Insert the round end of theadapter into the AC adapterjack on the bottom of thephone. (Make sure the batteryis installed.)

● As the phone charges, thebattery icon continuallydisplays a progression fromempty ( ) to full ( ).

It takes about three hours to fullyrecharge a completely rundownbattery. When fully charged,battery icon indicates chargingby twinkling.

BBaatttteerryy CChhaarrggee LLeevveellThe battery charge level is shownat the top right of the LCD screen.

When the battery charge levelbecomes low, the low batterysensor will alert you in threeways: sounding an audible tone,blinking the battery icon outline,and displaying low battery.Recharge soon. If the batterycharge level becomesexceedingly low, the phone willautomatically switch off and anyfunction in progress will not besaved.

1) If you use the unauthorizedbattery, it may cause thedamage to or explosion of thebattery. Therefore, pleaseprohibit using the unauthorizedones.

2) You do not need to wait untilthe battery completely runsdown to recharge the battery.

3) Use only LG batteries andchargers specific to yourmodel of phone. LG’s chargersare designed to maximizebattery life.

4) Do not disassemble or short-circuit the battery.

5) Keep the battery’s metalcontacts clean.

6) Replace the battery when it nolonger provides acceptable

performance. The battery canbe recharged several hundredtimes before it needsreplacing.

7) Recharge the battery if it hasnot been used for a long timeto maximize battery life.

8) Do not expose the batterycharger to direct sunlight oruse it in areas of high humidity,such as the bathroom.

9) Do not leave the battery in hotor cold places as it maydeteriorate batteryperformance.

They also emit very lowlevels of RF when in the stand-bymode. Whereas high levels of RFcan produce health effects (byheating tissue), exposure to lowlevel RF that does not produceheating effects causes no known

In somecases, other researchers havehad difficulty in reproducingthose studies, or in determiningthe reasons for inconsistentresults.

2. What is FDA's role concerningthe safety of wireless phones?

Under the law, FDA does notreview the safety of radiation-emitting consumer products suchas wireless phones before theycan be sold, as it does with newdrugs or medical devices.However, the agency hasauthority to take action if wirelessphones are shown to emitradiofrequency energy (RF) at a

level that is hazardous to theuser. In such a case, FDA couldrequire the manufacturers ofwireless phones to notify users ofthe health hazard and to repair,replace or recall the phones sothat the hazard no longer exists. Although the existing scientificdata do not justify FDA regulatoryactions, FDA has urged thewireless phone industry to take anumber of steps, including thefollowing:

• Support needed research intopossible biological effects ofRF of the type emitted bywireless phones;

• Design wireless phones in away that minimizes any RFexposure to the user that is notnecessary for device function;and

• Cooperate in providing usersof wireless phones with thebest possible information on

FDA belongs to an interagencyworking group of the federalagencies that have responsibilityfor different aspects of RF safetyto ensure coordinated efforts atthe federal level. The followingagencies belong to this workinggroup:

The National Institutes of Healthparticipates in some interagencyworking group activities, as wellFDA shares regulatoryresponsibilities for wirelessphones with the Federal

Communications Commission(FCC). All phones that are sold inthe United States must complywith FCC safety guidelines thatlimit RF exposure. FCC relies onFDA and other health agenciesfor safety questions aboutwireless phones.FCC also regulates the basestations that the wireless phonenetworks rely upon. While thesebase stations operate at higherpower than do the wirelessphones themselves, the RFexposures that people get fromthese base stations are typicallythousands of times lower thanthose they can get from wirelessphones. Base stations are thusnot the subject of the safetyquestions discussed in thisdocument.

3. What kinds of phones are thesubject of this update?

here to hand-held wireless phonswith built-in antennas, oftencalled “cell”, “mobile”, or “PCS”phones. These types of wirelessphones can expose the user tomeasurable radiofrequencyenergy(RF) because of the shortdistance between the phone andthe user’s head. These RF exposures are limitedby Federal CommunicationsCommission safety guidelinesthat were developed with theadvice of FDA and other federalhealth and safety agencies.When the phone is located atgreater distances from the user,the exposure to RF is drasticallylower because a person's RFexposure decreases rapidly withincreasing distance from thesource. The so-called "cordlessphones," which have a base unitconnected to the telephonewiring in a house, typicallyoperate at far lower power levels,

and thus produce RF exposuresfar below the FCC safety limits.

4. What are the results of theresearch done already?

The research done thus far hasproduced conflicting results, andmany studies have suffered fromflaws in their research methods.Animal experiments investigatingthe effects of radiofrequencyenergy (RF) exposurescharacteristic of wireless phoneshave yielded conflicting resultsthat often cannot be repeated inother laboratories. A few animalstudies, however, have suggestedthat low levels of RF couldaccelerate the development ofcancer in laboratory animals.However, many of the studiesthat showed increased tumordevelopment used animals thathad been genetically engineeredor treated with cancer causingchemicals so as to be pre-

disposed to develop cancer in theabsence of RF exposure. Otherstudies exposed the animals toRF for up to 22 hours per day.These conditions are not similarto the conditions under whichpeople use wireless phones, sowe don’t know with certaintywhat the results of such studiesmean for human health.Three large epidemiology studieshave been published sinceDecember 2000. Between them,the studies investigated anypossible association between theuse of wireless phones andprimary brain cancer, glioma,meningioma, or acousticneuroma, tumors of the brain orsalivary gland, leukemia, or othercancers. None of the studiesdemonstrated the existence ofany harmful health effects fromwireless phone RF exposures.However, none of the studies cananswer questions about long-term exposures, since the

average period of phone use inthese studies was around threeyears.

5. What research is needed todecide whether RF exposurefrom wireless phones poses ahealth risk?

A combination of laboratorystudies and epidemiologicalstudies of people actually usingwireless phones would providesome of the data that are needed.Lifetime animal exposure studiescould be completed in a fewyears. However, very largenumbers of animals would beneeded to provide reliable proofof a cancer promoting effect ifone exists. Epidemiologicalstudies can provide data that isdirectly applicable to humanpopulations, but 10 or more yearsfollow-up may be needed toprovide answers about somehealth effects, such as cancer.This is because the interval

between the time of exposure to acancer-causing agent and thetime tumors develop — if they do— may be many, many years. Theinterpretation of epidemiologicalstudies is hampered by difficultiesin measuring actual RF exposureduring day-to-day use of wirelessphones. Many factors affect thismeasurement, such as the angleat which the phone is held, orwhich model of phone is used.

6. What is FDA doing to find outmore about the possiblehealth effects of wirelessphone RF?

FDA is working with the U.S.National Toxicology Program andwith groups of investigatorsaround the world to ensure thathigh priority animal studies areconducted to address importantquestions about the effects ofexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF).

FDA has been a leadingparticipant in the World HealthOrganization InternationalElectromagnetic Fields (EMF)Project since its inception in 1996.An influential result of this workhas been the development of adetailed agenda of researchneeds that has driven theestablishment of new researchprograms around the world. TheProject has also helped develop aseries of public informationdocuments on EMF issues. FDA and the CellularTelecommunications & InternetAssociation (CTIA) have a formalCooperative Research andDevelopment Agreement (CRADA)to do research on wireless phonesafety. FDA provides the scientificoversight, obtaining input fromexperts in government, industry,and academic organizations.CTIA-funded research isconducted through contracts to

independent investigators. Theinitial research will include bothlaboratory studies and studies ofwireless phone users. The CRADAwill also include a broadassessment of additional researchneeds in the context of the latestresearch developments aroundthe world.

7. How can I find out how muchradiofrequency energyexposure I can get by using mywireless phone?

All phones sold in the UnitedStates must comply with FederalCommunications Commission(FCC) guidelines that limitradiofrequency energy (RF)exposures. FCC established theseguidelines in consultation withFDA and the other federal healthand safety agencies. The FCC limitfor RF exposure from wirelesstelephones is set at a SpecificAbsorption Rate (SAR) of 1.6watts per kilogram (1.6 W/kg). The

FCC limit is consistent with thesafety standards developed bythe Institute of Electrical andElectronic Engineering (IEEE) andthe National Council on RadiationProtection and Measurement. Theexposure limit takes intoconsideration the body’s ability toremove heat from the tissues thatabsorb energy from the wirelessphone and is set well below levelsknown to have effects.Manufacturers of wirelessphones must report the RFexposure level for each model ofphone to the FCC. The FCC website(http://www.fcc.gov/oet/rfsafety/)gives directions for locating theFCC identification number on yourphone so you can find yourphone’s RF exposure level in theonline listing.

8. What has FDA done tomeasure the radiofrequencyenergy coming from wirelessphones ?

The Institute of Electrical andElectronic Engineers (IEEE) isdeveloping a technical standardfor measuring the radiofrequencyenergy (RF) exposure fromwireless phones and otherwireless handsets with theparticipation and leadership ofFDA scientists anring the rate atwhich RF is deposited in theheads of wireless phone users.The test method uses a tissue-simulating model of the humanhead. Standardized SAR testmethodology is expected togreatly improve the consistencyof measurements made atdifferent laboratories on the samephone. SAR is the measurementof the amount of energy absorbedin tissue, either by the wholebody or a small part of the body. Itis measured in watts/kg (ormilliwatts/g) of matter. Thismeasurement is used todetermine whether a wireless

phone complies with safetyguidelines.

9. What steps can I take toreduce my exposure toradiofrequency energy frommy wireless phone?

If there is a risk from theseproducts--and at this point we donot know that there is--it isprobably very small. But if you areconcerned about avoiding evenpotential risks, you can take afew simple steps to minimize yourexposure to radiofrequencyenergy (RF). Since time is a keyfactor in how much exposure aperson receives, reducing theamount of time spent using awireless phone will reduce RFexposure.

• If you must convict extendedconversations by wirelessphone every day, you couldplace more distance betweenyour body and the source of

the RF, since the exposurelevel drops off dramaticallywith distance. For example,you could use a headset andcarry the wireless phone awayfrom your body or use awireless phone connected to aremote antenna

Again, the scientific data do notdemonstrate that wirelessphones are harmful. But if youare concerned about the RFexposure from these products,you can use measures like thosedescribed above to reduce yourRF exposure from wireless phoneuse.

10. What about children usingwireless phones?

The scientific evidence does notshow a danger to users ofwireless phones, includingchildren and teenagers. If youwant to take steps to lowerexposure to radiofrequency

energy (RF), the measuresdescribed above would apply tochildren and teenagers usingwireless phones. Reducing thetime of wireless phone use andincreasing the distance betweenthe user and the RF source willreduce RF exposure. Some groups sponsored by othernational governments haveadvised that children bediscouraged from using wirelessphones at all. For example, thegovernment in the United Kingdomdistributed leaflets containingsuch a recommendation inDecember 2000. They noted thatno evidence exists that using awireless phone causes braintumors or other ill effects. Theirrecommendation to limit wirelessphone use by children was strictlyprecautionary; it was not based onscientific evidence that any healthhazard exists.

11. What about wireless phoneinterference with medicalequipment?

Radiofrequency energy (RF) fromwireless phones can interact withsome electronic devices. For thisreason, FDA helped develop adetailed test method to measureelectromagnetic interference(EMI) of implanted cardiacpacemakers and defibrillatorsfrom wireless telephones. Thistest method is now part of astandard sponsored by theAssociation for the Advancementof Medical instrumentation(AAMI). The final draft, a jointeffort by FDA, medical devicemanufacturers, and many othergroups, was completed in late2000. This standard will allowmanufacturers to ensure thatcardiac pacemakers anddefibrillators are safe fromwireless phone EMI. FDA hastested hearing aids for

interference from handheldwireless phones and helpeddevelop a voluntary standard

sponsored by the Institute ofElectrical and ElectronicEngineers (IEEE). This standardspecifies test methods andperformance requirements forhearing aids and wireless phonesso that no interference occurswhen a person uses a“compatible” phone and a“compatible” hearing aid at thesame time. This standard wasapproved by the IEEE in 2000.
