GENERAL INFORMATION

The Western Australian Department of Education provides an allowance to assist eligible families with secondary schooling costs. To be eligible for the allowance the parent/guardian must hold a Department of Human Services (Centrelink) or Veterans’ Affairs card that represents a statement of income for the family. The allowance consists of two components:

$115 Clothing Allowance paid directly to the parent/guardian or the school.

$235 Educational Program Allowance paid directly to the school.

Application is made by the parent or guardian for student/s enrolled in Years 7 – 12 studying a full time secondary course at a Western Australian public school.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Parent or Guardian must hold one of the following cards:

Department of Human Services (Centrelink) Health Care Card

Department of Human Services (Centrelink) Pensioner Concession Card

Veterans’ Affairs Pensioner Concession Card Please Note: The only Veterans’ Affairs Card that meets the criteria is a blue card that is issued annually and expires in December each year. This card is income means tested. The parent/guardian must be the holder of a card that is valid some time during first term. The only exception to this is when a student holds their own health care card and has been declared independent by Centrelink (e.g. Living Away from Home). In this instance, a letter of confirmation from Centrelink needs to accompany the application. The allowance is paid up to and including the year the student turns 18 years of age i.e. students born in 1997 or before are ineligible in 2016.

APPLICATION FORMS Application forms are to be completed at the school

during Term 1 only. Applications close last

day of Term 1 – Friday 8 April 2016

LATE APPLICATIONS

Late applications will only be accepted in extenuating circumstances and must be accompanied with a written explanation. Eligible interstate or overseas students who are enrolled after first term may apply for the allowance. Date of enrolment must be noted on the application.

CONTRIBUTIONS & CHARGES

Schools will receive the Educational Program Allowance of $235 for Secondary Assistance recipients. For students in Years 7 to 10 the allowance will be paid directly to the school and applied towards the voluntary contribution. For students in Years 11 and 12 the allowance will be applied to cover charges.

CLOTHING ALLOWANCE

The Clothing Allowance of $115 will be paid to the parent/guardian unless indicated on the application form that you wish it to be paid to the school. If payment to the parent/guardian is requested, the payment will be deposited into the parent/guardian bank account. It can take between 8 – 12 weeks to receive this payment. The BSB and Bank Account Number must be supplied when completing the application.

PROCESSING OF PAYMENTS

Once the form is completed by the parent/guardian, the school will forward it to the Schools Resourcing and Budgeting Directorate for processing. Supplying Uniform for Kinross College

KINROSS COLLEGE` Falkland Way, Kinross WA 6028

Ph: 9306 6000 Fax: 9306 6011 ABN: 70510 109 983 Dear Parent/Guardian Important Information for parents Re: English Student Workbooks for 2016 As a part of the Kinross College 2016 stationery requirements and booklist, all students in Years 7 to 9 will be asked to purchase the CARS and STARS Plus Student Workbooks. These books are an essential part of the English reading program. CARS & STARS Plus is a comprehensive reading program consisting of ten levels (P-H) that allows teachers to identify and teach twelve reading and comprehension strategies, greatly improving student literacy results. The program is divided into two parts: CARS Plus (the assessment portion) and STARS Plus (the instruction portion). These workbooks have been an important part of the English program for the last 2 years and we are seeing fantastic improvement across all years in students’ reading and comprehension abilities. Students initially complete a placement test and are then placed on a level which is appropriate to their current reading and comprehension ability. Students who attended the College in 2015 will automatically progress to the next level in the series. This differentiated program allows students to read texts which are at a level suitable for their current ability and leads to students being more engaged in reading lessons. As a result, they can experience success with their reading and improve their reading and comprehension abilities. To ensure availability of these workbooks for the commencement of the 2016 school year, it is strongly recommended that they are purchased through the attached booklist. This will then enable easy distribution of books to students at the beginning of Term 1, 2016. All new students to Kinross College in 2016 will sit a placement test in week 1 of Term 1. This will ensure they are provided with the correct workbook for their individual level. If you would like further information on these workbooks, please contact via phone or email: Jeanavieve Walia [email protected] Head of English Melissa Boyer [email protected] English Teacher Your support is greatly appreciated and makes a significant difference to teachers and students with curriculum delivery in the essential learning area of English. Yours sincerely

ONLINE LEARNING PROGRAMS The following Online Learning Programs will be used by students in 2016.

WORDFLYERS In 2016 the English Faculty is introducing an interactive Literacy computer program called WordFlyers for all Year 7 students. This program will help students learn, apply and revise literacy skills at their own level. The activities will enable students to practise selected aspects of language that underpin the development of knowledge, understandings and skills in the literacy and language strands of the curriculum. These lessons will provide opportunities for students to practise more effective language skills. WordFlyers is written specifically for the outcomes in the new Australian Curriculum. The interactive activities provide repeated opportunities to correct poor spelling and punctuation habits and learn new literacy skills that will improve student writing in all subject areas. MATHLETICS Mathletics is the world’s leading online numeracy resource, helping students to love learning and achieve greater results through engaging content that perfectly matches their school curriculum. Students have 24/7 access to Mathletics which can be utilised both in the classroom and at home. All Students in Years 7 to 10 will be utilising this great resource which will make a significant difference to teachers and students with curriculum delivery in Mathematics. A compulsory charge of $10.00 for WordFlyers and $10.00 for Mathletics has been included in the Contributions and Charges sheet enclosed in this information package. Please ensure that these payments are made by the due date of Thursday 18 February 2016.

If you have any further queries regarding these programs please email WordFlyers co-ordinator – [email protected] Head of Mathematics - [email protected]

LOCKER HIRE 2016

Due to the significant amount of damage that has been done to our Kinross College lockers, we have decided to gradually replace them (as funding allows) with a sturdier and more robust option. The first bank of 80 new lockers will be installed a few weeks into Term 1, 2016. At the start of Term 1, an Offer of Locker Hire letter will be sent to parents of Year 10 students only (due to limited availability), outlining the Locker Hire Terms and Conditions and the Locker Hire Agreement, which must be signed by both student and parent if you want to take advantage of this offer . Please be aware that lockers will be hired out on a first in basis. If your child is not initially allocated a locker, a list of names of interested students will be kept and you will be advised when and if one becomes available. As soon as we are able to increase the amount of lockers, we will do so. The new lockers will be $65 each to hire, with a $15 refund at the end of hire, irrespective of whether that falls during the year or the end of the year. All lockers will have a padlock provided by the school. Students do not supply their own padlock. If the school padlock is removed and lost, the locker will then be locked by the school with another school padlock and if the student wishes to continue hiring the locker, they will be required to pay a further $15 for the replacement padlock. If the student chooses to no longer hire the locker, it will be re-hired to the next person on the wait list and no refund with be forthcoming to the original hirer due to loss of the padlock. These measures and costs are being put in place for the following reasons:

The damage sustained over the years to our lockers has been considerable, which our own students have been responsible for. The ongoing maintenance of these lockers was very costly and almost impossible to sustain due to the blatant and continued vandalism.

The new lockers are more robust, but are also much more costly. However, we are optimistic that the students will have greater regard for this new resource and treat these lockers with respect and care, as outlined in the Agreement that they and yourself will be required to sign prior to hire.

Further information will be made available as the new lockers are released early in 2016.

Regards

Heather Butler
