Royal Menehune - Grounds

HNU Energy - Grounds

Word from the Executive Director

Ka Lima O Maui is typically known for our employment pro-grams but a well-kept secret is our Medicaid Waiver Services. Currently 24 participants are enrolled in this program that focus-es on independent living skills. An individual plan is developed consisting of specific goals that the participant would like to work on with the assistance of a Direct Support Worker. Ka Li-ma offers the following Waiver services: Adult Day Health 1, Personal Assistance Habilitation 1 and 2, Respite Services and Supported Employment. Keri and her staff do a wonderful job in bringing unique individualized plans to increase self-reliance in our participants. One of the great advantages of the Ka Lima waiver program is that if employment is a goal, they have direct access to a multitude of employment programs already in place. In fact, 10 of our waiver participants also work part time at jobs they obtained from Ka Lima’s employment services. As evident in this newsletter, the Medicaid Waiver program is filled with fun activities and outings. Come visit us anytime or call 244-

5996 to schedule a visit.

Congratulations to the following for staying healthy during the past quarter!!!

The Buzz Around Ka Lima

Hyundai Tournament of Champions

The PGA tour kicks off its season at Kapalua’s Plantation Course, January 8-12, 2015 with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. This prestigious tournament features only the champions from the prior season all vying for their share of the $5.7 million purse. Thursday’s Pro-Am is FREE with tickets starting at $15 for the professional competition Friday-Monday, January 9-12. Tickets can be purchased online at pga-tour.com/Hyundai and will be sold on island starting November 1st at the Kapalua Golf Shops, the Honolua Store and select ABC stores. Free public parking and shuttles will be available at the Honua Kai Resort (at the north end of Kaanapali). And remember, since 1999 the Tournament of Champions has helped to raise nearly $5 million for its designated beneficiaries and worthy community organizations such as Ka Li-ma O Maui. For further information call 808-665-9160.

54 Holes of Golf

On August 1st and 2nd a group of 12 golfers got to-gether and played 54 Holes at Kaanapali golf and Ka-palua Golf. Five of those players were from the Thayer family and for that reason we refer to this event as the “Thayer Event”. Like Matt Thayer, the organizer, said “It is fun to see the next generation

coming along and being part of the event.” This year marked the 9th consecutive year for this unique fundraiser and we look forward to celebrating the 10th one next year. A special thank you to all the participants and to Kapalua and Kaanapali Golf for their support of this event.

The Grand Wailea and the Hyatt Regency Maui recently donated some used equipment to Ka Lima O Maui’s grounds keep-ing crew.

Many thanks to Jim Heid, Director of Landscaping at the Grand Wailea for donating a couple of string trimmers and back-pack blowers for our crews to use. Last year, they also donated a long bed electric utility vehicle, a riding mower and several golf carts. The long bed cart will be used to remove trash at Kanaha Beach Park and one of the golf carts is being used to maintain the Wailuku Police Station grounds.

From the West side, Ryne Ushigome, Director of Landscap-ing at the Hyatt Regency Maui donated a trencher and back hoe attachments. The attachments will fit onto the skid steer tractor that the Hyatt donated a few years ago. Ryne also donated a flail mower that has been put to good use!

At the end of the month, the group also had the opportunity to visit the Assistant Dogs of Hawaii. There, they got to pet and groom the younger dogs and learn about the program. They also saw a video displaying the dogs’ ability to help others and a glimpse of a few beginner tricks the dogs started off with. We hope to continue visiting the dogs in the near future.

We are excited to have these great additions to our Waiver team!!!! We welcomed participant Tyrone Edelhertz in Au-gust. Tyrone is a talented artist who enjoys dancing hula, swimming, and work-ing in the yard. Tyrone is a huge American Idol and Ryan Seacrest fan!!

Staff additions this quarter were; Nancy Edelhertz and Jenie Espe-jo. Nancy, Tyrone’s mother is an RN and does volunteer work for Hospice. In her spare time she en-joys making collages, sewing, gar-dening, and writing.

Jenie is a massage therapist, beautician and mother of 3. On her spare time she enjoys singing, and swimming. Jenie has a true passion for helping people.

We are so happy to have Tyrone, Nancy, and Jenie on our team!!

For the month of July, the group had an exciting out-ing to Makawao to watch the annual Rodeo and cele-brate the 4th of July! Yeehaw! They saw the pan-iolos of Maui in action. They enjoyed watching and

cheering for others during the calf roping!

In August, the group continued with their cooking classes. Every week the group rotates to be the chef of the day. The chef is the person who decides everything from choos-ing the recipe to desig-nating tasks to their fellow cooking class peers. Together they are able to cook yummy meals successfully!

In September, the waiver program had their first theatrical production lead by Eugene Perreira and Rhonda Whets-tine! Everyone en-joyed the fun and ex-citing spirits of the waiver program as they acted out the scenes of The Teen-age Mutant Ninja

Turtles! With the help and coordination of everyone, the play was given two thumbs up!

How to Succeed at Work

The How to Succeed at Work class uses games and other activi-ties to illustrate job performance and employment seeking skills. Pictured are Warren Pladera, Desiree Esperanza, Whitney Caba-ni, and Chester Santos-Bras playing a table game of Job Leads.

The class meets three days per week in a new classroom in the lower floor of the Cameron Center. The current session began on September 3rd and will conclude in December. At that time par-ticipants will be placed in community internships for four to eight weeks.

Classes up to now have included exploration of common work-place practices, effective workplace relationships and worker rights and responsibilities. The course is now transitioning into the job seeking phase including electronic searches, applications, resumes and interview skills.
