Notes from the Acting President Andy Anderson

Election time will soon be on us and it is time to

think about who should be in the new executive.

We need Vice Presidents who are willing and

able to step up and take over if necessary, Also

perhaps, new faces in the other chairs. New

faces sometimes come up with new ideas that

enhance things. Each chairman should also

select a co-chair to assist him or her. This ensures

continuity in case of sickness or vacation time.

Things are going reasonably well, we are not

quite holding our own financially, and part of the

problem is the elevator. However, we will try to

address that during our Poppy meeting coming

up.

I would like to thank everyone who helped out

when our President had to take a leave of

absence. It made things much easier for me.

Volunteers Wanted! Steven Burr

Volunteers are being sought to assist RCL Branch

99 with our various programs including the

Charity Bingo, Canteen, Public Relations, Youth

Education, Entertainment, Sports, Colour Party

etc. Please contact the Committee Chair listed

on page 12 in the area that you are interested

in. Without your support RCL Branch 99 cannot

continue promoting Remembrance, supporting

Veterans and the various local charities. Please get involved!

Membership Mary Presley

I hope that everyone had a very happy Easter

and that spring is not far behind. We now have

392 paid up members for 2016. There were five

new Comrades initiated at our March 4th,

General Meeting. We extend a heartfelt

welcome to these Comrades & invite them to

take part in Legion Events.

On March 14th, Branch 99 welcomed new members

(left to right) Diana Boire, Dale Holland, Maxine

Holland, Sandor Kovacs and Verda Rochon.

Did You Know

The word "curfew" comes from the French

phrase "couvre-feu", which means "cover the

fire". It was used to describe the time of blowing

out all lamps and candles. It was later adopted

into Middle English as "curfeu", which later

became the modern "curfew". In the early

American colonies homes had no real fireplaces

so a fire was built in the center of the room. In

order to make sure a fire did not get out of

control during the night it was required that, by

an agreed upon time, all fires would be covered

with a clay pot called-a "curfew".

Canadian Trivia

The man who might have been King of England,

Robert Wood born 1792 to Prince Edward (son of

King George III) and his common-law wife Mme

Julie St. Laurent at Quebec, would have

become the reigning monarch in place of

Queen Victoria had his parents been married.

Dedication Ceremony – Eastminister United

On Saturday April 9th, Eastminister United Church will

be conducting a Dedication Ceremony as part of the

99th Anniversary of the Battle for Vimy Ridge. All are

invited, the service begins at 11:00 am. Please see

the letter on the following page for more info.

Humour Haunt

Mary walked into a bridal shop one day and

told the salesclerk that she was looking for a wedding gown for her fourth wedding.

"Of course, madam," replied the salesclerk.

"Exactly what type and colour dress are you

looking for?"

The bride-to-be said, "A long frilly white dress

with a veil."

"Please don't take this the wrong way, madam, but such dresses are usually more fitting for

the first-time bride who is more innocent in the ways of life, if you get my meaning."

"WELL!" replied Mary, in a huff and a little peeved at the clerk's directness. "I can assure

you that a white gown would be quite

appropriate. Believe it or not, despite all my marriages, I remain as innocent as a first-time

bride.

"You see, my first husband was so excited

about our wedding, he died from a heart attack as we were checking into our honeymoon

hotel.

"As for my second husband, we got into such

a terrible fight in the limo on our way to our

honeymoon hotel that we had that wedding

annulled immediately and never spoke to

each other again."

"What about your third husband?" asked the

sales clerk.

"That one was an NDP politician," said Mary.

"Every night for four years, he just sat on

the edge of the bed and told me how good it

was going to be, but nothing ever

happened."
