DEAR PARENTS, STAFF, STUDENTS & FRIENDS

It has been an action-packed first week welcoming our new students and staff whilst joining with students, staff and families as they form new friendships and catch up with old friends. I can assure everyone that 2012 will provide our students with a diverse range of high quality learning experiences, allowing them to develop as great people who are able to make our world an even better place. OUTSTANDING YEAR 12 RESULTS As you can see from the front page of our newsletter, we are thrilled with the results achieved by our Class of 2011. Consequently, we can continue to be justifiably proud of Frankston High School‘s outstanding reputation as a high performing academic school of excellence.

Highlights other than those featured on our front page include:- 21% of students received an A+ or A grade in their assessments.

7% of students achieved study scores over 40, which

places Frankston High School equal 9th of Metropolitan Government Co-educational and Non-select Entry schools.

A median study score of 31 which indicates a typical

student at Frankston High School has achieved study scores above the state average. This was the top result for all Government Schools on the Mornington Peninsula.

The many students who were able to reach their full

potential as a result of their commitment to their studies and the outstanding teaching at Frankston High School.

The dedication of our outstanding Senior teachers who

generously supported our students to achieve such excellent results.

These results reaffirm Frankston High School as one of the leading schools in the state. UNIVERSITY PLACEMENTS It is a great pleasure to report that following the first round university offers, 95% of our Year 12 students who applied for tertiary study have received an offer. We anticipate that after second round offers, 100% of these students will be proceeding with tertiary courses. This is an outstanding result. Most of these students received their first or second choice. The class of 2011 has been a great inspiration to us all, demonstrating that you can achieve your dreams if you strive to do your best always (Optima Semper!). All students who are progressing onwards with further learning whether by attending a tertiary institution or embarking upon an apprenticeship/traineeship will be assured of a successful, prosperous future because of their passion for lifelong learning. Our students have been inspired to become lifelong learners due to our extremely talented, dedicated teachers who have equipped them with skills to embrace the learning challenges the future holds. Also I would like to thank our parents who have been instrumental in supporting their children in understanding the importance of education and have encouraged them to be actively involved in the wonderful educational opportunities our school has to offer. This combination of outstanding staff, supportive parents and excellent students has enabled our Year 12 class of 2011 to realise their potential. Congratulations to all students in the Year 12 class of 2011. We wish you every success for the future.

WELCOME TO NEW STUDENTS, PARENTS AND FRIENDS Welcome to all new students and their families. You are joining a wonderful school with exceptional teachers who will support you to achieve your best. Frankston High provides a learning community where we all respect and care for each other, always working cooperatively as a team. In addition, our school provides you with magnificent facilities and resources which are yours to use to maximise your learning opportunities. You are among friends who care and support each other. Please don‘t be afraid to ask questions, and students and staff alike will enthusiastically respond to ensure you feel welcome. Staff, students and parents are eager to help you make a successful transition into our school. A MULTI CAMPUS SCHOOL Frankston High School is a multi-campus school. We have two Campus Principals who have responsibility for making decisions regarding the students on their campus. The Principal of the Senior School (VCE Campus) is Ms Helen Wilson and the Principal of the Junior School (Year 7-10 Campus) is Ms Cathy Hogg. HELP ALWAYS AVAILABLE Frankston High School has a commitment to providing all the care and support necessary for each student to do their best and achieve the highest possible learning outcomes. It is important that when families have concerns about their children they contact the relevant staff members immediately to ensure a quick supportive response. I encourage families to maintain open communication with staff members to ensure each student is provided with optimal support. The most appropriate staff members to talk with when you have specific concerns are the classroom teachers, then Assistant/Year Level Coordinators, then Sub-School Coordinators. These are the staff members who have a thorough understanding of the needs of the students in their care. Decisions regarding students are made in partnership with parents and students with careful consideration of what is in the best interests of the students. In addition, we are fortunate to have a Student Wellbeing Coordinator (Mrs Kirsten Bakker) and two Chaplains (Mr Matt Parker and Ms Linda Hughes) who are available to help students and their families with welfare related concerns, and also a Careers Counsellor (Mrs Carolyn Walsh), who is available to counsel students and families in relation to exploring career options. JAMES DAL BEN: TOP IN STATE: VCE MUSIC PERFORMANCE On the last day of school we were informed that our Year 12 graduate student James Dal Ben has been accepted into Top Acts. This phenomenal achievement tells us that James is the top in the state in terms of VCE music performance in guitar. We look forward to celebrating with James as he performs at Top Acts with other exemplary fellow musicians from across the state. James successfully auditioned with fellow student Harrison Wade to complete a 13th year in music at the prestigious Generations in Jazz Academy in Mount Gambier this year. This will provide James and Harrison with the opportunity to showcase their talents across Australia. Both James and Harrison aspire to pursue music careers in the future. We wish them all the very best as they live their dreams.

RITCHIES I encourage all parents to patronise Ritchies Supermarkets and access a Community Benefits Card, nominating Frankston High School as your preferred beneficiary. Each time you shop at Ritchies you will be actively contributing to your child‘s education by helping us continue to provide high quality resources throughout the school. WINE AND CHEESE EVENING I look forward to meeting our Year 7 parents at the Wine and Cheese Evening on Tuesday 6 March at 7.00 pm in the school hall on the 7 - 10 Campus, and also parents of students new to the school from other year levels on Tuesday 28 February at 7.00 pm in the Junior Resource Centre. I can recommend these nights to new parents, as an informal, social get together with staff and other parents in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. In conclusion, I extend my best wishes to everyone as we embark on another challenging, stimulating year of teaching and learning, where I am sure we will be regularly celebrating the many achievements of our extraordinary students. A special congratulations to Haydn Barr who received a perfect study score of 50 in Further Maths with Miss Aimee Taylor, and Laura Scott who received a perfect study score of 50 in Outdoor and Environmental Studies with Miss Danielle Mates. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding support and opportunities given to our Year 12 students by the Year 11 and Year 12 Co-ordinators, the Careers Coordinator, the Chaplain and the Senior Resource Centre. OUTSTANDING VCAL RESULTS Congratulations to our Year 12 VCAL students on their excellent achievements throughout the year. We wish these students all the best as they embark on their career pathway. I would like to acknowledge the excellent support and leadership provided by Mrs Carolyn Walsh (the VCAL Co-ordinator in 2011) and her team of VCAL teachers. CONGRATULATIONS TO KIMBERLY PELLOSIS – FRANKSTON’S YOUNG CITIZEN OF THE YEAR Mr Albiston and I had the pleasure on Australia Day of attending the Frankston City Council Australia Day awards, where one of our Year 12 students from last year, Kimberly Pellosis, was named Young Citizen of the Year.

Special guests on the day included Australia Day Ambassador and footy legend Tom Hafey, Mr Geoff Shaw MP, State Member for Frankston and Mr Jude Perera, State Member for Cranbourne, Ms Donna Bauer MP, State, Member for Carrum and The Hon Bruce Billson MP, Federal Member for Dunkley.

Kimberly is well deserving of this award. She is an outstanding student of impeccable character and integrity. Kimberly epitomises the school values and motto ―Optima Semper‖ – best always. This is a prestigious award and was decided by a panel of leaders in the Frankston community.

Kimberly is highly committed to giving back to her community (both within the school and the wider community). She has been involved in a variety of programs, including a key role in the School's Student Leadership Council. She is a member of the School's Vision Generation Group, a member of the Executive Council for the Victorian Student Representative Council and a leader of the International Committee. As Leader of the Environmental Committee Kimberly has motivated and inspired students within the school and the wider community to implement sustainability and environmental programs and initiatives.

Kimberly was a finalist in last year's VCAA VCE Achiever awards.

Kimberly plans on studying Science at The University of Melbourne this year and hopes it leads to a career in research particularly in Environmental Science. Kimberly has also been awarded a scholarship to Trinity College at The University of Melbourne. Mayor Brian Cunial said: "Australia Day is a time when we honour people who demonstrate the diversity and depth of personal achievement.'' ''Kimberly Pellosis is an extraordinary woman who epitomises what living in Frankston City is all about."

VCE SEASON OF EXCELLENCE The VCE Season of Excellence is a four month festival showcasing outstanding senior secondary student work from Victorian schools; the festival is managed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Congratulations to James Dal Ben who has been accepted into Top Acts due to his outstanding music performance as part of this festival. Congratulations also to Astrid Cauchy, Ben Leyland and Jenna Greenhill who were shortlisted for Top Designs for their work in media studies. IMPORTANT SENIOR SCHOOL PARENT INFORMATION NIGHTS We have two very important parent information nights that we would like you to note in your calendars. The first is a parent information night on Monday 20 February in the senior resource centre at 7.00 pm. Issues such as VCE and VCAL requirements, assessment, study scores, tertiary selection and parent support will be discussed. The evening is tailored to assist parents of all Year 11 and Year 12 students undertaking VCE and VCAL. The second is a parent information night on Monday 27 February in the Senior Resource Centre at 7.00 pm. This is a session by Elevate Education on study skills with a focus on how parents can assist their children study. Elevate Education present seminars to students, teachers and parents Australia-wide. The feedback we have received from other schools has been outstanding, and we have extended our study skills seminars this year. Elevate Education presented to teachers on Wednesday 1 February on study skills and addressed Year 12 students on ―Study Sensei‖ and ―Time Management‖. These parent information nights are invaluable and I look forward to seeing parents at these two information nights. YEAR 12 MOTIVATION DAY All Year 12 students will be attending a Motivation Day on Tuesday 14 February at Monash University, Peninsula Campus. Students are to meet at the venue at 8.00 am and will be dismissed from the venue at 3.15 pm. Full school uniform must be worn. Thank you to Mrs Granger and Ms Challenger for the organisation of this day. IMPRESSIVE START TO THE YEAR It has been an excellent start to the 2012 school year. The students are motivated and focused and it is pleasing to hear so many positive comments from teachers on their classes. Teachers have been very impressed with the students‘ work ethic in completing homework set during the early commencement week. Students in the senior school should be completing 2-3 hours of homework each night. Students should also be consistently revising their class notes on a regular basis in preparation for assessments. Overall, it has been an outstanding commencement to the term and I sincerely thank all teachers, students and parents for all of their efforts.

I look forward to the year ahead as we continue on our

journey of learning, reflecting the school‘s vision

―together we become purposeful learners‖.

STUDENT INSURANCE Ms Carolyn Florance - Business Manager

Parents are reminded that DEECD and Frankston High School do not provide personal accident insurance for

students. Parents and Guardians are responsible for the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including transport costs.

Student accident insurance policies are available for purchase through JUA Underwriting (ph 9909 7480).

Parents are also reminded that DEECD and Frankston High School do not provide insurance for personal possessions of any description, including motor vehicles, for damage or theft at school or on the school grounds.

STUDENT SUPERVISION BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL

Please be aware teachers are on duty in the grounds on the 7 -10 Campus from 8.30 am before school and again

until 3.40 pm after school. On the Senior Campus supervision is from 8.00 am before school and until 3.40 pm after school. It is advisable for students to arrive

at school after supervision begins unless they have scheduled class time or a planned activity. Please note some buses leave after the conclusion of yard

duty and students are expected to behave in a responsible manner when in school uniform before and after school. The public often contact Frankston High

School to comment on the excellent behaviour of students in public areas.

STUDENT BELONGINGS Students are advised not to bring expensive belongings to school other than equipment required for learning. Frankston High School Council does not have the authority to reimburse parents or replace students‘ personal belongings that are lost or stolen. For security purposes parents please remind your children to always ensure personal belongings are placed in their lockers and then locked with their padlock.

DROP OFF ZONE

As we are all aware, we have very limited parking in the Frankston High School grounds for parents picking up their children at the end of the school day. If you organise to meet your children in the drop off zone and they are not waiting for you when you arrive, please do not block the passage of cars trying to get through. If all of the unofficial spaces to the sides of the drop off zone are occupied when you arrive, please continue through the centre of the drop off zone, turn left out of the school into Foot Street, proceed down to the roundabout at Baileyana Street and then do a loop back up and around the Towerhill Road roundabout and back into the drop off zone. Thank you for your cooperation with this request. Our preference has always been for parents to park in one of the side streets surrounding the school and wait for children to come to you. Thank you very much to the many parents who already do this. It is much safer for students to be dropped off to school

at the gate of Baileyana Street and then for them to walk across the oval.

WELLBEING TEAM Ms Kirsten Bakker

Student Wellbeing Coordinator The Student Wellbeing Team oversees the wellbeing of

students attending Frankston High School. It is a confidential service available to all students in Years 7 – 12 for counselling, providing advice to students when troubled, and to consult with parents and staff

members.

The Student Wellbeing Coordinator also coordinates and

liaises with welfare personnel, provides access to further educational support, financial support schemes, and access and referral to services outside the school. The Wellbeing Coordinator at Frankston High School is

Ms Kirsten Bakker (available Monday - Thursday). The other members of the Wellbeing Team are the School Chaplains. They are available to students, staff and

parents to provide pastoral care, counselling and many school programs. The School Chaplains at Frankston High School are Mr Matt Parker (available full time) and Ms Linda Hughes (available Monday - Wednesday, and

Friday).

This term the wellbeing team will be re-commencing the Breakfast Club program for Years 7 - 10, every Monday

and Friday at 8:00 am in Room 16. Lunchtime programs are also being offered by various staff members of the school which include games in Room 50 at Monday

lunchtime, Swimming Pool is open each day, Weights Room open Tuesday and Thursday and Planet Shakers Program every Friday on the basketball courts.

Should you require the support of any member of the Wellbeing Team please contact the General Office who will then be able to direct your enquiry.

You can assist the Wellbeing Team by donating any second hand text books or uniform to the General Office.

WATER MACHINE Mr Brendan McKinnon

Sustainability Coordinator Installation of the Aqua Fill ‗n‘ Go water system occurred over the recent school break in the canteen areas of both campuses.

The systems have been put in place with one main reason in mind, to curb plastic bottle use.

The Environmental Committee of 2011 identified plastic bottles as being a significant environmental concern and took action in identifying possible solutions for the school. The Aqua Fill ‗n‘ Go water system was one result of that process.

The Aqua Fill ‗n‘ Go system looks like a fairly regular vending machine, however a high tech filtration system hidden behind the usual façade makes the water provided by the machine some of the purest available – far more pure than bottled water provided by soft drink companies.

The machine has no cup or bottle dispenser; in an effort to make plastic bottles a thing of the past users will need a 600 ml or 1 litre bottle of their own that can be refilled and reused over and over again.

The water provided by the machine is also far cheaper than regular bottled water at $1.00 a litre. Students will be able to use coins as normal to make a purchase, or in coming weeks there will be a recharge card system made available. A dollar amount placed on the card will give a student access to the machine until the amount on the card is exhausted. At this point the card can be recharged or ‗topped up‘. The card can only be used for the Aqua Fill ‗n‘ Go system.

Further in keeping with environmental principles held by Frankston High School, the Aqua Fill ‗n‘ Go systems have been de-lamped, reducing their energy consumption.

Twenty percent of money made by the machines is fed back into the school.

Some notes about plastic bottles:

Plastic bottles use a lot of fossil fuels and pollute the

environment.

All Australian-made water bottles — brands including Mount Franklin, Pump, Peats Ridge or Cool Ridge — are manufactured entirely with virgin plastic, or PET, from non-renewable oil and gas.

If you fill a plastic bottle a quarter of the way up with oil

that is how much oil was needed to make the bottle.

Only 1 in 6 plastic bottles purchased makes it to the recycling bin.

The rest end up at the rubbish tip. Landfills are drowning

in plastic waste. 60 million plastic bottles end up in landfills each day.

Plastic Bottles take 1000 years to disintegrate.

WORLD CHALLENGE: ACCLIMATIZATION PHASE

Glen Clancy - Year 12 Late in 2011 a group of students and staff left Frankston High School to embark on ‗a journey of life‘ by travelling to the developing countries of Cambodia and Vietnam.

While the first few days in Cambodia were spent becoming accustomed to the sights, sounds and smells of this extraordinary country, it was also the time that all members of the group became familiar with the responsibilities of budgeting for the group‘s food, accommodation and transportation needs. The thing that struck the group as we touched down was the wall of heat and humidity which hit us – it took some getting used to.

During this ‗acclimatization phase‘, we explored the city of Phnom Penh and experienced the rich culture, eating food from street vendors as stray dogs walked between our legs! We visited the Royal Palace, enjoying the spectacular architecture, and were incredibly moved when we visited S21 and the ‗Killing Fields‘, gaining an even deeper understanding of the human atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge.

There will be more articles about our world challenge trip in future issues of the newsletter.

TEMPORARY HELIPAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED

AT DELACOMBE PARK

Peninsula Health will be constructing a multi-storey car parking complex at Frankston Hospital. In order to build the complex, the Ambulance Victoria helipad will be temporarily relocated to Delacombe Park for a maximum period of 12 months (behind the Frankston South Recreation Centre). On average the helipad is used less than once a week to transport critical patients and extremely ill babies to city hospitals. The infrequent nature of these flights will mean minimal disruption to the Delacombe Park area. Construction of the temporary helipad has commenced where an access road and additional infrastructure will be put in place to make the area safe for the Air Ambulance to land. The helipad will return to Frankston Hospital once the first stage of the car parking complex is complete and the park will return to its normal use. Parents are requested to inform their children that they are required to stay well away from the helipad site at all times. Please note, Helicopters create much noise and a decent breeze upon landing and taking off.

SEEKING HOST FAMILIES Mrs Anne Thomson

Community Liaison Coordinator We have our annual visit from our sister schools in Osaka happening again in March this year and we are urgently seeking 48 host families from Frankston High School to host these Japanese students. They are 16 years old and do not need their own room. Your child does not have to study Japanese to host a student. Past host families have found the experience rewarding and enjoyable. A fee of $20 a day will be paid to each family to contribute towards guest expenses. The Osaka dates are as follows: Osaka High School (Co-ed): 14 March - 21 March (7 nights) Osaka Seikei High School (all girls) : 22 March - 1 April (10 nights) Please email Anne Thomson [email protected] or

phone 0409 835 541 for further information.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS WITH

CHILDREN COMMENCING YEAR 7 IN 2012

Mr Glenn Davey - Finance Officer EDUCATION MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCE (EMA): The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) is provided by the Victorian Government to low-income families to help with education-related costs.

If you have a child under 16, and hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card, or are a foster parent, you may be eligible to receive the EMA. The allowance is split evenly between the parent and the school, and is paid in two instalments, one in March and one in August. The parent portion is often used for uniforms and excursions, while the school portion may be used for expenses such as textbooks, stationery and special programs. You can elect to have the parent portion of the EMA paid into your nominated bank account or receive a cheque.

In 2012, the total annual amount is $235.00 for primary students and $470.00 for secondary students – these amounts are split evenly between the parents/guardians and the school.

EMA forms can be collected from the Finance Office and need to be completed by 28 February 2012 to ensure

your entitled payment is received.

MATHS AT FRANKSTON HIGH SCHOOL IN 2012

Mr Andrew Watson - Head of Mathematics MYMATHS ONLINE (YEAR 7-12) The school has again this year subscribed to the web based tutorial service www.mymathsonline.com.au The site allows students to access this fantastic resource both at school and home to review and consolidate important concepts covered in class. Teachers may also use the site to set and monitor the completion of online homework at particular times during the year. Log-in and password details will be available from classroom teachers shortly. CAS CALCULATORS (YEAR 10-12) It is vitally important that all Year 10-12 students have a TiNspire CAS calculator to start the year with. The only exception is Year 11 Foundation Maths students. The school has organised a discounted price of $185.00 from Calculator King for the new colour screen model (CX). This calculator can be purchased by visiting their web site www.calculatorking.com.au, and searching for the calculator (Code TINSCX). Enter the Coupon Code FRANKSTON at the online checkout for the discounted price. Alternatively contact the store directly on 9696 3366. The school has a limited number of the older model Ti-Nspire ClickPad calculators that may be purchased second hand for $90.00. While these calculators are out of official warranty, the school will be able to provide a replacement should the calculator‘s operating system fail during the student‘s time at the school. The funds raised from this scheme will be used to purchase newer calculators for class sets to be used with Years 7-9 students as this tool becomes even more important in years to come. Please contact myself or your child‘s classroom teacher for more information regarding the calculator. MATH MATES (YEAR 7 & 8) We are continuing the Math Mates homework program at Year 7 & 8. All students are required to submit the weekly skills consolidation sheet with a parent or guardian signature. This year for the first time, there will be a formal class test on these skills at the end of each term. HOMEWORK HELP AND SENIOR MATHS TUTORIAL ASSISTANCE (YEAR 7 & 12) Experienced maths teachers are on hand at the following times to help students outside of class hours with their mathematics: Junior School – Monday and Thursday, 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm, in the Junior Resource Centre. Senior School – Monday to Thursday, Lunchtime, Room 307 Senior School – Year 12 Math Methods Enhancement class, Friday Lunchtime, Room 307.

Sunday 18 March 8.00 am - 12.00 pm

Your help is needed please!

On Sunday 18 March the Grounds Committee is holding a working bee from 8:00 am until 12 noon. We are aiming to try and plant up the garden area around the new Science building on Senior Campus as well as

finish some small painting jobs to help spruce up the 7 - 10 Campus. Our working bees are extraordinarily productive. The work completed makes such a difference to the grounds and facilities. The participants are always very friendly and welcoming. It is also a wonderful

opportunity to meet other parents in the Frankston High School Community. The school has some gardening tools but it is always helpful if working bee members can bring their own as

well. We will be mulching, planting as well as general tidying up of the grounds. Wheel barrows, shovels, secateurs and clippers would be particularly useful.

At the end of the working bee there will be a light thank you lunch provided for all the people who have donated their time to assist in this activity.

Please register on line at www.fhs.vic.edu.au if you are able to attend the working bee. Alternatively telephone the General Office, or email [email protected] by Thursday 15 March 2012.

Thanks Lee Anne Smith
