Year 9 Bogong Ski Trip Week 1 of Term 3 was a particularly memorable time for 18 Year of our Year 9 students. The return to school

began with a 6:30am start and a long 8 hour bus drive to Bogong village. Students were fortunate enough

to experience a wide variety of weather conditions and for some students it was their first experience in the

snow.

Students spent their first day on the mountain cross-country skiing, and finding themselves familiar with the

most important part…. STOPPING! Although cloudy, it didn’t snow and on occasions the students were able

to see a bit of the scenery.

The following day the temperature reached a massive high of -2, and the snow came down. Not deterred

by this the students spent the day honing their skills on the downhill slopes. Luckily enough the final day on

the mountain saw the clouds clear away, and at a balmy 0 degrees there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. All

students used this to their advantage and spent the day swooshing down the slopes.

All 18 students need to be commended on their exemplary behaviour, and many thanks to the parents who

made the early trip to the bus stop. Many good times were had, as well as a number of new friends from

made from Singapore, Rainbow College and Mallacoota College.

On Wednesday we hosted a meeting of the Black Ranges School Sport coordinators. Once again there will be changes to School Sport next year as the Divisions will need to be re-aligned to the DEECD new regions. The Department is reducing the number of regions from nine to four, so there will need to be changes to the way the school sport is run to accomdate this. We will keep you posted.

It’s time to start thinking about your subject

selections for 2012 and 2013.

Now is the time to investigate your options for

the future – for year 11 & 12, Employment and

Tertiary options.

All year 10 and 11 students will be involved in

the selection process.

Important Resources

2013 and beyond VCE Handbook

ATAR 2012 information ( available in the Careers room)

OZJAC, Job Guide and other careers information.

Current VCE teachers and students.

Parents, Relations, Prospective employers……… MIPS advocate, SELF teachers. Mr Vague, Mrs Hill

Your course selections are indicators of your

subject choices and should be as accurate as

possible listing the units in order of importance.

e.g. prerequisites for tertiary courses /

employment should be first.

Further decisions will have to be made once

these initial selections are processed, the blocks

for 2013 organised and staffing allocations are

known.

Counselling sessions in SELF and with Mr Vague

can be organised during terms 3 and 4 to assist

you with your choices.

NOTE; Students must ensure that their course will

satisfy the VCE requirements.

Students study 6 units per semester in year 11

and 5 unit 3 & 4 sequences in year 12.

Some students may choose to study a year 3 & 4

unit in year 11. If you are considering this option

please discuss it with Mr Vague or Mrs Hill.

University Open Days for 2012

Check out http://www.opendays.com.au/ for a complete list of Open Days for all of the Universities and TAFE providers in Australia.

Visiting a university, TAFE or College on an Open Day is the perfect opportunity to get the answers to all the questions you have about the various degrees, qualifications, programs, study options, departments, accommodation, living costs and much, much more.

An Open Day is a great way for you to get a feel for a place that will become your home away from home for the next few years. I have included some tips for tackling Open Days.

Five tips for tackling open days

For aspiring higher education students the August/September period can only mean one thing: OPEN DAYS! Whether you’re in Year 10, Year 12 or even a mature age student looking to expand your qualifications, open days are a fun way to gain a taste of university life, find out the information you need and narrow down your options.

1) MAKE A PLAN

With so many open days happening at once you will need to plan well in advance, especially if you’re considering attending multiple open days or need to book travel and accommodation. Note that a few institutions hold their open days earlier than usual.

Narrow down your options to make a shortlist of the institutions you are most interested in so you don’t tire yourself out attending every single open day. Once you have your shortlist you can check out the relevant open day dates here. Note that some institutions’ open day dates will conflict, which may mean that you need to conduct more research to decide which open day you would prefer to attend. Also note that institutions with multiple campuses generally hold campus open days on different dates, so if your preferred course is available at more than one campus it is a good idea to check out each one to find out which environment you prefer.

2) COME PREPARED

You will need to make a schedule for each open day so you know what time you need to be there, what you want to see and where you need to go. Print the institutions’ open day program from their website and add to your schedule any information sessions you would like to attend (such as course and entry pathway seminars), noting time and location. Also schedule time to check out facilities you are interested in (such as student accommodation). Find out parking and public transport information in advance. Bring a family member or friend to keep you company and give you a second opinion.

3) TALK TO THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Don’t be afraid to speak up at information sessions; this is a life-changing decision so make sure you don’t leave with questions unanswered. Write down important information and grab pamphlets so you have the information handy when you’re finalising your preferences. It might pay to write down a list of questions in advance for each information session and make a list of things you want to find out about, such as student exchange or clubs. Student guides will be milling about, so ask them questions too. Not only will they clue you in on all the best spots on campus, they will be able to honestly answer all your questions about what life at the institution is like from a student’s perspective.

4) EXPLORE THE CAMPUS

Check out the facilities that the campus offers and explore the buildings you will most likely be studying in. This is especially important for students studying courses that require them to use special lab or computer facilities as an integral part of their studies, such as design, IT, health sciences or science. Check out the accommodation options available. This is a good chance to see what they actually look like and how close they are to the institution and the city. Look beyond all the hype and balloons. Ask yourself: can I really see myself here? You want the university to have an atmosphere that will make you want to spend time there, rather than just attend your classes and head straight home. Whether you’re after masses of landscaped lawns or on-campus galleries, gyms and cafés, it is important to choose a campus that suits you and will provide the experience you want. Check out your transport options and do a trial run. If the campus is within driving distance, is there plenty of parking? Is it free or does it require a permit? If public transport is the way to go, figure out which forms are available, how frequent it is and which route to take.

5) ENJOY YOURSELF

Make a day of it with your friends and family. Once you’ve found out what you need to know, enjoy the day!

Any questions see Mr Vague in the Careers Office.

Prep/One Much better week this week, students are settling down to work and are playing well in the playground. We are still having a couple of the preps going into the high school area. Please talk to you child and explain that it is out of bounds in the high school, it is to keep the preps safe. Everyone is enjoying learning about the Olympics. We will be cooking this week so remember to bring in $2.00. Joylene One / Two A great last week once again! Students have loved our Maths activities. A lot of what we do in Maths is game related and always using hands on materials to reinforce the concept we are learning. It's great to see all students work at their individual levels. Some students are working in the thousands! We have been busy learning how to write descriptive paragraphs and stories. Some students are using interesting vocabulary in their writing. We have been learning nouns and adjectives. We have been preparing for the athletic sports and getting fit each day by running, playing tunnel ball, hurdles, shot put etc. Please return portfolios if you haven't already. Excursion money can be sent to school ASAP, and this week the cost of cooking will be $2. We will be cooking chocolate truffles. It has been great to have Sheri Nicholls work with our grade each Monday. She has a daughter in Grade 5 and has recently relocated from Northern Territory. The students are enjoying her teaching and the open ended activities she is providing. Mrs Wills

discussing about how the Australia teams are going.

Have a great week

Mrs. N and Mrs. L

Year 5/6

Fantastic week this week. We have been learning about

Japan and the students are really enjoying this.

They have been working hard in math and are surprising

me on how much they are retaining from last semester. We

have been learning about Time, analogue, 24 hours and

calendar work. Practicing our decimals and fractions

additions, subtractions and working towards equivalent

fractions. As well as keeping our pace up with addition,

division and subtraction worksheets trying to improve our

speed.

Writing stories and learning about using time and place in

our writing to make our writing more interesting. My Place

is going well and students are producing some good work.

They really enjoy learning about Australian History and we

have many good discussions on the past.

Tolerance still plays an important part of our practicing

value at school. We work in collaborative groups and

students must remember to be tolerant of each other and

to listen to each other.

Students of the week are Cody Bell (fantastic in cooking),

Emma, Courtney and Caleb
