Have you ever wondered why your child is not improving as much as you thought even after going to tuition? Why does your child have to spend so many hours memorizing something for a test even after going to tuition?

The answer lies in the understanding how your child’s brain works and how you can improve it for better performance in learning and life. In short, we are talking about Cognitive Skills. So, what are Cognitive Skills ?


Cognitive skills are the tools for learning: processing, memory, attention, logic & reasoning. There are 41 cognitive skills of which the main ones are memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention focus and creativity.

If you are able to make these strong in your child’s brain, then you would have enabled your child to unlock their brain potential and seek new heights.


Many parents also ask me what are Academic Skills?

Academic skills are the subjects we learn in school: math, literature, science, history, languages, etc. Students with weak cognitive skills may have many difficulties in academic learning.


How are Cognitive Skills and Academic & Life Performance related?

Another question that is asked by parents often, and a very important one at that. If the child is weak in memory, then no matter what you do, your child will not be able to perform in the classroom. Another example which I love using is one that of an athlete. An athlete’s physical body strength can be compared to our brain, the race itself to academic and life performance and teaching/ tutoring to that of learning ways to run a 800 race.

Let us dig a little deeper.


READINGFor example, reading involves sound to symbol connections. One must be able to tell if sounds are the same or different, the order and number of sounds, hold all of those in place, and then read and spell. When one of these skills is weak, students may struggle with reading and spelling. The cognitive skills involved here include the following: segmentation, blending, auditory processing, multi-syllable management, fluency, and comprehension.

READING

Children struggling to read would begin cognitive skill training with an emphasis on strengthening auditory processing skills. The students also strengthen their skills of attention, visual processing, short-term and long-term memory, and logic and reasoning. The therapy includes cognitive training exercises (Brain Enrichment) which are challenging and fun.


CLASSROOM CONNECTION

Once the underlying cognitive skills are strengthened, the academic skills become easier. An integrated program that gives importance to brain enrichment as well as academic enrichment in math, English or other academic subjects, help children make the connection to those subjects through vocabulary development, visualization spelling, oral and written expression, attention skills, study and outlining skills, and automaticity of math facts. All of these skills are required throughout life. By improving and automating these skills, the key to learning fast and efficiently is discovered
