Total KZN Capex Requirement: R3.689 billion (over 5 years) – R2.470 billion for catchments Or approximately R725.8 million/annum
Total Opex Requirement: R531.5 million (over 5 years) – R318 million for catchments Or approximately R106.3 million per annum
Focus Areas – summaries Progress
1. Gamalakhe - Pressure management and internal leak detection and repair – 100% completed – 1055 internal leaks repaired and all PRV serviced and re-commissioned. These interventions have produced a reduction in leakage levels, water demand, operational efficiency and improved system knowledge, which resulted in system stabilisation and System Input Volumes (SIV) reduction
1. Harding - Pressure management and internal leak detection and repair – 100% completed - Saving of 669 m3/day confirmed – SIV dropped from 1,7mℓ/day to 1,1mℓ/day by July 2015. Before the severe drought consequences, system was stable and 24hr supply has been achieved at reduced SIV
1. Umzinto - Pressure management; Bulk meter installation; internal leak detection and repair; trunk mains leak detection and repair – 100% completed – All existing PRV’s services and re-commissioned; 9 new PRVs installed and commissioned – 8 kl/hr saved; 1 500 internal leaks repaired; 13 new bulk meters installed including chambers; 41 possible trunk main leaks investigated, 28 confirmed and repaired.
1. Mtwalume - Pressure management; Bulk meter installation; internal leak detection and repair; trunk mains leak detection and repair – 70% completed – 25 trunk main leaks found, 23 repaired; 6 PRVs installed and 11 being installed; 3 bulk meters under installation process; 273 internal leaks repaired.
Across the Ugu District Municipality – Main activities
1. Clustering standpipes – bulk meter installations 137 new meters have been
installed in Vulamehlo, KwaLembe, Mfume, Mtwalume, KwaNzimakwe, Izingolweni, KwaXolo, Braemer, Dumisa, Oshabeni, Mehlomnyama
2. Stand pipes repairs – 423 repaired in Umzinto and Mtwalume
3. Pressure Management – Oslo beach - 2 new PRV installations under way
4. WC / WDM Awareness Campaigns – JOAT (PSP) is providing continuous support to UGU DM waters losses reduction and awareness campaigns
5. Re-commissioning of the UGU DM Leak detection Rig and purchase of field equipment - The leak detection rig has not been used since 2013 and needed considerable effort to get it operational again
6. Installation of water restrictors – Starting date 29 February 2016 in Harding – Aweareness campaing will be completed by Friday 26 Feb. Priority areas have been identified by Operations.
