IMPLANTS FROM START TO FINISH AT AAID ANNUAL MEETING

AAID has information about potential relationship between drugs for osteoporosis

and osteonecrosis in the mouthRecent reports in the scientific literature have indicated a significant risk forthe development of osteonecrosis (disease/destruction of bone in themouth) in patients taking bisphosphonate medications for the treatment ofvarious cancers, osteoporosis, and other bone metabolic diseases. Thecomplication is seen most often when the more potent forms of the medica-tion were used intravenously or with prolonged and/or high doses given oforal medications. The concern for many patients considering dentalimplants or other elective oral surgical procedures is the degree of risk/benefit in taking oral bisphosphonates, such as Fosamax® (alendronate),Actonel® (risedronate) or Boniva® (ibandronate).

The Academy has created a Bisphosphonates related consent form andother resources for members of the Academy.

Comprehensive. Synonyms include:complete, all-inclusive, wide-ranging,ample, in-depth, advanced

Using those descriptors, AAID isclearly providing comprehensiveeducation in implant dentistry.

Take for example this year’sannual meeting scientific program. Itcertainly fits the definition of com-prehensive. The Main PodiumPrograms cover the topic of implantdentistry from identifying thepatient to performing the makeoverto meeting the patient’s expectations. The three and one half days includesa full day of “New Tools, Techniquesand Technologies,” sessions on mar-keting, hard and soft tissuemanagement and gaining pre-dictable results. These arewide-ranging, all-inclusive and verymuch cutting edge. If you want moreinformation about the 2006 AnnualMeeting or to register, visitwww.aaid.com/annualmeeting.html.

The Annual Meeting allows forattendees to address topics ingreater depth as well. The eight half-day limited attendance programscover implant dentistry from thebasic to the most complex of treat-ment options.

The recently concluded BoneGrafting Course is one example ofhow the Academy gave attendees in-depth and hands-on experience withthis vital area of implant dentistry. This course combines lectures and

laboratory sessions. The lecturesfocus on head and neck anatomy, including the tempromandibularjoint; chin, ramus and subantralgrafts; soft tissue managementaround implants and grafts; platelet-rich plasma; venipuncturetechniques; bone graft material clas-sifications and perioperativepharmacology. Clearly a completeand all-inclusive look at the subject.Participants regularly claim this isone of the best courses they haveever attended. Plan ahead to partici-pate in the June 22-23, 2007 course.

Through the AAID endorsedMaxiCourses®, the Academy offersdentists ample and widespread cov-erage of implant dentistry. Thecourses provide over 300 hours of lec-ture, laboratory sessions, livesurgical demonstrations andhome/office assignments. The U.S.based MaxiCourses® are presented in10 parts, once a month, over a 10-month period. The objectives of theMaxiCourses® are indicative of howcomprehensive this AAID offering is:• Discuss the basic sciences as they

relate to implant dentistry• Formulate a comprehensive

approach to diagnosis and treat-ment planning related to implantdentistry

• Explain the specialty areas of den-tistry and how they relate toimplant dentistry

• Assess the many implant systemsand rate their advantages anddisadvantages

• Use enhanced knowledge ofimplant dentistry to take theAmerican Academy of ImplantDentistry Associate FellowMembership Exam

• Recognize implant procedures

through observation of live surgi-cal and prosthetic demonstrationson patientsHowever, the single most telling

piece of evidence showing how compre-hensive the MaxiCourses® are is thefact that they go beyond the “how” ofimplant dentistry and educate partici-pants in determining the “why” of thetreatment and procedures. To find outmore information about a MaxiCourse®

or to enroll, visit www.aaid.com/ education_upcoming.html.

At the top of the agenda for theBoard of Trustees and staff of theAcademy is to make certain that theAAID continues to be the primarysource for comprehensive educationon implant dentistry. If you have atopic or course you would like to seethe Academy develop, let us know.

Encourage a colleague to takeadvantage of the wealth of knowledgefound in the Academy. You can findmembership information and anapplication at www.aaid.com/membership.html. If you’re lookingfor a speaker for your next meeting, please check out the Speakers Guildon our website. We have over 60 cre-dentialed members who havepresentations available on a varietyof topics!

The word comprehensive is foundat the very top of the AAID Web sitebecause the Academy has beenadvancing the standard of care forcomprehensive implant dentistrysince 1951. Comprehensive educationin implant dentistry is one of the waysthe Academy is accomplishing that.

Significant articles in the LosAngeles Times and the Cincinnati

Enquirer coupled with AAIDPresident Dr. Kim Gowey quotedextensively in a lengthy article onimplant dentistry in Inside Dentistrymark a very successful start of theAcademy’s public relations strategy.

Spearheaded by Dr. Joe Orrico,Chair of the AAID PR Committee, theAcademy has also been mentioned asa resource in the Washingtonianmagazine, the leading publication foraffluent residents of the District ofColumbia and surrounding area.

According to Dr. Gowey, “The goal ofour PR efforts is to increase the visibil-ity of AAID credentials to the public, profession and other health careproviders.” Dr. Orrico agrees, “I wouldlike the AAID to be the premier organi-zation in the eye of the consumingpublic.” The Academy has accomplisheda lot when it comes to the dental profes-sion. “We’ve come a long way with ournew logo, the AAID Web site, studyclubs, Speakers’ Guild, AAID News, theAAID eGram and the Journal of OralImplantology,” Dr. Orrico pointed out.

However, both Dr. Gowey and Dr.Orrico feel that the Academy has been

a well-kept secret when it comes to thepublic. “What the public doesn’t knowis that the AAID has as its memberssome of the most dynamic and pro-gressive people in the field ofdentistry. The reason is because wehaven’t told them,” Dr. Orrico said.“We need to expand our efforts toincrease public awareness,” he added.

The PR Committee’s efforts are tar-geting such national publications asRedbook, AARP The Magazine, Preven-tion, Ladies Home Journal, More,Town& Country, Women’s Day amongothers. In addition, the Committee willtarget TV and radio outlets includingthose in large metropolitan markets aswell as national programs.

“By the end of my term as chair ofthe PR committee, I would like to haveprograms in place that will raise thenational awareness of dental implantsand increase recognition of implantdentists,” Dr. Orrico stated. “I wouldlike to see the Academy positioned asthe leader in implant dentistry, recog-nized for its history, education processand as the authoritative credentialingbody,” he added. Dr. Gowey echoed thisview. “Because there is no recognizedspecialty in implant dentistry, the

closest thing that the dental profes-sion has is the AAID and ABOIcredential. We want the public, profes-sion and other health careprofessionals to see that these creden-tials represent a way to differentiateamong practitioners. It is more thanjust a certificate with no value.”

The AAID message will emphasizethat implants are the most effectiveway to replace missing teeth.“Implants are successful, painless, andpermanent,” Dr. Orrico stated. “Wewill also explain how to find an experi-enced implant dentist,” he added.

“I am very pleased with the workof Dr. Orrico and the PR Committee.I chose Dr. Orrico to head this effortbecause he is someone who is veryexperienced, is an excellent practi-tioner and represents our Academyvery well,” Dr. Gowey said.

The Academy just completed anintense spokesperson training sessionat which more than a dozen memberslearned techniques for being successfulwith the media and had the opportu-nity to practice before the camera.

Be on the lookout for even morepositive exposure for the AAID in thelocal, regional and national media.

RESEARCH FOUNDATION NEEDS YOUR HELP TO ADVANCE COMPREHENSIVE IMPLANT DENTISTRY

The American Academy ofImplant Dentistry has been advanc-ing the standard of care forcomprehensive implant dentistry forover 50 years. The Academy’sResearch Foundation has been anintegral part of achieving that goalsince 1981.

Good, Better, BestThe good news is that the

Foundation has raised over $580,000over the past six years ago. The betternews is that 100 percent of all moneyraised goes to the ResearchFoundation’s Endowment Fund. Noother research foundation can makethat claim. The best news is that theFoundation has funded over $150,000of research in implant dentistry andprovided $100,000 in grants to LomaLinda University Dental School toestablish an oral implantology center.

Some of the cutting edge researchfunded by the Foundation in the pastincluded 3D applications withimplant dentistry techniques, the useof computerized imaging solutions, study of implant survivals rates andfactors associated with implant fail-ure, just to name a few.

More than ResearchHowever, research is only one part

of the Foundation’s mission. TheFoundation also supports continuingeducation, educational seminars, congresses, and meetings. It alsosupports studies within establisheddental schools and hospitals. TheFoundation encourages the develop-ment and testing of new techniquesand procedures in implant dentistry. One of the Foundation’s lesserknown objectives is to also providehumanitarian assistance on aneeds basis for those unable toafford implants.

To accomplish all this, theFoundation has set a target of $1 million as an endowment fund. Itis more than halfway towards achiev-ing that goal, and the vast majorityof funds – $420,000 – have come fromapproximately 1,000 individualmembers of the AAID. However, over$350,000 was contributed by only200 Academy members.

The Foundation intends a broad-based outreach to all members of theAAID to encourage contributions tothe excellent work of theFoundation.

How YouCan Support

There are sev-eral ways to support theAAID Research Foundation. An out-right contribution by check or creditcard can be made. You can pledgeyour financial support to theFoundation over a one to five yearperiod. A pledge form can be found onpage 9.

Of course, stocks or appreciatedequities can be donated and bequestsfrom an estate can be arranged aswell. Support the Foundation at theCorporate Auction held at each annualmeeting. This can be in the form of bid-ding on the items available ordonating items for bid at the auction.

Help the Research Foundationcontinue to advance comprehensiveimplant dentistry by contributingtoday. Again, 100 percent of your con-tribution directly goes into theEndowment Fund and only theincome of the fund will be used tosupport research and awards.Contributions are tax deductible ascharitable donations. The AAIDResearch Foundation is our veryown foundation.

A & C Board Holds 2006Oral/Case Examinations: TheAdmissions and Credentials Boardmet in Chicago May 18 – 21 for itsannual business meeting and to con-sider applications for credentialedmembership. This year, the Boardconsidered 66 applications: 56 forAssociate Fellowship by examina-tion, two for Fellowship byexamination, one for reinstatementof Fellowship and seven forFellowship by credentials.

The A & C Board’s report aboutits meeting/examination and recom-mendations for election of newAssociate Fellows and Fellows wasconsidered by the Board of Trusteesat its June 2 meeting. Recommendedfor election were 49 of the AssociateFellow candidates and all of theapplicants for Fellowship. The newcredentialed members will beinducted and recognized during the2006 Annual Meeting.

Eligibility Period forA s s o c i a t e F e l l o w s h i pLengthened: The Board increasedthe eligibility period for completionof the two-part Associate Fellowexamination from three to fouryears. This new four-year eligibilityperiod is effective with those whoseeligibility ends in 2006, i.e., their eli-gibility has been extended to 2007.

This change will allow more can-didates to meet the requirement, which is effective in 2007, that allcases must have been in function forat least one year by the examinationdate.

Examination CancellationPolicy Revised: The oral/case

examinations for AssociateFellowship and Fellowship arescheduled on an appointment basisover a four-day period and candi-dates are notified of theirexamination times six to eightweeks in advance. Consequently, candidates can make their travelplans early enough to receive thebest-available fares and arerequired to spend no more thanthree hours at the examination sitein Chicago. The appointment systemworks well except in the case of can-cellations since it is difficult toreschedule candidates who havealready made their travel plans.

This year, the number of exami-nations canceled reached an all-timehigh of 25 percent of the applicants. In an effort to reverse this trend, theBoard adopted the following policyto replace the one that has been ineffect since May 1994:

A fee of $500 will be charged toreschedule an oral - case exami-nation that is canceled 45 days orless before the examination date.

The earlier policy specified a 30-day notice and a rescheduling fee of$125.

A & C Board Presentations atthe 2006 Annual Meeting: TheBoard has scheduled three timeswhen members can talk with someof this year’s successful candidatesand view their case reports in theExhibit Hall. In addition to seeinghow these new credentialed mem-bers interpreted the guidelines forcase report preparation, these infor-mal sessions provide an excellentopportunity to talk with them abouttheir examination experience. Boardmembers and staff will also be avail-able to answer questions.

Representatives of the A & CBoard will also explain the examina-tion requirements and process atthe Lunch and Learn session,Friday, October 27, noon – 1:15 p.m.

Begin the Process to become aCredentialed Member: Generalmembers are urged to take the firststep toward Associate Fellow bysigning up for the written part of thetwo-part membership examination. The written examination will begiven six more times this year, eachin a different location:August 4 Chicago, IllinoisOctober 29 Chicago, IllinoisNovember 12 Irbid, JordanDecember 1 Atlanta, GeorgiaDecember 8 New Delhi, IndiaDecember 10 Chennai, India

Applications and fees are due inthe Headquarters Office at least 30days before each examination in theUnited States and 90 days inadvance for those in Jordan and
