Whenthelockdownwasannouncedearlierthisyear,itcamealongwithmultipleuncertaintiesofhealth,livelihood,

�inances,mentalandemotionalwellbeing.Anyprospectoftomorrowbecamevague,forwehadnoexamplesfrom

recenthistoryandmemorywheresomethinglikeCOVID19hadhappened.Whiletheworldwastryingtomakesense

of the new realities, certain areas of concernwere resolved just by the ability of being human. Charity groups,

voluntaryorganisations,andconcernedindividualsquicklyofferedwhateverwasneededtoovercomethecrisis.

Muslim charity groups, help organisations, and individuals also participated generously, ensuring the poor are

attended,strandedareprovidedwithfood,water,andotheressentials.Thiswasreportedwidelybythenationaland

regionalmedia.ThisbooklettriesexplicitlytobringtoforecontributionsoftheMuslimcommunitythroughtheCOVID

19crisis.ApartfromthedescriptivedetailsofthecharityworkundertakenbytheMuslimcommunity,thisbooklet

alsotakesourattentiontotheconceptofcharityforMuslimsandhowitshouldbeunderstoodinthecurrentsocio-

politicalsituation.

Islamordainsfollowerstohelpthoseinneed.QuranandHadithareproliferatedwithexamplesofcharitythatMuslims

arerequiredtooblige.However,theconceptofcharityistobeunderstoodbeyondtherequirementsofquantitative

dataasxkgsofrationandfoodpacketsweredistributed.Itiscrucialtocomprehendcharitythroughthesociological

lensandunderstandinghowtheideaofcharitystretchesonthenotionofreciprocity,solidarity,andequality.

Firstly,thecentralvaluethatcharityestablishesisthesocialprotocolofhowMuslimsaresupposedtobringina

standardprescriptionofrelatingtootherhumanbeings,withorwithoutacrisisinsight.Secondly,theideaofcharityis

anobligationthathastobemetout,becauseallthewealthinthe�irstplacehasbeenprovidedbythecreator.So,in

principle,therelationshipdevisedbytheactofcharityisbetweenequals,whereanindividualfeelsthepainofthe

otherindividualandreadilypartsawaywithaportionofhiswealth.Someonewhoisatakerofcharitytodaycouldbea

giverinsomeyears,furtherstrengtheningtheideaofequality.

Anycharityworkisanactofkindnessbyanindividual/organizationtowardsthefellowhumanbeingandshould

ideally be above any classi�ication.However, the charity effortsmadeby theMuslim charitable institutions and

individualsneedtobecontextualisedinthecurrentsocialandpoliticalsituationofthecountry.Initially,asthevested

intereststriedtocommunalisethepandemic,asimpleeffortofofferingfoodorwaterontheroadsidewasaresponse

againstthepropagandathatwasbeingbrewedontheTVchannels.Throughthisactofcharity,theMuslimcommunity

subtlyshowedtheworldthattheyareguidedonlybyhumanityandloveforfellowcitizens.Theyareequalsonsofthe

soilandwouldstandbythenationineverysituation.

IMPARsalutesthededicationoforganisationsandindividualswhocameforwardinthesetestingtimes.

Hunger Pangs of a PandemicHaveyoueverbeenhungry?Nottheusualhunger,wefeelbetweenthemealsbutthekindthatpinchesthestomach

whenyouarestrandedandyouknowfoodisnotavailable.ManypeoplelivedthroughthishorrorduringtheCOVID19

pandemic,andmanymoreweredeterminednottoletanyonegohungry.Herewepro�ilesomeorganisationsand

individualswhotriedto�illthestomachswithfoodandheartswithhopeofthiswillpasssoon.

InLucknow,WahidBiryanifamousfortheAwadhicuisineturnedvegetarianforanoblecausetofeedthousandsof

migrantspassingthroughLucknowintheCOVID19lockdown,.

The popular eatery has been
