IMPACT REPORT
2 Published July 2019 Learn more about how we measure our impact at impact.noondaycollection.com 3
Through our work at Noonday Collection, we have been fortunate to meet talented people in countries across the globe—many of whom face seemingly insurmountable challenges each day. A powerful truth has emerged through our conversations: what people want most in the world is the ability to apply their talents in a good job. People don’t want to live off charity, people want to thrive in a dignified job so they can provide for themselves and their loved ones.
But what constitutes a dignified job? A dignified job honors the whole person—like in Ethiopia, where Artisans receive counseling services to foster healing from past traumas. It is flexible and compassionate—like in Guatemala, where workshops enable moms to work from their homes while their children play nearby. It is safe and empowering—like in India, where women at risk of gender-based violence take part in self-defense classes and are educated on their rights. And it is relational— like in Uganda, where Artisans describe their workshop colleagues as a tight-knit family.
Artisan Businesses committed to fair trade practices are providing a crucial source of dignified jobs across the globe. That’s why in this report, we are honored to highlight the impact Noonday’s Artisan Business Partners are making in their communities—and how you, Noonday’s customers, Hostesses, and Ambassadors, are making that global impact possible through your purchase decisions. Today, over 2,000 women are creating a marketplace for Artisans across all 50 states as Noonday Ambassadors.
Since 2010, we’ve gotten a beautiful glimpse at what is possible when people have access to dignified work and consumers have access to style made with love—and we know that this is only the beginning.
Thanks for joining us in building a flourishing world,

130 COMMUNITY WORKSHOPSsupported by Noonday Collection’s orders
In 2018, we set a goal
to develop even more
transparency within our
supply chain by diving
deeper into the Community
Workshops where our
pieces are made by hand.
These workshops are vital
because they create jobs
that are located in the
communities where
Artisans already live.
Instead of commuting
long distances and leaving
their families to find secure
work, Artisans can care for
their children and tend to
their homes while earning
an income. Now, in our
second-ever Impact Report,
we are excited to share
just some of the incredible
ways your purchases are
enabling these Community
Workshops to impact
even more families in their
communities.

EMPOWER A WOMAN, EMPOWER A COMMUNITY
We believe that investing
in women has the potential
to transform entire
communities. That’s why we
focus on impacting women
in vulnerable communities
across the globe where
gender inequality and limited
economic opportunities have
held them back.
Studies have shown that
women reinvest much more
of their incomes back into
their families to directly
benefit their children. Help
a woman earn a paycheck,
and she will take that
paycheck and equip the
next generation to succeed
through nutrition, medical
care, and education!

Because she had no

Today, because of her job

Sunita is a true entrepreneur—
but for years, she experienced
abuse and disempowerment
in her home. When she gave
birth to her daughter, Vandana,
she knew that she didn’t want
Vandana to face the same
challenges.
Sunita began working as an

she provides dignified work to
other women just like her as a

Sunita ensured that her

LITTLE DETAILS THAT MAKE A BIG IMPACT
We ship many of our
products in special
accessory bags handmade
in Rwanda. To make the
bags, seamstresses search
through the vast local fabric
markets of Kigali to find
vibrant wax-cotton prints
that our customers will love.
Then, they use foot-pedal
sewing machines to stitch
bag after bag.

PRESERVING TRADITION, ONE STITCH AT A TIME
In the Tenango region of
Mexico, artists have long
been adorning their textiles
with whimsical animal
motifs in vivid hues.
Traditionally, women would
spend months or even years
embroidering textiles with
elaborate designs said to be
inspired by cliff paintings
from the nearby mountains.
Our Otomi pieces feature
a simplified version of
these storied techniques,
and allow local Artisans to
preserve a vibrant piece of
their culture.

A SAFE PLACE FOR CHILDREN
In 2015, Noonday helped
Artisan Entrepreneurs
Daniel and Jalia fulfill a
lifelong dream—to open up
a daycare center where the
children of their Artisans
could be safe and loved.
One of the daycare’s first
graduates was Nambasa,
who began attending
at age one. Nambasa’s
grandmother used to care
for her, but struggled to
provide nourishing meals—
and as a result, Nambasa’s
health suffered.
Nambasa’s mother Nakato
was working as a jewelry
maker with Jalia and Daniel,
but spent her days worrying
about her daughter. When
Nambasa joined the Ajuna
daycare in 2015, everything
changed. Her health
greatly improved, and her
mother’s worries ceased.
Today Nambasa is a happy,
healthy girl—and is moving
on to primary school!

HARNESSING THE IMPACT OF NATURE
Our Artisan Partners weave
together a golden grass
known as capim dourado,
native only to the Jalapão
region of Brazil.
To ensure that their practices
are sustainable, the Artisans
replant grass seeds for every
golden blade they harvest.
It takes one year for the
grass to achieve its beautiful
golden color.
Harnessed by indigenous
communities for generations,
this special grass now
creates dignified work for
women, many of whom are
single mothers.
In 2018, Haiti experienced
political instability that
left the country reeling.
Many businesses pulled
out of Haiti due to this
unrest, making it even
more difficult for Haitians
to support themselves and
their families.
By contrast, we increased
the size of our orders
with our Haitian Artisan
Business Partner by 26%
in 2018. With support from
our customers, Hostesses,
and Ambassadors, we were
able to grow our impact
for Artisan families in Haiti
when it mattered most.

A FAMILY REUNION
The Chonay family runs
one of the four workshops
involved in producing the
Santa Lucia Bag. They
create the bag’s beautiful
striped fabric. Because of
Noonday’s orders, their
workshop has grown from
3 to 11 looms, allowing them
to scale their business and
create more dignified jobs.
This success has enabled
members of the Chonay
family to leave their less
desirable jobs in the fields
and urban areas to be
reunited with their family
members and join the
growing business.

INDIGENOUS & SUSTAINABLE
Ecuador is renowned for its
natural beauty, but for our
Artisan Partners the landscape
also represents a source of
creative inspiration.
The Artisans work with natural
tagua seeds that are gathered
from the forest floor by local
farmers. By carefully carving
and dyeing these sustainably
gathered seeds, the Artisans
craft elevated accessories
that capture the charm of the
Ecuadorian countryside.

HARNESSING AN ANCIENT TEXTILE
Did you know that felt made
from wool is considered to
be the world’s oldest known
textile? Ancient people
developed felting techniques
as a way to construct
hearty natural fabric, and
today the people of Nepal
are preserving this time-
honored craft heritage.
In 2018, we launched a
new partnership with an
Artisan Business focused on
harnessing these traditional
techniques to create
economic opportunity

Nepal. With every purchase

dignified jobs; they help

MAKING AN IMPACT FOR RURAL WOMEN
In recent seasons, our
Peruvian Artisan Partners
have encouraged Noonday
Collection to add
simpler designs into our
assortment. The reason? To
provide work for women
with simpler skills who
live in remote areas of
Ayacucho, where jobs are
limited or non-existent.
Many of these women are
elderly, and can no longer
do complex embroidery
work—but by creating
