Legacy of the New Deal

NOT the role of the government to get

involved

The role of the government to get

involved

On which end of the spectrum might you fall? Be prepared to defend your answer!

Should the federal government get involved in certain aspects of life and society? Take, for example, a New Deal program like the NYA (National

Youth Administration) which oversaw work programs and educational grants for young people (ages 16 to 25). Should the government aid the

youth?

Legacy of the New Deal

The New Deal influenced the public’s belief in the responsibility of government. It also allowed organized labor to gain more rights.

Many argued that it vastly (and overly) expanded the role of the federal government. To this day, we see the legacy of the New Deal in our Executive Branch agencies, such as HUD (Housing and Urban Development Dep’t which now holds the FHA). When we hear some politicians say we need to “trim government excess” they are sometimes talking of the legacy of the New Deal.

“I know that many people are worrying about state banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System. There is no occasion for that worry…The success of our whole national program depends, of course, on the cooperation of the public—on its intelligent support and its use of a reliable system.”

“…Remember that the essential accomplishment of the new legislation is that it makes it possible for banks more readily to convert their assets into cash than was the case before.”
