Immigration flows respond to economy in receiving nations.

Illegal immigration from Mexico to the United States has not grown since 2007.

Larger numbers than expected are returning to Mexico. Why? Poor US economy Increasing economic opportunities in Mexico More aggressive removal of illegal immigrants in the US Stronger border enforcement & associated risks Strict enforcement policies in some states Rise of anti-immigrant sentiment

Emigration from Mexico to the United States decreased 37% from 2000 to 2010.

Net migration is now basically at 0 (roughly the same amount coming in and out).

Apprehensions (both at border and within the country) at lowest level in 2010 since 1972

In EuropeIn Europe The same thing is happening in Europe. The number of illegal entries

and detections of illegal stays in EU states has declined.

Lots of immigrants leaving Spain which has been hard hit by the recession.

Immigration sunk in Ireland (high unemployment) between 2009 and 2010 to lowest level since 1989.

Ireland & Spain are seeing increasing emigration of highly educated and skilled native born.

Net migration still positive in the UK. Lots of student visas. Immigration at 2004 level.

Overall long-term emigration from UK is lowest since 2005. Immigration decreased and emigration increased in Australia even

though Australia hasn’t been much affected by the recession. Immigration to Canada is increasing.
